Arggg..running In Auto 4x4 Mode For The Last Week

 So I have finally found something to complain about on my 2007 Silverado LTZ ECSB. I guess I have been running around for about a week in AUTO instead of 2H mode. I suspect I moved the switch when I cleaned the interior last week. I also purchased some new snow tires this week and thought this was the reason for drag on the drive train and the slightly added noise. I only noticed the switch position when I dropped my keys on the floor and reached over to pick them up. I switched back and went for drive and all is well as before.

Who ever designed the 4x4 switch to be hidden from normal view AND decided to not install an indicator in the dash should be severely reprimanded. Even the Fog Lghts have a dash indicator...what a cluster.

OK, I feel better now...

BTW, I needed new tires on my winter wheels, so I decided to go with dedicated snow tires this year for the first time ever. I now have Hankook iPike RW11 (275/60-20) on the OEM alloy wheels. I was using the LS2 as my winter tire but it was time for a new set. Jury is out as no snow/ice yet, but it has been raining and so far they are working well for these conditions. we shall see...

You shouldn't notice any extra drag or noise from being in auto 4. You can run in auto 4 on dry pavement all day long. Now 4HI is a different story.

Exactly. I have had mine in auto a few times and never felt anything.

My understanding is when it is in Auto 4x4 everything is just like in 2wd until there is tire slippage and then it goes into 4Hi. I run it in Auto some times in heavy rain, so when I take off from a light I don't have any wheel spin.

When you put it in auto, the front diff actuator engages and the t-case shift motor preloads the clutch, prepping it for almost seamless reaction once slippage occurs.

On some vehicles, this clutch preload is enough to be felt when on dry pavement and turning. On other vehicles, you wont notice it at all.

+1. On my '00, I ran auto all the time since the supercharger put out too much power for 2wd. You only noticed it when doing tight turns at really low speed. Then I'd get wheel slip (chatter) on dry pavement.

Nice to have all the power on demand without lighting up the tires.

I can tell ever so slight the diff between 2H and Auto. The new tires are very soft (winter tires) and since I started out in Auto when I put the new tires on I suspected that it was them causing the "new sensation" I was feeling. After moving the switch back, I was back to the typical seat of the pants feel that I was used to despite the new tires. I am peeved about the lack of a usable indicator as the switch led is useless from a visual and practical standpoint. There are a few other areas that they could penny pinch on if the wanted to save the cost of a dash LED/mask. The ironic thing is the manual transfer case gets a cluster indicator and you can readily see the position of the floor lever. I am not concerned about running in AUTO mode. I just didn't know that I was for a week. The aftermarket dash indicator solution is rather pricey, but if I replace my gauge overlay (one that I can see with sun glasses on in the daylight, another pet peeve) I may consider it.

I can tell I've left it in auto when I turn the key to ACC and slightly hear the xfer case clutches engage. Other than that, and a slight decrease in mpg, it doesn't hurt anything. Now, 4wd HI *should* have an indicator. Been there, done that...

i have had 4 vehicles with autotrac and on every one i can hear a faint sound, almost like a rasp. my dads does this as well. also i agree about the dash indicator light. whatever communist economist that thought it would be a good idea to leave the light off should have his "D" indicator light removed from his CAR, then maybe we will see some change for the better. I have noticed that while driving in Autotrac i get slightly worse fuel economy. i assume this is beacuse of some sort of added parts moving.

I once was towing for 600 miles in auto, don't think any damage was done just used up more gas. I couldn't figure out why I was gassing up so often. One of the reasons I invented this thing:

are those available??? i see that thread is pretty old...

Yeah I posted in that thread a little bit back to try and revive it to see if anything was updated with the lights. You have any update cgalford? I've visited your website as well.

I installed Chris's 4x4 indicator dash light mod kit over a year ago and it was one of the best things I've done to the truck. It is not for the faint hearted though and requires some mechanical ability and patience to do it, but he has good color instructions and there is also youtube videos. Cannot figure out what they are thinking at GM not making that idiot lite functional in the first place!
