Raising Front End During Oil Change

Recommended Posts

Is it safe to raise the just the front of a 2004 5.3 liter sierra on ramps to do an oil change? I've read that when you change the oil in a vehicle, it is supposed to be level. Any advice?

When I changed my oil I put it up on ramps. I have a 5.3 and the drain plug is towards the back of the engine so when you put it up on the ramp i would assume that it would then direct all the oil towards that drain hole. I may be wrong but thats how I drain my oil.

I raise the front end... But the rear comes up toooooo. IDK why thou....

But as long as your pulling the plug and allow it a proper amount of time to drain the oil. You will be just fine on the ramps. Just be carefull not to over shoot the ramps... I have seen that done a couple times with vehicles..... it ruins the ramps and sometimes the vehicle...

2 slipped disc and neck trouble..... I have to pick it up so I can walk under.... I can not slide under quite as easy any more... and that is at 26 I am just waiting to see just how bad the old back and neck is going to get latter on.......

Most that change their own oil put their vehicle up on ramps. Makes it easier to get under. Just watch out that the oil doesn't shoot out past your catch pan. It likes to come flying out when you pull the oil pan drain plug.

That is cheating to put the truck 5' in the air! Get your a$$ on the ground!:lol::lol:

It would be nice to do it that way, I just slide right under there and do it, Im on the small side though (5'6" - 135lbs(Dont even start with the comments)).

+1... well, if I had a lift, I would use it too...

You...small? No - I have SEEN smaller. Quick highlight:

2009 F450 Lifted 3 inches with bigger tires all around and what pops out the driver's door? A 5'1" 140 lb contractor. I had to go up to him and ask him his dimensions, then felt bad and bought the guy breakfast at IHOP (that where we were stopped).

Nice, My wife is 5'1" and all af about 100lbs. She drives the truck every day. People at her work laugh at her because she is so small, and they cant believe she backs into the parking space. Her friend drives a trailblazer and thinks its huge to park!

The engines are tilted downward at the rear anyway so it doesn't matter. I've done it both ways, whichever is more convenient at the time and have never noticed a difference or a problem.

the only concern would be getting a good oil level reading on the dipstick, but in the right amount and check the level when it's back on the ground and you will be fine.

its safe man, i put vehicles on on angle cut railroad ties(yeah i know redneck) and drain the oil, if you are really concerned you can just crawl under the truck and pop the plug and the filter, just watch out for the exaust pipes, they may be warm....
