Engine Oil Temp/cooler

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone has installed an engine oil temperature sender and what the temp should be, what the max temperature should be. I'm guessing 200 is probably a max for the oil, I could be wrong, so please correct me.

Also, has anyone installed an engine oil cooler? If so, I'd like to see how you guys did it. Parts lists would be cool.

P.S. I did a search but everything for oil coolers and temp came back with transmission.

Ok, looks like these trucks possibly have temp senders already installed for the engine oil. It's a little disconcerning to me that the trans temp runs so close to the max it should while driving on the highway with the factory aux cooler, so I can't imagine what the oil does with no cooler.

Curious on this one as well, anyone?

my '95 Burb has a factory cooler.the lines run from the block(just ahead of the filter)to the radiator.I'm not sure if the oil gets cooled or the coolant gets heated...

1 guy on another forum (forget which one) said that one way would be to get the factory radiatory and the lines. That's a bit pricey.

If/when I do this, I think I'm going with a Hayden 676 cooler and a thermostat. That will insure the oil gets up to temp and doesn't go crazy. If the temps run too high I'll go larger than the 676. I'm still debating if I would go with an adapter from the factory cooler lines to that cooler or get an adapter that replaces the filter and then I could put a filter wherever I want. I wouldn't get a sandwhich adapter as it would make the filter too low for my tastes. I'm leaning towards the filter relocation.

I've been thinking of eliminating the radiator cooler all together and adding an aux. just for the engine oil... I've added an aux. for the tranny but left the lines connected to the rad. also.Maybe next time I change the oil I'll take it's temp. :D

found this on the web...Perma-Cool,might be usefull

My 97 Sierra Z-71 came with both tranny and engine oil cooler so I was disappointed to find out my new 09 Sierra SLT only came with a tranny cooler, at least that's what the lady said on the phone when I was trying to get my options list converted from french to english? (Still don't know for sure if I do?)

When I did it's first oil change last wknd I noticed the factory attachment/adaptor is already in place just above the oil filter, the only problem is I would have to purchase a new rad to have a factory set up so I think I will opt for an auxillary, I will just have to puchase the proper lines/fittings etc to do this.

Anyone hazard a guess why an SLT with the 5.3, 3:73 gears and a trailering package (not the heavy duty one) would not come with an engine oil cooler?

My only guess is that the engine oil doesn't get as hot as they originally thought, especially with the newer engines running aluminum heads?

I agree with the statement above. GM probably deleted the oil cooler as a means of keeping the MSRP at a certain point that makes the vehicle look competitively priced. They've been doing this for quite a number of years now.

Another method of keeping the oil cool is to simply have more of it. The larger volume means that it spends less time recirculating through the engine and can cool down in the pan. Is the oil capacity of the GMT-900 greater than 6 qts?

Hi conventional oil should NOT see oil temps above 210-220 degrees. That is about the limit. Synthetic oil is a different animal. Mobil 1 Synthetic has higher limit of 300 degress according to advertisements before it breaks down. the water temperature and oil temp should be about the same. If you don't have a transmission cooler I would start there before going to the oil. The newer GM trucks from about 2000 up come from the factory with synthetic oil so shouldn't be to much of an issue. An oil cooler however would be a benefit. Just my .02 cents.

No, the GMT-900s have 6 quarts of oil.

Alright, finally some real numbers, thank you. Even if synthetic can withstand 300 degrees, I wouldn't want to see it there. It's good to know that the oil and water should be about the same temperature.

My truck does have an auxiliary transmission cooler, but that will be upgraded as soon as I free up some cash. Then tires, shocks, an engine oil cooler, and an AeroForce Interceptor so I can see the engine oil temp along with other nice numbers. Maybe I'll hold off on the oil cooler until after I get the Interceptor and monitor the oil temps through the summer, and if they spike too high, I'll get rolling on that.
