Coolant

I just bought a 1998 Tahoe from my mother. I was checking the fluid levels and changed the oil today.

I notice that there was the green anti freeze in the Tahoe. Im guessing that the green is better for these year vehicles right?

I have read some of the topics on here concearning Dex-cool vs green stuff.

With this year model truck, is this the right thing for it?

I also have a 2003 Chevy Silverado that has Dex-cool in it. I have 116k on it. Im not sure if the previous owner had it flushed or not.

What tester do you speak of that measures the .5v or whatever.

Im ignorant when it comes to this coolant thing.

Any insight would be great.

It's suppose to be Dex-Cool. My coolant is orange. I'm pretty sure green is a no-no but hopefully someone else will chime in with more expertise.

You are correct...Dex-Cool is correct coolant for your truck...

this is just a guess...but prob what happened....the person personaly tried to changed the coolant him self and put in the wrong stuff....

I am pretty sure you can't go back to the Dex-Cool now...You have to keep using the Green Stuff.

There is nothing wrong with Dex-Cool. It works quite good in a cooling system that is well maintained. If there is a leak and air gets in the cooling system, you will have problems. My guess is that the only time the people in the above link have ever looked under the hood is after the CEL comes on.

This is what I heard over the years, I still like the old stuff. Here is a link to read, http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/gm_dexcool.html

The gaskets GM used in some V6 engines were not compatable with Dex cool. The gaskets were changed in 2004 and the problems went away.

There was a class action law suit on this. It was settled and is now closed. The last date to file was Oct. 2008. NO V8 trucks were involved in this suit.

I guess I missed the boat on that one. My wife had a 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix with the 3.1, and I have replaced the intake gaskets on it for that very reason. probably around 2000 if I remember correctly. Wasn't that expensive for parts, and I would rather do it myself anyway.

It does amaze me how they can now exclude you from making any claims against GM, when we were not notified about the Class Action lawsuit. It really is a messed up world we live in.

I would do a flush on both of them if they have not been done in at least 5yrs. Our old 98 Suburban had dex-cool in it so your 08 should have as well. If you do a flush and want to go back to the orange stuff, just make sure you have all of the green out. The two do not mix well from what I have been told.

Get them both done and you will be good for along time. Also if you do flush, now would be a good time to upgrade to new hoses, especially if you plan on keeping the vehicles. Then you will be all set in the cooling department. :jester:

If the overflow bottle had brown sludge in it by all means change & flush and refill with Dex-cool. If you want to check the acid ratio use DVM and on the V scale insert the "P" in the coolant and the "N" to a clean ground preferably on the engine. The reading must be below .5v anything else is acid and needs changing immediately. High PH is what eats the heater, radiator, gaskets and block components.

I think what ticks people off the most with this issue is that it took GM 10 years to come up with a new gasket material, come on gimmie a break they could have solved the problem the first year it happened and avoided all this.

I work for Honda and they would have never let it get that far, weather it was the coolant or gasket it's bull crap on GM part, thats what separates GM from other mfg's that are still standing.Same goes with the ISS,why wasnt it fixed the first year it was used?? Im pissed because my wife forked out $1200 to have that intake gaskets replaced on her POS Malibu(gone now, thank God) and now I have to shell out a few hundred bucks to have my steering shaft replaced on my truck which is an 07,when did this problem start, with the 00 models?? :jester:
