How Many Problems Have You Had With Your GMT-900?

Are they just using air impact wrench on them? If using an air impact wrench, are they at least using torque limiting extensions? Uneven torqueing of lug nuts is the number one cause of warped rotors, other than substandard quality rotors, which would nto surprise me either, given the grooves I have on one of my trucks rotors at 7k miles.

Please explain this statement to me. Not quite sure i understand it.

The best way to tighten the lugnuts is with a calibrated torque wrench, in several increments, using a recommended star pattern.

Hand toquing is time consuming, so many tire shops simply use an air impact gun, and they often torque the lugnuts unevenly, causing uneven pressure on the rotors, which can lead to rotor warping. By using a torque extension with an air gun, they minimize the possibility of overtorquing or uneven torquing. Torque extensions are calibrated for a specific torque and once that torque is reached, the extension will flex in synchrony with the beats of the air gun, preventing excessive tightening. This is a lot better method than using an air impact gun alone, but a hand torque wrench is always better.

As for inferior rotors - one rotor on my truck is already grooved at 7k miles. I have a Mazda with 185k miles with four original brake rotors and no grooves in them.

Ic. Well I guess different tire shops do it different ways. All the tire shops i go to have the regulator set below the standard torque so they snug em up with an impact and then use a torque wrench to finish the job.

Well, I guess I'll throw my info in too:

Almost 31,000 miles on it now, bought in early March '07....

- Rough transition between V8-V4 mode - Fixed with ECM/TCM flash

- Brakes pulsing after shop rotated tires and unevenly or overtightened the lugs (not GM's fault) - Turned all 4 rotors, fixed

- While turning the rotors, dealer noticed one of the rear wheel speed sensors was bad - Fixed

- Transmission fluid leak - Replaced pump seal, fixed

- Has the little surge/transmission shift thing about 15-20 seconds after coming to a stop sometimes - Maybe need another ECM/TCM fix?

Overall I'm extremely happy with this truck. Quiet, no squeaks, rattles, or wind noise. Great power from the L76 and great brakes to slow things down. Averaging almost 17 mpg combined, thats 3-4 mpg better than I get with my 1500HD. I had a period over the summer where I was driving about 300 miles a day and never really got tired of driving the thing. Great styling outside and in (except for the hokey fake wood). Between my Silverado and the Acadia, I couldn't be happier with GM right now.

31K since March??? Holy crap dude, do you ever stop driving? I got mine on March 10th of 07 and I am just about to 9000 miles...LOL. Hell, my wife's 2004 Impala we got in Nov of 2004 and it has only about 38K miles on it.

Why is the list of complaints bogus? Seems to me that the servicing dealer is not the most competent one.

Just like I said... the list sounds bogus. I'm not saying all of the issues are imagined. I know none of these trucks are perfect. No vehicle is. Some people have ridiculous expectations and hunt forever for something wrong with their vehicles. All I'm saying is this guy sounds like one of them. If you don't get that impression... so be it. I do.

I certainly agree with you that somebody isn't doing a good job of making him happy.

LOL, I remember us getting our trucks around the same time. Yeah I get a lot of driving in during our construction season. Plus I've taken it up to Canada for my annual fishing trip up there as well. Easily the best truck I've ever driven.

So, I'm getting many problems with my truck lately and thought we should all come together and talk about some things that have been going wrong with our nbs trucks..

Heres a list of my problems:

- Transmission (Jerks from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 1st delay after coming to stop)

Mine does this when at a full stop / waiting to turn red

As of yesterday, i noticed when i roll my driver window up all the way and it reaches the top it sounds like it still wants to go higher and then behind the door panel near the switch mech. it sounds like a spring popping. so i let off the up switch and then pull up again and it hesitates and then makes the popping sound again. I am taking it in next friday to the dealer.

2007 NBS Crew Cab.

Love it but it has had a few problem. I've had my rear leaf springs replaced! Anybody had that one yet. It cluncked so bad and people would come and ask me questions if i pulled into a parking lot because of all the racket it made. That problem started around 3000 miles and has been in and out of the shop for the problem till last week when thy finally had a different technician work on it. It is now quiet but it took 6000 miles to fix it. Oh well, I still love it.

I have a small distortion in my windshield but since I am in Arizona I figure it will be a matter of time I will need to fix it with a new windshield due to a rock hitting the current one. I just live with it.

My brakes suck! They squeek and sometimes it feels as though my fronts are working and not my rears. I had them checked and they cleaned and adjusted them but they still squeek and suck at stopping my truck. I think an upgrade to rear discs and maybe a big brake kit is in order. I will look into that when i replace the stock tires and wheels with some custom 22's.

