Cheap Upgrades.

Well I got my truck last saturday and I love it except its too quiet and I want some bigger tires cause the old 265's are shot. Anyway I was wondering if it would be too loud if i just cut the muffler off? And if a set of 285/75-16's would fit without cranking the t-bars for a while.

Nice truck for a 16 year old, glad to see your parents were smart and got you in a 4.8L instead of the 5.3. A cat back exhaust adds great sound and small amounts of power, but I see good MPG improvements because of reduced flow restriction. Not sure if the tires will fit right, I think I may have 285s I cant remember though, but mine do rub a tad at full turn, but I know its one of the biggest stock tires that can be put on with no mods.

welcome!! and congrats on the truck!! :banghead:

some cheap mods you could go with:

smoked light covers

window tints

light covers

nerf bars

bolt on ss exhaust tip

grill inserts

cb

new bulbs for your headlights

and if you want a free mod that makes your truck look truly BA... just drive it in some mud... :banghead:

Nice man! Good truck to start out with at a young age. I got mine when I was 16, but I couldn't drive it yet then. But now I can.

Exterior cheap things:

-Window Tint

-Billet Grille

-Debadge

-Color Match (some things, probably like the mirrors and door handles)

Looking at mufflers, I'd go with IMCO or Magnaflow. Magnaflow makes some cheap universal ones. Personally, I have an IMCO, and it sounds good with my V6. IMCO's should last long too.

Otherwise, save your money for a lift kit and some All Terrain tires. Oh, and wheels too.

Congrats on the nice truck.

If you are tight on cash, your best mods are absolutely nothing until you live with this truck for a while. Take you time to see the best changes for the limited $ you have. A good example is when I was 16, put a glass-pack on my older brother's newly purchased ride ('71 Monte Carlo). Within a few weeks the interior noise/drone was driving him insane so he eventually spent the money again to switch it back. Just make sure you are not throwing good money away.

I would avoid the bigger tires with the 4.8 under the hood. Depending on what rearend you have, your mileage and off the line power will plummet. If you don't care about that, then have at it. One of the BEST mods you can make is a tune. It seems expensive, but the bang for the buck is unbeatable. Plus he can program it for the bigger tires if you get them. If your looking for ext. mods, look around at other trucks for a while and see what catches your eye. The guys are right though....drive it for a while and see how she feels and then decide on the mods.

Good luck and Welcome!

Nice to see another couple teenagers here! I'm 17 as well. I've got the 5.3l....I do have to stand up for the "Glad your parents got you the 4.8 instead of the 5.3" statement. There are a few responsible teenagers out there! Not many...at all....but there are a few!

16yrs old... so i'm going to assume you want loud azz exhaust & aren't worried about interior noise/drone? if i'm correct, here are a few things you can do:

cheap exhaust mod #1

use hacksaw & cut off exhaust pipe just after muffler & anchors.. mod is free & will give you a lil extra sound. not loud enough?

cheap exhaust mod #2

cut out 2-3" hole on back side of muffler evenly spaced from existing outlet. basically you're making your muffler a "single in / dual out." this will increase volume but sound will not be as smooth as aftermarket mufflers!

cheap exhaust mod #3

remove muffler* & replace it with a straight pipe! will be loud as hell, but quality might suffer.

(*this is illegal, so before you do it, make sure you won't be subject to any future inspections, etc..)

as far as tires or anything else, remember: you get what you pay for!

PS- oh yeah, congrats on the truck. wear your seatbelt & try not to total that thing!

i always hated the sound of glass packs, so i couldn't tell you..

I live out in the country in Iowa

in that case, you should be able to find people around you w/ packs & mufflers.. next time you're next to one, roll down the window & ask
