I'm tring to figure out how to install and where to find a block heater for my 5.3. I'm under the impression that they went to screw in plugs. Does anyone know where I can find a screw in block heater or if Chevy dealers sell them.

Its located on the drivers side of the block, above the oil filter,Its a brass 17mm hex head plug (although it may not look brass due to age/dirt)

Your dealer can get one,or NAPA also can get them.

Got mine from O'Reilly's. The socket to take the plug out cost me about as much as the heater itself. Works great though. -15 this morning, glad I had it. Easy install, I just wish they made the cords a bit longer.

so does anyone know if the know if the GM ones turn on at 0*. I was looking for something that would stay on all the time or at 32*

The GM models kick in at 0 F and below unless you remove the built in thermostat

You can buy a regular (non-thermostatically controlled) block heater replacement cord/plug at NAPA to replace the OE one and it will be on any time the extension cord is energized.
