Stuck In 4low

My truck has always had problems going from 2 to 4 and high to low. Normally it goes into 4 wheel hi no problem but after about 1 min of driving the service 4wd light comes on and i have to shut it off and restart the truck and then i can shift the transfer case fine. I put it in 4low for just a second, never went off road and i cant get it out no matter what i try, the 4wd switches dont even light up. I had to drive home about 10 miles in low range going almost 30.

I crawled under the truck to find i think a blue wire not hooked to anything and a 2 wire connector haning there that dont seem to go to anything. My truck is a 99 silvy 2500hd 6.0, the pan on the tranny has writing from like a junk yard and i'm sure has been replaced, how can i tell if its a 4l80E? I wanna be sure that they didn't put a 4l60e in it.

Please help, i dont know what to do. I've always been a toyota guy, i never worked on a chevy, all this electrical stuff is new to me. A wiring diagram to the tranny/tcase may be helpful if some one can scan one or something.

To get out of 4lo you could pull off the encoder to expose the shift stem and get a wrench on it to shift it manually. Easy to take off; pull off the front driveshaft and then just 3 bolts and 2 wire plugs. That's how it was on my '00 1500. As for fixing it properly it could be a few things and I'm not the right guy to help diagnose. With mine it was the buttons the first time and the encoder the second time. Those things seem to always be causing problems. Sometimes I wish I still had my '79 Ford.

Mine can be difficult at times. It's the push buttons in the dash instead.

Well i went out the next day to pull it in the garage and take a look at it but when i started it i noticed all the 4x4 lights came on and it shifted right into 2wd. So i'm thinking it is just the buttons acting up.\

Thanks for the replies.

Also on a side note i got my first ever ticket today.... Coming home from xmas there wasn't really any traffic and i just didn't really care about anything at the time... Went through a speed trap thing at 97mph.... $427 ticket.... I'm really glad i dont have a tunner yet cause i know that i would've raised the govener and at 99+ mph its a $1200 min. ticket. Hopefully i will learn from this and it wont get reporded to insurance

Find a "TICKET FIXIT" lawyer.

They can cut a deal with traffic court and keep it off of your driving record.

Matt,

Glad your transfer case is working. You should track down the loose wire and connector. There are plugs on upper areas of the transfer case as well as the front diff. and the trans has some plugs as well. There's also a fuse in the panel on the side of the dash when you open the drivers door.

Get your kicks in the dirt where there's no cops for tickets and nobody else to hurt. A 4x4 ain't too good to be doing a hundred MPH in on the street. Hate to hear about a big accident.
