Tonneau Cover Care/protection?

Recommended Posts

Just finished detailing the truck some and applied "Tonneau Tonic" to it afterwards, it says it beautifies, cleans and protects?

It did turn out good and is shiny etc but I am not sure how long it is going to last or even do as it say's?

I paid almost $12 bucks for a small 8 oz (236ml) bottle which imo is quite pricey!!

I will never use Armorall or anything Armorall related but I am thinking there has to be something else out there that works just as good or better for a lot less money, or are there any home brews available?

any type of marine vinyl protectant ... I can t remember the names but thereare more than one brand. Its made to stand up to heat and sun and water. I remember getting it at walmart. Can t get any better than that for our covers.

i use meguiars vinyl / rubber protectant / cleaner.. It comes in a spray bottle. Works great on tonneau , dash , and i found it to work great on plastic too like under the hood.

303 Protectant. It's the best out there IMO! I use it on everything from my Jeep' softtop to my boat's upholstery. It also works very well on fiberglass and alot of other surfaces.

Thanks guy's, some good ideas I never thought of! :jester:

I use Mequire's #57 Vinyl/plastic cleaner/protectant on my boat seats and the stuff works great, so that is what I will continue to use on my tonneau! Thanks again....Irv

Not sure I can get 303 protectant up here?

I just checked this site and all they show is a 303 cleaner, no 303 protectant?

I did however see a specific Tonneau protectant called Wolfstein but it was over $21 bucks so I think I will try the Meguire's and see how it works?

I use the 303 also, its kinda expensive $24 for a squirt bottle, but it does last quite awhile. Works great on atv plastic also.

This is what I usually use, but I ran out last year and I have been using Armor All since.

TW2001 super protectant works awesome!!! I used it on an old plastic windshield on a 66 Honda Benly and it restored the windshield to like new condition!! However, I haven't seen it on the shelves lately and would definitely buy it if I could find it again!! It also works great on vinyl.

I strongly discourage using armor all or water based protectants on tonneau covers. My tonneau on my truck was absolutely shot when I bought it, and it was only a few years old too. I do know that the previous owner was pretty particular about maintaining and cleaning this truck before I got it so I'm relatively sure that something was put on that tonneau to cause that. The vinyl on it was brittle and starting to crack, and would leave black dye on cleaning rags. Water would seep right through it too and get everything in the bed wet. I asked the manufacturer what they recommended to use on it when I ordered the replacement vinyl, and they said to use 303. I've had trucks that sat outside with tonneau covers on them and I've always used 303 protectant or Tonneau Tonic, they still looked like new and beaded up water for quite a few years later.
