I just bought a 1990 K1500 single cab chevy with the 350. I wrote all the RPO codes down and went inside to look them all up. Turns out this thing's got the F44 option, along with several other heavy duty options. Heavy duty suspension, brakes, radiator, oil and trans cooler, the whole nine yards.

 

Thing is, I have been researching this F44 option, and most places say that with that code it should have the 14 bolt, six lug rear end. Mine doesn't. Its got a ten bolt, five lug, 3.73 rear end.

 

What gives? Did the original owner alter the option package or something?

someone took your 14bolt. So your truck is 4wd? If so, someone swapped out your axle for a 2wd axle.

Just checked again and it actually has six lugs. Can't count or something. But its a ten bolt, six lug.

 

And yeah, it should be 4x4. But I have not really had a chance to test it out.

I wanted to bring this back up, mostly because it is bugging the crap out of me.

 

If I have the F44 code, does that definitely mean it should have a 14-bolt rear diff?

 

Because I have a 10-bolt six lug rear diff.

 

I think there was a code for the ratio, is there a way to find out the ratio when physically looking at differential?

I have a 89 F44, I know they came with the 10 bolt rear end, 6 lug. Mine has it and I know thats how it came when it was new.

Maybe you could order it with the 14-bolt rear, that I don't know.

If your chassis is F44 package, your rear axle should also be a 1 ton axle. 3.73 gears normally.

 

Mine is an 89' Sierra C1500 SLX with the F44 heavy duty frame package. I want to know if the front brake calipers and pads on your trucks are HD or regular duty? I had a hell of a time getting the correct brake pads and rotors, because of not knowing this. I'm not sure if all these trucks were supposed to have HD front ends, as well. But if theres a parts package to upgrade the front end, I'd love to do it.

 

Everything else on my truck is HD/high capacity/large components even though it has a puny 305 lol which is soon to be swapped for a rebuilt 350.

 

Hope this info helps and I hope you guys get back to me. PS- this is the BEST way to learn about these trucks, GM (archive) headquarters knows about as much as we all do HA!

I have a k1500 350 5.7 4l60e 3:73. 1997 ext cab 3rd door f44 seminfloat 4x4. I believe the front end is normal 1500 duty. I ordered a power stop drilled and slotted rotor front brake kit that came with new calipers pads and rotors. Everything fit just fine and it stops a lot better. Ordered powerstop kit from summit or rock auto. Only issue I had was buying rear shoes since the f44 takes the wider brake shoes (Napa had to order) vs the narrower shoes for 10 bolt.

All 1/2 tons (1500) come with 6-bolt wheels, no exceptions. 

 

From what I can see, both the standard and F44 come with the same rear axle.  F44 is a suspension option.

I've only seen the ext.cab 1500 4x4 come with the semi- floating 14 bolt axle. ( In a half ton) and it's a 6 lug. I don't think I've ever seen a reg. cab come from the factory with a 14 bolt.. except the 454ss.

these trucks could be anything.

 

the factory manual trans v8 is badly missing the F44...especially after 96. the 60+ hp.  no matter the chassis.

my own has been done over at least 3 times, and then just oil alone finally burrowed a pin hole in the cap.

it sends it.

 

I'd like to find that rear end in a junk yard or wherever.

Well now...all 2wd 1500 up until 1999 GMT-800 were 5 lug.

This is wrong. All 4x4 half tons came 6 lug and most all 2wd half tons came with 5 lug hubs. On top of that, any 4x4 F44 CHASSIS truck came with a 6 LUG 14 bolt rear.

    • Most thermostatically controlled ATF systems use a 'wax' pill just like the one in your water thermostat. They work on the expansion volume of the wax and the pill is constructed in such a way as to limit the travel to remain within that range. This means it has an opening temperature often called the 'cracking temperature' and a fully open temperature. For whatever reason oil is designated by it's fully open temperature and water by it's cracking temperature.    Between the two it the "Regulating Temperature" The entire range is about 20 F from closed to open. In your example the lower limit, opening point of 145 F then has a fully open temp of 165 F and a throttling temperature of 155 F.    Thing is, the throttling temperature needs two things to work properly. Enough system load high enough to reach the minimum and a heat sink (cooler/exchanger) large enough to prevent any load applied from exceeding the fully open temperature.    If your system exceeds the fully open temperature it is screaming MORE COOLER.    Here is the silly part of the whole thermostat system where the oil is cooled/heated by the radiator. Nothing is flowing to that system until the oil temperature reaches the cracking temperature unless it is equipped with a minimum flow bypass orifice or a bypass built into the seating surface of the plunger. That system meant to get it up to temp quicker isn't doing a thing until WORK drives if from ambient to cracking temp. One a cold winter day, like zero F, it may never get hotter than about 110 F. Sometimes not even that.    People forget or are young enough to not know that until this millennia transmissions were cooled by the radiator cold tank alone and without a thermostat at all.  In the 50's they weren't even cooled. OEMs learn everything the hard way.    When an OEM tells you the trans "Works best" between 175 F and 220 F it means works best for THEM. The transmission thermostat is fuel play. If you watch you trans temps like I do you will learn that it may take a hundred miles if you are not towing and not driving more than say 55-60 mph on a zero F day to even reach 120 F and it might sit there all day if it's colder. Yet if functions perfectly over about 100 F. It may need to get a bit warmer for the fuel and spark maps to go without an multiplier.    Worry more about too hot. Use a cooler large enough to put that thermostat in range.         
    • Around 2008 if memory serves they took sulfur out. That was when diesel went up. 
    • Question for you Grumpy, why is diesel so much more than gasoline? Seems to me that it may be slightly a little less refined than gas and it doesn't have 10% alcohol which presumably lowers the price of gas

    • How many years have I pointed out every point in that link to the folks here and been avalanched with criticisms and outright hostilities at times? I ran counter to even the great CUSTOMBOSS and Lake Speed Jr and the half dozen experts on YouTube and in the final.....GM, Physics (Stribeck) backs that Grumpy old Bear.    Honestly, I never said a thing engineering hadn't studied silly and laid in concrete during WWII. But I'm old, the information is old and yet, the Laws of Physics are eternal.    Okay there is one exception. I vehemently disagree with their use of the word 'tolerances' when what it meant is "clearance".   The clearance is the distance between two objects. The tolerance is the degree of acceptable variation permitted in that clearance. I.E., piston to bore clearance is 0.004" with a tolerance of +/- .0002" so the clearance is in specification if it lies between 0.0038" and 0.0042". Cutting that 'tolerance in half has ZERO impact on lubrication requirements. Makes for more difficulty in manufacturing.  But a tighter clearance 'MAY'. Depends on finish. Anyway....   It's one of those statements made by people to make themselves look smarter than they are to convince people who are as un-enlighten as they seem to manipulate their behaviors. But hey, the blind leading the blind puts them both in the pit.