I have a few rattles but the furniture felt trick has worked wonders at fixing 90% of them. I have a couple that will require a little more time and energy to get perfect but for now I am happy.

I get rear ended everytime I stop. Not really but it feels that way. I understand there is a bulletin for this so i will take it to the dealer to have fixed. Other than these problems I am very happy with my truck. I traded in an 06 Ram quad cab and aside from some quality issues I really like this Chevy, but I still think GM is 10 years behind in perception of quality compared to all of the other makes including Kia/Hyundai. The plastics in the interiors have huge gaps and the look and feel is low quality. They fall short in other area too, but they are gaining on Nissan which has the second lowest perception of quality.

I've had my NBS Sierra SLT since August 2007. I love the truck and think GM did one heck of a fine job designing and building it. I have about 6,500 miles on it. It is a joy to drive - comfortable, quiet, smooth riding (even with Z71), powerful enough with the 5.3 litre, and I get about 16.8 miles overall on it.

The problems I've had with it are relatively few:

The steering wheel had a piece of debris that was covered by the leather creating an annoying bulge. The dealer replaced the steering wheel.

The windshield had numerous distortions (there was a TSB issued about windshield distortions). The dealer replaced the windshield.

The transfer case leaked. The dealer replaced the seal.

The dealer, Penske GMC in Reading, PA has been great and they are a very courteous, helpful bunch of people.

I'm kind of surprised so many DO have complaints and issues. the NBS was supposed to revitalize GM and set them on a path to shed most of the quality issues that have plagued them for years. Seems they still have some work to do.

There isn't a brand of Truck out there that does not have Quality issues in this day and age.. Go pay a visit to some of the other boards and you'll know what I am talking about.

Regarding the problem with the headlights dimming briefly but well noticable when braking (does not happen all the time) or whatever.. mine has that issue as well

    • HD at the moment, are kinda their own deal.  How LTZ sells on those vs on 1500, there is a difference.   They are merging most of the mid trims on 1500.  LT, RST and LTZ are replaced by one trim, Silverado.  LT and RST are a BIG portion of sales.    Bad naming choice aside, the new Silverado trim will offer the spread of options that those three trims offered.  So expect to see things like the tech package for example, and memory seats.  And LT Trail Boss will now just be "Trail Boss" (formerly LT Trail Boss) but will offer content spread like the new Silverado trim will.  The press photos showed the Trail Boss (formerly LT Trail Boss) has access to Super Cruise now, which on the current truck was High Country only.       Here is the Trail Boss interior.  Memory seats and Super Cruise are present.  All things the LT Trail Boss it replaces, and the RST it was based on didn't get on the current gen.  You had to go to LTZ or ZR2 for memory seats, and High Country for Super Cruise.
    • I installed a Hellwig rear sway bar on my 21 Sierra SLT, it made a huge difference on how the truck handles, no body roll, the trucks much more planted now. Not sure of the suspension differences between the 21 and 26,  if its body roll your having a sway bar will solve it.
    • So a follow up and my fix. I found in online searches the live data to look at on a scan tool to verify the fuel tank pressure sensor was working.  It showed an spec number towards the lower end of the rang, but in spec.  Then while it was running opened the gas cap and the pressure should change.  It didn't change even a tiny bit.  The data for the purge valve said it was open...never changed. So then I measured the voltages on the plug for the fuel pressure sensor and they matched what it should be.  So local car quest parts had the sensor in stock...it was a bit of a pain to remove and an even bigger one to get it to actually go back in.  It helped to unbolt the driveshaft and bungie cord away from the gas tank to give a bit more room to work. So fuel tank pressure sensor in I cleared the code, and started it up.  I went to the scan tool's live data and... Eureka! The pressure number was different and fluctuated a bit.  So took it on a short drive and pressure number varied saw the purge valve go from closed to open and back to closed.  Drove it to and from work for roughly a week plugged in the scan tool no codes.  I took it in to get tested and passed.  In my state's infinite wisdom (oops meant greed), since I pushed the test with the maximum extensions I have to take it back in by Feb '27 to 'get it back up to date', then my next test won't be until Feb '29.
    • Any grease on the stud threads of any kind?   Wheel studs should have NOTHING on them for proper torquing and so the nuts don't back off.     Are all of the mating surfaces clean?  So wheel, rotor and hub?     We've had plenty of trucks at work with that wheel, this is a first to me.  Makes me think they've got a lube tech putting anti-seize on all the wheel studs or some kind of grease, and they need to stop doing that.  To have 11 other trucks with the same exact problem.
    • I was a Chevy guy for years, then switched to GMC because I liked the looks better.  I'm actually thinking I like the Chevy looks better than GMC for the first time in a lot of years.   One thing I know for certain, the new GMC dash is hideous!  Chevy wins this one!
