Front End Pop When Turning

Recommended Posts

Posted

07 Classic 2WD just turned 40K

when I take off from a stop and slowly turn to the left, like make a turn in an intersection, I started hearing a pop.

it happens when I turn right also, but not as often.

I am due an oil change and lube so I figured that the ball joints were getting dry.

I greased both sides top and bottom and it still does it.

it seems when the suspension loads slightly in these turns I hear the noise.

I can't figure this one out and I am hoping someone else has had this and found the problem

I did a forum search for front end pop and found nothing of relevance

thanks in advance..

Make sure the bolts on your upper and lower control arms are tight enough (control arm to frame). I think they are supposed to be at 130-150 or so. Mine were loose and that was the symptom I got.

also check the top shock mounts. I know 04 had issues with that. Lift the hood and rock the truck to see if you can better locate the noise.

There is a bulletin out about some body isolator, or cross member... Whatever, the bulletin was not suspension related.

***EDIT*** My truck does this too.

My old 2002 Sierra starting doing this just before the front wheel bearing went out. I would probably check there first based on my experience.

+1 I had a popping sound when making turns. It was after installing my lift, but tightening the upper and lower control arms bolts made it stop. Might just be something loose.

My 2002 Sierra did that when repair tech at the dealership test drove the truck a few years ago. I had never noticed it before. He said he repaired it since it was under warranty still, but he mentioned something about the power steering. I have yet to hear it pop.

Crossmember washer and tie rods were the diagnosis that my dealership found. I had the same problem with my 06 a while back.
