Rust Under Clearcoat

Recommended Posts

I have a white 2007 GMC Sierra 4x4 crew cab. Anybody ever notice any rust that seems to be under the clearcoat? I've tried to buff it out but it will not come clean. I have spots all over the truck. The truck sits in the driveway 90% of the time. I live in the country and there are no factories or anything near that could fall on the truck to cause this. Just asking if anyone has any ideas what this might be or has anyone ever seen this before?

P.S. I tried the search option and nothing came up.

If you live in a part of the Country where your truck would have been delivered by rail (train), it could be metalic dust from the rail wheels. There is a solution at your local body shop, where they clay bar the truck in a way to clean and buff the finish.

Like previously stated looks like raildust. Claybar and it should be fine

this has happened to the last 4 white vehicles ive owned......its always over the winter and they never accumulate over the summer

and if you look close enough, my black truck is also covered with them

every spring i have to polish the paint with a buffer

and i dont live anywhere near rail tracks

Small metal particles that come off of the snow plow blades would do the exact same thing as rail dust i would think, especially if you do alot of highway driving.

Yup...I had the exact same thing.

Clay Bar fixed it right up....along with the tar thats stuck to it everywhere from all the road work.

Your not rusting.

i thought it was rust until i discovered it on the plastic bumper

Actually, it is rust, but on small metal particles that are not a part of your truck, stuck to the truck finish.

:) Rail Dust was just confirmed by the dealer on my new black Silverado. I purchased this paint protector stuff (Zxylon) from the dealer when I bought my truck and, when picking up the truck after applying the Zxylon last week, carefully went over the entire truck - examining the paint. Since it is frequently dark and rains a lot up here in the Pacific Northwest, I hadn't spotted it before, but there were miniscule spots on the hood and roof of the truck that showed up out in the sun. At first, I thought the Zxylon had screwed up my paint, but after speaking with the detailer and service advisor, I was informed that they were likely Rail Dust, but that the dealer Operations Director would have go get a look at it before warranty work could begin. Today, I took the truck down to verify and we all checked out the problem. The Operations Director verified that the truck does indeed have Rail Dust on the paint, and will be working with GM to schedule a repainting of the hood and roof (the two effected areas). My dealer and GM have been really responsive in addressing my concerns, and appear to be taking swift action to solve this issue. Recently owning an Acura and being familiar with their service department, I'd say that GM and Chevrolet have been equal to, if not better than Acura when it comes to resolving a car problem. They're going to take the truck in for painting next week and give me a loaner while it's in the shop. The Operations Director also told me that the work is covered by whatever warranty the truck had (including my GMPP). He says the body shop they use does a great job that is indistinguishable from new. You can't ever have 100% perfection, but the key is how you deal with issues - GM (thus far) has been great. Stay tuned...
