Do You Keep A Toolbox/tools In Your Truck?

Hey everyone. I was thinking about it today while driving my truck and was this close to heading down to a Sears/Menards/Lowe's or some sort to look at toolboxes. But then i resisted and thought I would post here and see what you guys had come up with and could post your pics up of your setup in our trucks.

So...how many people keep toolboxes in their trucks? Yes, its added weight sitting inside the box at all time, but if you offset it on the passengers side I am sure it wouldn't really matter. Do you keep a minimal toolbox? I was thinking of like a Craftsman's top toolbox with the lid that opens and with 3 drawers beneath that.

And if you do keep a toolbox what do you keep in it for tools? Like take for example a torque wrench, all the bumps/jarring can't be good for the calibration of the wrench can it? Or do you keep on in your truck. Am looking for some neat ideas, thoughts, before I go out and spend money and get everyone else's ideas and maybe help some others as well. Thanks!

I have a craftsman 204 piece tool set and it fits perfectly under the rear seat on my crew cab. Had a big deep over the rails tool box but got rid of it. I did not like how it looks with it on. I have been meaning to go buy the in bed style box but havent done it.

You dont need a tool box, you drive a Chevy!

I carry a recovery bag (30' strap, gloves, clevis), jumper cables, and Gerber vehicle survival kit (shovel, hammer, axe, pick, saw). Plenty of people just beggin to be pulled out around these parts.

True! Tell that to the guy that gives me so much crap for my Chevy, don't worry i give him just as much crap about his Dodge. Good idea though, a bag. I live on gravel so over time the box gets a thin layer of dust in it and the toolbox would be dusty, so a bad is a better idea. Keep my tow strap in there, my receiver hitch and pin, and then the tools I add over time. Clevis is a good one though and was thinking about that pulling trees the other day with the tractor.

Keep them coming and thanks for the replies so far! The reason I wanted the toolbox to was to put my new BlackBear performance decal and a few others on it! :(

I have something very similar under the seat in my crew cab, along with a bunch of various ratchet straps, tie downs, tow/recovery straps, a collapsible shovel, etc.

Thing is, other than the cargo and towing stuff I usually only use the tools if I'm out someplace and need to do a job not related to fixing something on a vehicle.

been contimplating the same thing, was going to get a big ol toolbox to put on the trucks bed but i diden't want that big bulky thing blocking my window let alone soaking up bed space...been thinking about getting a small toolbox to carry my tools but i have so many and its just too hard to pick and choose which ones to come...

Try a low profile box, mine doesnt block my view at all

I carry a 4 ton floor jack, tow strap, a bunch of ratchet tie downs, bungee cords, tarps, folding shovel, fire extinguisher, bag of hand tools (screw drivers, wrenches, etc). Probably more I am forgetting

I still have the toolbox (deep, over the rail) from my 1/2 ton, but I haven't put it on my current truck. It still has about 400# of tools in it sitting under the shelter.

I too have been thinking of an under the rail toolbox, especially the GM Cargo Management System setup, but can talk myself into spending that much coin.

I really do miss the capacity though. It was a great place to keep tools without junking up the interior.

With the height of my truck bed, I would have to climb into the bed to get anything out of it. (hence the GM system)

I store my tools, straps, tie-downs, ball mount, etc in a Rubbermaid storage bin in the bed of my truck. It's held in place by a cargo bar. I like this approach because I have too much stuff to store under the rear seat and if I ever needed full use of the bed, I can easily remove the bin (as opposed to a fixed tool box that would be a PITA to remove).

I keep on in my truck with basic toos (wrenches, ratchets, sockets) tie downs, a recovery strap and clevice for my hitch, 3" drop hitch with ball and all of the attaching hardware. Yes, the box is going to add some weight, but empty mine weighs maybe 50-60 pounds.

Great replies guys. Good to know what other are carrying around and how they are. Here is what I was kinda thinking along the lines for a toolbox, since I have a hard cover on my truck, and then this way i can take it out if i need or want to set it out to get to the tools easier. And it should be heavy enough once a few tools are in it, it shouldn't slide around on my rubber mat in the box.

I would keep a tow strap in it, my receiver, the hitch pin, a draw pin, wrenches, socket and sockets, the socket for my lug nuts, maybe a torque wrench, rachet traps/tie-downs, and a few bungy straps. So maybe that wouldn't even all fit in either of these!

I have roughly the same set up, I cut a piece of plywood to fit the floor of the bed and bolted a plastic walmart toolbox to it, works great and i can pull the whole thing out if i need to.
