Warranty Voided Is You Tune Your New Truck?

Just curious is getting a blackbear tune or one of the handheld programmers will void my factory warranty on my 2010 Silverado. I want to get rid of the AFM and get a little more power from my baby.......

It sure will void it...if you bring it in with the tune still in.

 

Blackbear may be able to get you a new set of modules you could just swap out...not sure on the availability of them though.

Hand held can switch back to factory tune before you go in. I have heard talks that they can tell if it was tuned even if the tune is returned to stock...But I think that's BS

It will void it period, even if you remove the tune. The ECU keeps a record of the fact that it has been reprogrammed and dealers are required to retrieve this data as part of the warranty process. So tune = no warranty period.

If you flash the system back to stock all they can see is the last tune written as being the original one. Now to do that you need a handheld. The Blackbear route works fine on the ECM but since the TCM is part of the transmissions valve body you are not swapping that anymore. You don't have to tune the tranny I suppose but since shifting is one of these trucks biggest problems I wouldn't not tune it.

 

Now you may not have to do this every time you take the truck in of course but if for whatever reason they felt like checking and found an aftermarket calibration in the ECM ( they have a bulletin how to do it) your powertrain warranty is gone. If you really feel like fighting it and you are in the USA there is the Magnusson Morrisson act, but that is meaningless to me as I am in Canada.

 

I was not impressed with the performance of the 6.2 in stock form( on 4 trucks it was very dismal at best) and didn't want to fight with this tuning and maybe get away with it crap. I am not confident in the 6 speed myself and since I see it as one of the biggest things I dislike I just left the truck on the lot. I daily drive a 6L90E and it has issues...... but of course GM says its "okay". I live by the if you can't afford to pay you can't afford to play analogy. That being said in this instance the trucks in no way made me want to pay anything for them so the decision was easy.

 

Most guys will tell you to just do it and you will be fine. Probably....... unless you have a dealer that decides to check for whatever reason, or eventually will be forced too. It's up to you.

From what I have read on BlackBear site, only the Diesels have the ability to verify if a tune was done.

The Gas engines do not leave a "track record" if you go back to OEM tune.

Gas Powered Engines Only

 

Models: 2006–2009 GM Passenger Cars and Light Duty Trucks

2006–2009 HUMMER H2, H3

Excluding Pontiac Vibe, G8, Chevrolet Aveo, All Saturn and Saab Models

 

Important: This bulletin applies to Gas Powered Engines ONLY. For Diesel Powered Engines, refer to Service Bulletin #08-06-04-006A.

 

If a suspicious hard part failure is observed in the engine, transmission, transfer case or driveline, perform the calibration verification described to determine if a non-GM issued engine calibration is installed. Non-GM issued engine calibrations subject driveline components to stresses different than the calibrations which these components were validated to. Repairs to transmission, transfer case and/or other driveline components where a non-GM engine calibration has been verified are not covered under the terms of the New Vehicle Warranty.

 

Instructions for Confirming Calibration Verification Number (CVN):

 

1. Go to TIS2WEB

2. Select "Calibration Information (SPS Info)"

3. Enter VIN

4. Select "Get Cal ID"

5. Select "ECM Engine Control Module"

6. Select "Next"

7. Select "Complete History"

8. Print

9. Take the printout to the vehicle along with the Tech 2®

10. Plug in the Tech 2®

11. Go to diagnostics and build the vehicle

12. Select "Powertrain"

13. Select "Engine"

14. *Select "Engine Control Module" or "PCM"

15. *Select "Module ID Information" or "I/M Information System" if module ID information selection is not available.

16. *If "I/M information System" was selected in step 15, it may be necessary to select "Vehicle Information" in order to display the calibration information.

17. Compare the calibration ID and Calibration Verification Numbers (CVN) to the Calibration Verification Numbers (CVN) on the printout.

 

* Steps may vary by controller.

 

Although the part numbers will be the same for each, it's the CVN that will determine if the calibration is GM issued. If ALL of the CVN's are EXACTLY the same, the calibration is GM issued.

 

If the part numbers match and ANY CVN's DO NOT match the printout, it is likely that a non-GM certified calibration has been installed.

 

If the CVN information is displayed as "N/A", it will be necessary to contact the TCSC to obtain the CVN information.

 

If a non-GM calibration is found to be in the ECM (CVN's on the Tech 2 do not match TIS printout) - In order to document the case — a CLEAR digital picture should be taken of the Tech 2® screen showing the VIN and the CVN's that do not match the TIS2WEB printout. The picture, VIN and reason the vehicle is currently in for service should be emailed to [email protected] and STEVEN.R. [email protected] for verification. Please copy your GM District Service Manager (DVM) on the e-mail. GM will verify if the CVN's are not GM issued and respond via e-mail within 72 hours.

That is something I found on another GM board a while ago. They have the same ability on the gas engine equipped vehicles as the diesels.

So...bottom line is.....

 

If you want to test out the theory go ahead and try.

If you value your warranty...and are too scared...leave it stock.

 

Personally...I would try it....but I know my dealership wouldn't say anything. They loved how my truck drove with the tune that all the techs with silverados/serrias went out and got theirs tuned...actually the Finance guy did it for a couple of them with HP Tuners.

Yup.

Yup.

ok i blew my trans up and rear end at the same time and i have a edge programer, so i flashed it to stock tables, took the tuner off and the dealer came and got the truck. and never said anything about a tune being on it

    • I had an 88 K1500 with a 5.7 that had those symptoms, I know totally different, it ended up being the ECM. Once you get the fuel system fixed if it still runs lousy you may want to investigate that. it didn't set any codes, stalled ,ran rough at times etc
    • Congratulations Isttype, on your gmc. Really like my 2024 2500hd sle doublecab now with 85,500 miles.  I checked the oil today at 4800 miles since last oil change and barely reading on the stick.  I don't care if GM says it's Acceptable adding a quart every 2000 miles because that is 100% BS, It is not a 1966 Harley Shovelhead! Sounds like it's setting up a future failure like I had with my 1500 6.2l. Other than oil consumption problems, I really like the 6.6l gas and 10 speed is really nice.  Towed a light 4000 pound trailer last week and averaged 14 mpg.  I was pretty impressive that a 7300 pound gas truck did 14mpg towing, Later-
    • Long Term Cold Cycle Limited Testing   Back to the 1990's and XOM's million mile test. Since then there have been others and there will be more. Schaeffer's, AMSOIL to name two. These two links (above) provide the technical reasons for engine wear. In a nut shell, and by a large margin, cylinder wear is what takes out most motors and even with a pre-oiling system that part of the engine is dry enough on cold starts and cold warm up to pierce Stribeck.   So when you put a motor, or a car, on a dyno for a million miles stopping only for oil changes, (yes fuel is uninterrupted) or break down maintenance, you are depriving the test of the most important part of it's wear cycle. Yes a million is then a pretty easy walk even for a mineral oil under those conditions.    How about cleanliness during the long test cycles? Same thing. Varnishes that stick rings and insulate parts are laid down by repetitive 'heat cycles'. It's the cool down the precipitates the varnishes. These long runs also hinder acidic attack caused by cold start richness and less than optimal cold start ring sealing. They hinder water formation and enhance breathing of the crankcase; the petri dish of acid formation, the first step in sludge formation, amalgamation and precipitation. These motors are also monitored and controlled for water and oil temperatures to within the "normal operating range".      https://www.swri.org/sites/default/files/sequence-iiih-test.pdf Note the test sequence in some boutique oils literature for testing, API IIIH, is not the standard used for the ILSAC G7 testing. Does that mean it is irrelevant? No, not as used. As used as a 'visual guide' it makes it's point. The G7 weighted piston deposit minimum is lower.      Back to Schaeffer's. That was a cyclical test of an engine in fleet service and not a dyno mule and if you saw the video it was not mirror clean but wear was low.    There are oils like BioSyn and other 'Renewable" source oils that taught cleanliness and have proven themselves in fleet testing. Havoline an other example.    The newest ILSAC G-7 test prioritize cleanliness, LSPI mitigation and fuel economy OVER WEAR. In comparison Porsche C30 Specification Verses ILSAC G-7 Specification below:      Some will balk that this graph isn't apples to apples and I will challenge that in that this graph represent the SPECIFICATION and not the any One Oil Performance.   It is absolutely possible to minimize wear, maximize cleanliness and mitigate LSPI etc., It just isn't cheap and currently I see none that are not walking toward profit over performance.     
    • I don't think you will need a split, separate product, etc., the OBD port should be able to deliver everything you need. Since your device would be plugged into it all the time, it wouldn't miss anything.    Hardware in this case will be the easiest part of your project - ELM 327 devices will already deliver all the data you need. Reporting/software is where your advantage/marketability is.
