Fuel Pump Replacement

Recommended Posts

I know I am going to be doing this job next weekend when I go back home. What is the easiest way to get to the pump. I have thought about pulling the bed and I have thought about dropping the tank. To pull the bed I was thinking all I needed to do was disconnect the the tail lights and slide the bad back till I see the fuel pump.

Are there any special tools that are needed?

Any and all help is welcome so don't hold back. This will be me and my son doing this job.

Eddie, have you tried a search? I think there is a thread or two here about such. One slides the bed, removes the bed and you can prop the bed up...remove tailgate etc...a fuel pump search should bring up a bunch of threads...

I found removing the bed is easiest.

Agreed, I just did mine by dropping tank, all I can say is Arghhhhh.... It was a bear (of course I kept about 5 gals. in it because I didn't have a container to drain it) But the problem was finding all the wire harnesses to disconnect before dropping fully. Getting the darn Fuel Hose off of top of tank was a treat too (There are two hoses one within the other). Then putting it all back was really "special"... I chose this method because I didn't have a team to help me lift bed. Subsequently I saw you can lift just one side of bed in some posts here (good for one man job)....Darn wish I saw that one earlier.

Unless you run the tank dry often or have well over 180000 miles on your truck i doubt the pump is bad. Have you checked fuel pressure and injector balance?

Red,

I've had to replace mine every 60k miles or so, but that was when i was doing lots of sitting and idling all day...I filled it every day and it usually never dropped below 1/4 full most of the time

my truck (00 ECSB 2wd 5.3l) currently has 372k miles on it and 14000 hours...before I usually used junkyard specials because no one but dealers had them for the first couple years...this last one was store-bought...and has lasted a few years since I don't drive it enough now...

Lots of GMT 800 fuel pumps have been going way before 180k, more like 80k seems a good number when you gotta start getting worried.

Unbolt the bed.... slide it back or jack up that corner (if you use the jack method don't forget to leave the bolts in on the passengers side)

Are you referring to the 2003 and earlier trucks as they had return fuel systems and the OP has a returnless and have proven more reliable.

I dropped my tank.. Two jacks(one for the truck and one for the tank), some hand tools and you are ready to rock..

The filler neck was by far the worst part,, but the tank straps were no problem, fuel lines were a breeze..

It's really just personal choice.. If you use your truck in the woods alot though, remove the bed and clean everything under the back while you have it off..

I have had 2 GM trucks with fuel pumps that died. One (2004) at 15k, 1 year after purchase. The other (2008) at 23k, 2 years after purchase. Oh, and neither had their tanks run dry. So it can happen

He stated earlier that he checked pressures. Pressure was extremely low and would drop to zero immediately after key off.

My wife just called and said the Chevy dealer called and is going to replace the pump under warranty. I am really surprised by this but am really grateful at the same time too. So, I would hope the dealer uses an ACDelco unit.

Apparently this falls under the 100k warranty. Very good for me, now I do not have to worry about dropping the tank or pulling the bed to one side. I have been trying to work out all the logistics since I work out of town and am only home during the weekends.

Thanks for all of the replies and help. I am sure I will be asking for more as I go along.
