There isn't anywhere to put a third color LED, two was already a tight fit. If you wanted to switch around the order (maybe yellow for auto and 4H and red for 4L), i could do that on a per unit basis.

What about an LED in one of the two available positions that can light up with two different colors (double pole LED with three pins)?

Just throwing ideas out there.

Very cool, glad to see this came to fruition so quickly. I'm fine with the Auto-yellow and 4H/4L-red settings as they make sense (yellow=you're in auto so you're good to go but warning that you'll be sacrificing a little gas mileage, red=don't be driving on dry pavement). Color actually doesn't matter too much, I'm just looking for the better visual indication that I'm in some form of 4wd.

I'm waiting to see the install instructions you post up to make sure this is something I think I can do since electronics and wiring are definitely not something I'm real experienced at, and if so I'll be ordering soon. Thanks for the work in designing this.

I was originally going to do one bi-color LED but none were bright enough. The ones I'm using right now are 4000mcd surface mounts and I wasn't able to find a discrete bi-color above about 500.

I've got a ton of picture so I just need to write up the how to. I'm very detail oriented so it'll be fairly long but actual time it takes would be probably under an hour. I've pulled mine in and out so many times for prototypes and tests that it takes me about 5 mins.

I just finished looking over the installation in the How-To section. Well written steps and clear pics but definitely not for amateurs! You should maybe offer a service where we can overnite the gauge clusters to you for modification. I'm okay with wiring projects, but get a little queasy about pulling the gauge faces and needles off the cluster. Seems like every one I've ever taken apart gets smudged, finger printed, dusty, or something and never quite looks the same. I was thinking it would involve pulling the cluster and plugging in a lite to the back, that I could handle. But I'm thinking this one is over my head.

Same here,I'm a little nervous 'bout pulling the needles off

Its certainly uneasy the first time but it's actually not that bad. Would a video showing the process help? Its the same procedure that all the 800 guys have had to do to replace the stepper motors, without the soldering.

If someone wants to pay for shipping, overnight or whatnot, I'll do that part of the install for you, it doesn't take very long.

Yeah,If you don't mind I can send you mine and include a pre-paid return shipping label for you to send it back.

I'd be cool with you shipping it to me. A lot of the development went into making the LED insert as easy as possible to put it, using laser cut spacers and adhesive pads, so its not much work.

Here's a video I found on youtube (not mine) that can give you an idea of the needle removal procedure:

What about using two LEDs of red and green. You could use each individually to make the red and green, and both together to form yellow. Just a thought.

Now THERE'S an idea I like! Red and green dimmable LEDs.... 4AUTO gives full-voltage green, 4HI half-voltage green and red, 4LO full-voltage red to keep the intensity consistent. :uhoh:
