Heavy Duty Truck Owners Engine Poll

I'm just curious how many of the heavy duty truck owners on here own the gas models as opposed to how many have the diesel models. Also why did you pick one over the other?

I tow a bunch. nearly 8000pound RV, eclosed racecar trailer, wave runner, open trailer with various cars and trucks on board, flat tow a racecar, and some other stuff.

all of this has been done by a y2k 1/2 ton burb with 4:10s. It is now retired and I am getting my new Tow Vehicle tomorrow.

3/4 ton Crew cab, standard bed 2wd, Duramax/Allison...I can hardly wait to hook up the RV and do a 500 mile trip this weekend to a club race I am officiating at...

With the awesome deal I got last June on the 2007 with only 9000kms (5400miles) on it, couldn't resist.

I camp as many weekends as possible, and each summer I head down to Newfoundland for a 2-3 week road trip, so having the extra power for towing is welcomed.

I went with the duramax for the towing since I do vol work for the Untied States Equine Rescue League, the better overall mileage of the diesel vs the gas truck and the limited maintenance of the diesel till it breaks except the required fluid and filters.

I need the truck to last a long time due my college bound twin daughters, need the truck to last a long time.

If I just needed a daily runner, I would be just as happy with a 1500, but the Diesel does everything better. It even pulls a small snowmobile trailer loaded, much better.

The money up front is well spent... I only have 20K miles on my '05 but when I needed the power it never let me down. Some of the things I have pulled I could have been ok with a 6.0L but this last weekend I needed the Dmax and it never broke a sweat!

 

I pulled a bumper pull 36' travel trailer from a spot it had been in for 15 years with 1 flat tire sunken in the mud up a steep grade and backed it into another lot. The truck never winced! It was'nt easy but all worked out ok. The guy with the 1500 Avalanche that was goiong to do it backed out for good reason. Tranny hit 160* but that was all. Love that Ally!

 

You don't know the power these trucks have until you really work them! Plus they are a great everyday driver!

Got an 8.1L BBC. Love the truck. Powerful, but thirsty. Simple maintenance. Works well for my limited towing.

I get only 11-13 though vs a diesels 17+.... of course with the flip flop in diesel prices last year it worked out to about the same price for the mileage. Now though, its not even close.

Dmax is amazing for sure for a power adder vehicle, but a bbc would be pretty amazing too with a turbo ( flame suit on)

I got the 8.1L simply because i needed the power but couldnt get a DMAX in my price range. I would def go diesal if you want the fuel economy and power
