Air Intake

i see alot of guys on here have intakes. i noticed that people say chevy intakes are one of the best and some of you say that you cant even improve them. well i have considered getting a "cooler air intake" (so that i dont make you mad because obviously it isnt cold air except for winter) to gain power on the highway and WOT. i noticed that on the forum a member said hes never seen anything but a loss in low end performance. im wondering how this is even possible your getting air either way extra air or less restricted air could not possibly make you lose low end power. i have considered keeping the factory air box and changing the tubing (it looks like there is some sort of resonator on the intake) someone told me that by doing a ram air or some sort of intake my exhaust note will be changed to a more raspy sound...... i thought the intake sound would just be different not the exhaust. the reason why i was thinking about just redoing the pipe to a straight pipe is that i could always change it back to the way it was and PVC pipe is cheap.....also any ideas on the material if i make one. i have heard volant and outlaw are the best if i were to buy one.

Personally, I liked the look and performance of the GMPP intake, so I went with that. I also noticed improved throttle response and an increase in HP across the entire RPM band. Not to mention they just sound mean.

 

While the stock airbox can be improved upon, the tubing is really the restrictive part. A replacement tube, such as the one offered by Airraid (about $110), is one way to go. Another optional mod, if you want to get some more air into the intake, is to cut some holes in the bottom of the airbox. Just as long as you don't plan on driving through any deep water anytime soon. Personally, I didn't want to do this, but my friend did, and he loves it. Here are some pics of his airbox on his GMT-800 Silverado. Sorry for the crappy pics, I was too lazy to go get my 7mp camera so I took them with my Moto Q.

Here is the hole where the factory intake used to be. It's already like that from the factory, just waiting for you to open up your airbox.

I just went with the Airaid MIT and the stock K&N filter. I haven't got around to modifying the airbox or coming up with a ramair tube yet. Good idea with cutting the holes in the airbox.

if i was you kyle, i'd save your $$$ and just stick with stock.

I put on a 63 series K&N intake yesterday and I noticed a definite improvement in power and sound. I find myself pushing the gas down more just to hear that rumble.

That's what the filter is for. As long as you don't sink the truck in water you'll be fine.

how do u pull the airbox off? i know how to get the top off to change the filter but what about the bottom?

Just give it a strong upward pull. The bottom of the airbox is snapped into rubber grommets so there's nothing that needs to be unbolted/unscrewed.

 

P.S. I'm real happy with my stock airbox box for my 8.1. However I cut about a 15 sq in section out of the front of the airbox right in back of the headlight. I figured it might be aerodynamically better then a bottom hole. (probably a nit though)

Undo the Intake tube and pull real hard up and out .

I did my air box with a hole through the bottom but I used a flange from a RV parts store so it has a nice 4" hole in bottom that a person could run a tube from the front bumper shroud to , ram air similar to Volant .

I will put pictures up .

I have a Vararam now but the mod worked real good until I got the Vararam , never got around to the tube .

Here you go , I think it might be a 3" hole instead of 4" , I used black plastic anchors I got from AutoZone to hold the Flange in .

I was thinking of getting the MIT. What do you think of it, Any better performance, Better mileage, worse, more noise?
