remote starter and locks

Recommended Posts

I borrowed my dads toy- 94 Suburban 4x4 1500 v8 auto. The starter kicked in while I was on the highway and fried. I was towed to a small garage and they replaced the starter which got me going but the remote doesn't work for the doors or the start. The garage sez he doesn't "know nofin' bout dem tings". Anybody have any ideas - I want to give the truck back the way I got it because you know how dads are about their trucks.

Sounds like the remote starter fried. I used to have one, and they had safeties in them to stop them from engaging the starter when the vehicle was already running. Perhaps it wasn't hooked up correctly. Oh, and let's not forget the simple things to check, are the in-line fuses for the starter blown?

My remote truck starter has an on/off switch mounted at the bottom of the dash. I was informed by the installer to turn the unit off before giving anyone a jump-start or any electrical work being performed. I made the assumption that the unit can fry under certain conditions. Maybe it just blew a fuse for the power to the remote starter unit.

Bob G raises a good point. I jump started the car that had the starter in it, and did fry it. I had to have it replaced. Should have pulled the fuse as instructed in the manual.

Thanks guys- took it to a stereo shop and they put a new "module" in and everything works. They found a raw spot on my main battery cable that could have starteda fire.
