Afm And Oil Consumption

2010 Silverado 5.3......No oil used

My Brothers 2010 5.3........No oil used

2008 V-Max 6.0..........No oil used

Seems like it few and far between.

The few people that are unfortunate to have oil burners, post in here to get advice (so we see it a lot, however we will not post if we don't have a problem). If we ran a poll on it then you would see it is not that common.

My truck 08, my brothers 10, my buddies 07 all dont burn oil. Mine has 71,000 miles now too.

There's a serious flaw with forum polls, especially of this nature. First, you only catch folks who happen to visit during their viewing window. Next, there are too many details to consider for a small group (type of oil and change interval, mileage, typical use, etc.). It's actually the *lack* of AFM oil consumption threads that I find most interesting. We get one here and there, with a wave of anti-AFM posts.... most (all?) of which don't even own a 5.3/AFM motor. It has been rare for an existing, active "member" to post an oil consumption thread. In fact, I don't recall one in the past 2.5 years that I've been visiting the forum (but I could have missed it). I can't vote for them, but my neighbor and a coworker have the same motor/year as I do... and neither have oil issues. That's three that I know personally, and 100% normal operation.

although the number of people with oil burners are minimal, today I spoke with two guys I know and both have the problem....one is an an 07 with low Km and burning over a quart in 3000km and the other is an 08 with low km that burned a quart and a half in 1500km...he had his lifters redone and so far so good

08 17K miles LY5 5.3L Iron block. Truck has no noticeable oil consumption @ 5-8K mile oil change intervals. Started M1 Syn 5W-30 @ 1K miles. Coworkers @ work have 3 2010 Silvy's w 5.3L Flex Fuel AFM Alum block motors that have no problems.

I think all those having AFM issues should get together and if GM still can't fix the problem, demand that GM buys the trucks back or think about a class action lawsuit, that might get things going with GM.

What's funny is that for every post on here about "AFM motors burn oil", less than one in ten is actually a 5.3/AFM owner (edit: made up number there, but you get the idea). By far, most of the 5.3 and 6.0 AFM owners on this board report no issues. I'm one of 'em.

Some of us didn't buy a 5.3 BECAUSE of AFM. Oil consumption is a very well known issue with these engines. My buddy's Chevrolet Dealership has been advised to keep quiet on the subject - "unofficially" of course.

They are busy replacing lifters.

Not to sound argumentative, but I was referring to members active on the site prior to starting an "oil burner" thread. It seems that most of the threads have been started by "new folks" who began posting for that reason.

Some of us didn't buy a 5.3 BECAUSE of AFM. Oil consumption is a very well known issue with these engines. My buddy's Chevrolet Dealership has been advised to keep quiet on the subject - "unofficially" of course.

How many (or percent) is he saying that they see at their dealership?

Edit: Come to think of it, what have the lifters to do with oil consumption? I remember a bunch of posts a while back about "ticking at startup", to which GM responded with a TSB to replace lifters. It wasn't related to oil consumption, iirc? The only TSB I've seen on here for consumption had to do with return oil splashing on the lower block. If that didn't fix it, then the repair involved replacing pistons/rings? Too late to search... maybe tomorrow.

I came here before I bought my truck and read the AFM issue. I liked the truck so much I still bought it. Even tho I ended up with one of the problem engines, I will still drive it to its grave. Gm seems to be trying to do something. More than I can say for the Fords I've owned. My wife has an HHR and they have bent over backwards to fix anthing that comes up. She came home 1 day with melted front hubcaps. GM replaced the whole front end just to be safe they said. Anyway I got the first check today for the consumption. 3/4 qt. in 1200 miles. Running Mobil 1 full syn. changing at 5k intervals. Iron block. 55k on the clock. No lifter noise on startup. No missfires. Runs strong. I voted in the poll, and l do feel like the ones having the problem, should post under 1 thread in order to get more accurate info. But how can it be kept bumped to the top where most can see where to post?

I think the problem is with dealers not GM when it come to fixing things, and warranty work, good dealers would know how to address things to GM, then GM can't refuse the repair!. Some dealers can't do a major repair without making another problem which expose them to GM, that's why they tell customers, it's NORMAL, we never heard of this problem, they may keep your truck for a while just because!

Also, owners need to address problems from day one, you should report the problem each time you take your truck to the dealer, make sure the dealer is well aware of the issue and that you will not settle for any thing less than a full repair. It will help a a lot if you report the problem directly to GM at least one time!.

In the 3 months (and around 4k miles) I've had the Avalanche, I've had to add two quarts.
