Was The 5.3l Avaible For 3/4 Ton Pu In 2000 & 2001?

I laugh at them saying a 5.3 wouldnt have the power to match a 3/4 ton.. Shit remember the 3500 cab / chassis that would get huge huge tool box beds and what not thrown on them? Or DUMP BOXES? The majority of those only had a 350 chevy, which if you compare the specs, is no contest.

 

A 350 has much more torque and no GM bs to limit power the 5.3l is what a 5.0l used to be, IMO. The 350 was plenty sufficient because of the PURE power it made, a 5.3l in a 3/4 ton pulling a heavy trailer would be straining much more than a 6.0l and it would get worse mileage.

My 05 5.3 has 295 HP and 335 ft lbs torque...

 

Well, HP and torque numbers aren't always true measures of real usable power. In the 5.3l, you won't use all that power because of TM and AM and whatnot computer stuff that limits power. Now the TBI 350s were also the same way, but the ones with carbs weren't controlled or limited by a computer.

I have to disagree somewhat. I'm not sure which 350 you are referring to, but I have had 2 different 94 1500's with the 350, and my 2009 5.3 will do everything better than the 350 would, including towing 6000lb boats. Maybe the later ones were much better.

 

My Boss has the 2003 2500HD Crew Cab 2wd truck with the 6.0l and it gets 13mpg in the city, and if you drive it extremely carefully, you can get 13.8 on the highway. It does have a LOT more torque right off the bottom, but once the little 5.3 gets the revs up above 2500 or so, it will pull right there with the 6.0.

 

I do think the 5.3 would have done fine in a 2500HD with the 3.73 for the use the OP is looking at, but that wasn't an option. I do think a 1500 with air bags would be a better solution if he isn't pulling very much weight.

My trucks not limited by computer nanies either, I have no TM on my engine, and if you look at the the original poster needs the truck for, surely even you will agree a 5.3l would be MORE then adequet. My funniest thing is you guys on this forum who always chime in saying oh no, thats not enough, you need airbags and a 6.0L and and and... to pull a fricken camper, REALLY? I don't think many on here are more then weekend atv warriors or hauling lawn clippings, if you wanted a real truck you'd just get a dmax, end of story, not any of this i cant justify the 6-7k add on, truth is, I like my truck cause it's a D/D that I can haul a skidsteer with, pull a camper, or just tote around my motorcycle which is mainly what it's used for.

Late 70s early 80s truck 350 with a carb....

 

V-8 350 - Net HP 155 at 3600 RPM. Max. torque 225 ft. lbs at 2400 RPM.

 

Look, I'm not starting an argument all I'm saying is that carbed vehicle had a different kind of power than EFI cars do. :ughdance: I.e. more power at low end.

To get serious, I have been driving since 1960. I have had all the small blocks made, 262, 265, 272, 283, 302, 307, 327, 350, and a 400 plus a couple pf 348s and a 409. Yeah I know they weren't small blocks.

 

The trucks today do every thing better, not even a contest...

I have friends with the 6l--they do not like it one bit, and is more problematic than the 5.3. And it gets a lot poorer gas mileage, I asked around and it seems the 5.3l get a good 3 MPG better.

 

 

As I always say who buys a truck for gas mileage? My 6.0l gets about the same than my 2006 5.3l got to let you know. My 6.0 is faster and could haul & tow better than my old 5.3. Both engines are pretty reliable though. Liked the 5.3 a lot but after owning a 6.0 I don't think I can go back to a 5.3l, next truck will be a 6.2l with 6 speed auto with 3.73 gears, screw the mileage.

I've outrun every 5.3l I've raced and the 4.8l are SLOW. I love the 6.0l, it's the same engine as the 5.3l with a bigger bore. I don't know how you can justify problems with the 6.0l and not with the 5.3l since they're the same setup and same parts. The only thing I don't like about it are the 4.10s in the rear, I wish it had 3.73s for a little less rpms when cruising.

 

 

Wanna race a newer 6.0? I'm thinking of adding 4.10, I got 3.73 now.

I never said that there were different types of HP, I said there were different types of power, in general. I've driven many 350 and 305 trucks in my past, yes they feel low on power, but when you hook them up to a trailer they still pull like there's nothing behind them. A 5.3l feels powerful and pulls pretty good, but putting one in a 3/4 ton is just plain stupid. Oh, yeah, I will have a "good" one! :lol: Thank you.

What performance mods have you done to your 6.0? My 4 Speed Is a HydraMatic 4l70e Heavy Duty Transmission With Overdrive lol.

I have had no problems at all with my 6.0l, not even one! It's also pretty efficient, it gets 16 mpg with the tuner and about 14-15 without it. I've outrun every 5.3l I've raced and the 4.8l are SLOW. I love the 6.0l, it's the same engine as the 5.3l with a bigger bore. I don't know how you can justify problems with the 6.0l and not with the 5.3l since they're the same setup and same parts. The only thing I don't like about it are the 4.10s in the rear, I wish it had 3.73s for a little less rpms when cruising.

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
