how to tell if odometer reading is correct?

looking at buying a '00 yukon with 63k on the ticker, it has leather, but it is worn fairly bad for only having 63k (IMO). my gmc has 60k on it and it still looks like the day i picked it up (even though it is a little newer).

the exterior is in really nice shape it does have its blems but overall really nice shape.

 

 

basically is there anyway to unhook the odometer? if so how can i tell if it has been done? i have only talked to the guy on the phone and he didnt seem to be in it to make any money just sounded like he got something new and didnt want this around any more...

You can buy new instrument panels with the odo set at 0 miles, or buy one off of e-bay with any random amount of mileage on it. They can also be programmed, but this is fairly well regulated.

 

Look at the hourmeter, maybe hes been commuting in heavy traffic in the thing.. or maybe he just has a fat ass?

 

I have like 1260 hours on my truck with 47k miles.

 

A lot of the GM stuff on e-bay has beat up looking seat leather.

 

Oh, or you could just disconnect the instrument panel and drive without gauges and not count up mileage =).

 

Not sure if there is a secondary way to get mileage from it (e.g. tech 2).

im not saying its a new vehicle was just curious. they only experience i have with leather is with my 1990 jeep cherokee with 230k miles on it and the leather is absolutely flawless, i usually have the doors off so they get covered in dust and rain. and i am always laying tools on them.

 

after looking around a little on ebay and auto trader i agree the leather must not have been top quality for gm.

Sorry man, wasn't trying to be a smart ass. but your right, GM does not use the greatest quality leather. That and the age of the vehicle don't help either. I think it has improved though. A co-worker has an 04 tahoe with leather and it still looks new.

Landon, if you state has state inspections, the last time the truck was inspected the mileage was recorded and reported to the state. You can call that dept, give them the vin # and they can tell you what the mileage was the last time it was inspected. Many people miss this when "playing" with the miles.

Doesn't carfax report that information as well?

The leather is not the best, but its OK. Biggest problem is they stretch it paper thin trying to make it go as far as possible, coupled with people sliding in and out thousands of times without ever conditioning the leather, and it dries out and cracks. I've seen them well under 75K miles with severely cracked seats before.

On a side note, Carfax is indeed useful, but its not error-proof either. It only records work done at franchised dealers and big-name repair facilities, not any of the shadetrees, so its not always 100% accurate.

It reports the mileage reading everytime the title is transfered and in states where there is emission testing it reports every time it's tested.

In my state of WA the carfax is great because every year or two the mileage is recorded at the emission station. It's another tool to help from getting screwed. Most good dealers will print it out for you if there is nothing to hide, I found it easier to copy all the vin numbers down and do my own research.

A friend of mine had the one-month free CarFax reports and I looked up my '89 on it. When I bought the truck, I was told by the owner that the speedometer and odometer were broke for roughly 2 years. On the title, I noted that the mileage was incorrect, but the CarFax report made no mention of this and neither did the title the SOS send me.

If you know someone with a scanner it should be able to tell your true hours and miles even if the cluster was replaced.

 

Dealers will not do it. Find someone at a shop who can do it.

 

 

 

Interesting...I can't say anything regarding the hours, but everything I've read here and elsewhere says that on the NBS (i.e., '00-'06) trucks/SUVs the only place where the odometer reading is stored is in the cluster. Maybe--and that's a big "maybe"--the BCM, but nowhere else; it's definitely not stored in the PCM 'cuz I've had my PCM swapped a few times for custom tunes and never has the odometer reading changed on me between PCM swaps.

 

Since you're clearly insinuating that it's possible to read the true hours and miles even if the cluster has been replaced...then you obviously must know where else such info is indeed being stored at...so please tell those of us who've been led to believe all this time that the odometer is stored only in the cluster, exactly where else the odometer reading is being stored. :cheers:

I can push in the trip meter plunger for a few seconds with the key out, and it will show the hours on the engine on my 00 silverado. I'm not sure where that ifo is actually stored however.

    • I'm also waiting to see if they confirm Apple CarPlay, because I'm not interested in subscription fees just to use the hardware I already purchased.    In closeups it looks like it gets the Colorado/Canyon center screen based headlight controls which I despise. They also appear to lose all the hard switches for functions like seat heating and cooling, parking sensors, lane control, traction control, etc. which means they're all screen/menu based, so verdict is out on how well those will work with gloves or wet/dirty hands.  Admittedly they don't show the left knee area of the dash, but I don't see hard switches for locker control on the ZR2, and the "mode" switch appears to eliminate the rotary dial with a quick way to access tow/haul.  My 2021 has had multiple screen failures and at times the screen just locks up, goes black, or reboots while driving even after replacement, so loosing the ability to access many of these functions, especially lighting control would be pretty frustrating.   There aren't enough photos or detailed trim details other than one mention of "available microfiber trim" to confirm, but the use of microfiber on the seats and or center console is a deal killer for me.  Just because you drive a ZR2 or High Country, doesn't mean you don't work out of it, and that material is difficult at best to keep clean and looking decent.   Lexus and several other brands are using it on seats, dash, and door panels now, I assume as a cost and weight saving measure,  and it looks horrible 1-2 years into ownership.  I see what appears to be piano black on the doors and center console in some photos, which also has no place in ANY vehicle in my opinion because it mars and scratches too easily, especially for a truck.  Will be interesting to see what GMC comes out with when the Sierra is released as far as materials go.      
    • Im a fan.  Simply moving the screen up helps the look of the interior.  I feel like GM dropped the ball on the current gen having the screen not at the same level as the top of the gauge cluster.  The GMCs look better with the vents above the screen to close that gap.  
    • I hear you, its just not something one would even think of that the new oil in the container isn't filtered to a spec one would expect it to be.    As to a passenger vehicle theme and the maintenance requirement to meet to ensure a warranty is honored, these days with claims of life time transmission fluid on some models and the limited amount of oil changes that would bring one to the end of the factory warranty, that sells vehicles for those that like to hear "easy care maintenance free", but the manufacturer certainly knows different as to what that more than likely means for the longevity of some of the components if given that minimum spec maintenance. Then again I imagine there are a fair number of people that really don't care as long the vehicle gets them a certain number of years down the road because they are the type that want the next new thing, new and improved ... more bells and crap etc on the new one on the show room floor. Manufacturers have learned the phycological game to entice the customer out of their money !
    • Why soooooo many screens? Shall we just replace the windshield with a large plasma?!?!? Besides that I like the looks. And they added back the additional door cubbies,    No SS???
