My new 09 Silverado crew cab has the Summit White paint. It was built in Mexico. I'm noticing some very tiny little rust spots on the paint, and some dime-sized rust spots on one corner of the back chrome back bumper. Less than 4000 miles on truck. It was a rough winter, but I wasn't expecting this! I don't know if it was trucked or came via rail from Mexico. Thought they had the train cars covered now.

Is this a typical problem? Any ideas on what to do about tiny little spots would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Do a google search on the term "rail-dust"

Your local dealer will smooth out your paint, if you like

Read your owners manual..there is a subject that states your selling dealer will repair this, generally free of charge, within 1 year or 12k miles, from the date of delivery.

Personally, I would "clay-bar" the truck MYSELF, then follow up with a good coat of wax.

Mine was just like that this spring. Clay bar will remove all the little rust spots. I experimented arounf before the clay bar and it cost me $400.00 to fix my screw up. Just use the clay bar or like previously mentioned, the dealer will clar bar it once while in warranty.

like stated above its rail dust. It shows up noticably on lighter colored vehicles.

Try some products like the following to remove the iron and then clay bar and then protect (sealant and or wax). This will be better than anything the dealer will do, in many cases possibly make it worse or only temporarily fix it?

Did you try the clay bar as mentioned above? If the clay bar removes the "rust" it is not rusting through the paint, but more so of a issue with metal particles/filings sticking to your paint.

Thanks Guys, I am confused as why the customer has to take care of it? Is there something that can neutralize it? I have not tried a clay bar. I am going to see what the dealer has to say about it?

I cannot have a truck the rusts in the first 4 months of owning it..

The truck is not rusting its the contaminants on the paint that are rusting.

Get use to them. This is the biggest down side from buying a white vehicle. It could be rail dust (from being transported on a train) but can come from many things.. even the brakes on your truck, the vehicle in front of you or the pullants in the air. There is not much you can do to prevent them from coming back. Keep a good coat of wax on it all the time and stay on top of it.

Thank You all. I went to the dealership today and that was an interesting trip. Talked to 2 different people. Service writer & Service manager. Both I know well as I have owned GM vehicles my whole life. I received 2 different story's, 1. Being in Utah it is caused by snowplow blades and salt. Second story was "Rail dust" we see it all the time and every vehicle has it. I told them I have a heated Garage and it has hot water and a drain! I wash it every time it snows and reminded him it is only 4 months old. They proceeded to send me to another location which is the "Auto body shop" and talk to Brian. He went through a text book discussion and never answered any of my questions on why it is like this being a brand new truck? It was a shady conversation!? never being answered to any of your questions and only being asked what time would you like to come in and we can acid wash you truck, GM will only do this once and if it happens again you are responsible to remedy it due to our climate? OMG....Both the Service Manager and the Body shop guy told me this. I am the Customer, i didn't do anything wrong, why am I treated like I drove it through acid rain or something!

Anyways thanks to all of you for the responses and I will go get an acid bath on a brand new truck and see what happens in the future. I dont get it??

Do yourself a favor. Forget the dealer, and get a bottle of scratch remover wax from Auto Zone. It comes in a yeallow bottle and it is gentle enough not to damage the clearcoat, but it will remove the contaminants in the paint. A little work is all that is needed If you push the dealer to do something about it, they may simply send it to some body shop where a 16 year old kid will remove 1/2 the thickness of the clearcoat with a buffer. And then you will have real problems.

clay it and be done.

as stated in another post even brake dust will cause this over time.

get it off now before it does any damage. if you care about it that much an hour with a clay won't kill you...
