My Day Today In Iraq

So today 3 people were asked by an Iraqi General to come out and visit an Iraqi company with him. Not an Iraqi Army company but just a regular company you would see on the side of the road. I was asked by an E7 from out Birgade headquarters and I was able to take one of my soldiers with me. We left around 1230 local time so that is way early anywhere in the states. We went there and we were greated by a woman. That was very suprising to me because most woman are still looked down on over here. The company takes all of the US military's scrap metal and equipment that we can no longer use. They either fix it up or melt it down to reuse to help rebuild their country. They hire mostly 14 to 25 year old males and one of the highest paying companies in this area. The woman spoke perfict english and I was able to ask her some things that have been on my mind. To make a long conversation short I feel really good about being over here and helping the people of Iraq. Then we drank some chi tea that I sware I have diebetes after drinking it because it was so sweet, but really good. After that I thought we were getting kid napped by the General because we were heading away from our camp. We ended up at a resturant that his family ownes. I was a little nervious because we have had so many classes telling us not to eat anything off post but i have before and I am still around so we sat down for lunch. It was really nice to be able to see how they interact with each other and be able to see some more of their colture. It was a geat day! Thanks for listening!

I really dont know why this shocks me but they are so determined and work so hard. They are also take nothing for granted. I really wish some shops back home had the dedicated hard workers that this company had.

Yeah but thats the stuff you WONT hear on the news, the good things, all the media wants to report is bad and thats why I blame most of the stuff on the media. Heck when someone commits a crime the media tells you how they did it and that opens it up to a copy cat crime or someone that just wants to make it on the news. I think this country would be alot better if we didnt have the media.

I have a buddy that is getting ready to do another 6 month tour over there and he told me there is alot of good over there that doesnt make the news.

Good to hear! Say hello to my dad! He will be the one racing r/c boats and fishing at one of the palaces, haha. We just sent him some "supplies" and those items were in the mix. Stay safe and thanks for serving man!
