So, I have this broke 4L60 transmission won't shift out of 2nd. I'm told these were used in Corvettes? Why are they in a truck? Can they be upgraded? I can get it rebuilt for $1500 but obviously it's a piece of crap. Can you give me some options? What about putting in a standard transmission? Or is there too much computer junk involved?

just because it broke doesn't mean it is crap. everything has a life expectancy and everything will eventually break. that's LIFE. how many miles does it have? anything over 200,000 and i'd say thats a pretty reliable transmission

rebuilding it is the easiest option and cheaper option unless you can find one in good shape in a junkyard. which will most likely need to be rebuilt as well

At 12 years old, I'm assuming 15,000 miles a year, so 180,000 miles on it? Sounds pretty reasonable to me. You can most likely get it rebuilt for a reasonable price at a trusted local shop.

ok then.... get your trans rebuilt then get a truck that dosent have a 4L60 in it, or just get it rebuilt and keep your truck because its a good trans..

The 4L60 has been used in a great many vehicles for a great many years. It was not a Corvette exclusive product. I've had this transmission in last 2 vehicles with over 150k miles with no problems. Its a solid transmission that's worth getting rebuilt & reinstalled if done properly.

Its so good they used it in a corvette, did you ever think of that?

I think you need to find somewhere else to act like an idiot. I'm the only idiot around here but I do it with style, which you have none of.

After reading both of your posts, you do drive a piece of crap. You sure can bitch a lot.

The 4L60E will do the job for you, after you have it rebuilt. Be sure and get the upgrades for it. It's a good trans and can easily run well past 100k when maintained and not abused past what it's rated for

Wonder if 15" wheels would have preserved the trans a bit longer  Sorry my apologies for the jab

sorry i just feel the need to interject here a slight bit. first off you have a 4l60e not a 4l60, and contrary to popular belief this trans is not a new conception by any means. the story begins way back with the700r4 (which technically is what you have in your truck) the 700r4 was renamed to the 4l60 in the early 90's to give meaning to the name more than just a model number, in the early mid 90's engineers added electronic shift control thusly adding the E after the 4l60.

more techy info is that the more particular parts to the "4l60e" that are "weak" would be the accumulators which are prone to pin wear at 120-170000 miles, or the sunshell which has a "weak" point that can be upgraded with a product called the beast sunshell, all the way to a small set of loading springs that can be removed for a better hold in the 2-3 range, and a nice upgrade would be to change from the standard band servo to the CORVETTE servo. the reason all uses of weak are in quotations is due to dodge misinterpretations of what gm would consider weak, dodge would consider bulletproof and well above expectation. :jester:

long story short its the same trans that has been kickin backside for nearly 20 years now, and i was deeply offended  not really

OK, it's got 124000 miles. I agree with 200000 miles, wish I got there.

That's the reason I'm on here; I've been messing with this truck more than a year; asking guys at work and garages. First the transmission then the ABS (still a problem) So I have to get tires if I keep it and those have to be 16s. And I still owe money on the truck. I have to be sure it's worth the effort or get something newer. I really like the truck, extended cab 8ft bed.

I actually read a similar description that also said the e is generally not used today since all of the transmissions are electronic now so there's no need to add the e. That's why I left it off.

So, rebuild and get the upgrades and I've got a few more years of it? I hope...I just bought new 16" tires for it.

Sure but there's huge differences in torque and load between a car and a truck. A car transmission in a truck usually isn't a good idea.
