I just recently checked my spare tire for the first time in over 10 years - was completely FLAT! The bead area of the rim was all corroded, and all the air just leaked out from there. Had to break it down, wire wheel the corrosion off, then used rust-proofing bead lube to remount the wheel, aired it up, and blasted the bead area with LPS-3 - should be good for another decade I figure. [emoji4] Was also a good time to blast the winch and cable with oil.
 
 Good idea to check that spare every so often! I make a terrible example. I fix everyone else's vehicles and forget the basics on my own, lol.

Yeah, aluminum.

 

My OE wheels are 18", & my summer wheels  are 20"  ... and neither match this 17" spare.  

 

There would've been nothing left of it if it were steel, LOL. :lol:

Took my ole girl for a country drive today. It had been at least to months since she had been on the road due to snow and salt here in Ontarible. So with it being sunny and 8 degrees for the last few days, I was able to get her out to stretch her legs. Still the most reliable truck (in fairness, I haven't had the 2017 long enough to say otherwise, but it hasn't let me down either) I've ever owned, sat for two months and fired right up.

Hang on to that gem, Steve! That's a nice one! Wish I still had my '94.

 

Last of GM's solid trucks - was all downhill from there. I got 222k miles out of my OE u-joints, and NEVER changed the ball joints and hub bearings when I sold it at 266k to buy my '07 - keep in mind, this is MA, where craters in major highways, and getting a foot of air off of bridge expansion joints are just part of life. The '07 ate the lowers in 38k, and the uppers & hub bearings by 50k - BIG difference. My '07 rides, and handles better, and has way more top end power, but sometimes I wonder if all that was worth the trade off. No BCM to control ANYTHING in that '94's interior, either.

I paid $900 for the 91 about 3 years ago now, I'll never get rid of it. It cost's me nothing to keep it around. I've even toyed with the idea of selling the Duster and putting some money into the 91. It'll be 30 years old in 2021 and it'll have new paint (factory) on it for that occasion, may even have a new power plant (the 5.0 is... well underwhelming).

Nice - can't beat that! Some people are paying that MONTHLY on these new trucks .... :uhoh:

 

Don't know what the previous owner did to mine, but it was a rocket ship out of the hole. Just enough power to launch hard, but barely squeal the tires. I beat alot of newer vehicles at the "stoplight drag-race" on my commute home every night by quite a distance. Once at 4k rpms, the party was over, though. On a 2-lane highway, I'd eventually get smoked - but on the lane-drop single-lane roads, I'd always end up in the lead.

 

It made my '07 seem like there was something wrong with it. I actually took it back to the dealer just a couple weeks after I first got it - they let me drive a couple trucks with the same engine to compare - same gutless off-the-line power. Hate that about the LS - miss that low-end grunt. My '72 El Camino was the exact same way - all low-end, signing off at 4,500.  If only I could have the best of both worlds without getting 12mpg ...

The gutless off the line you speak of is most definitely the torque management. Get a tune, totally different. There is a reason SO many choose the LS series motors for swaps and It for sure isn’t because they are gutless off the line.

A tune is the last thing on my mind. I'll be lucky if this engine makes it much over 100k miles. Saving for a crate.

Put an alternator in my uncles 2008 Sierra yesterday. Still all original under the hood, aside from the battery and now the alternator. Not bad for a 5.3 with 385k kms on it.

Changed the transmission oil and filter along with a small flush.   Magnet had a bunch of grayish muck attached to it hope that's normal.  Love having headers.   I was able to remove the whole pan with no problems. Just unbolted the y-pipe.

Shouldn't have to remove Y pipe. Its tight, but the pan will side past. BTDT.

 

Gray muck is grease - gives the particles something to stay put on, helping the magnet do it's job.

No kidding!

 

I bought a 1994 new in Dec '13.  Kept that truck and drove it daily (and worked it hard!) until 2015.  I was thinking of getting rid of it but my then-16-year-old decided he wanted it.  I gave it to him and he still drives it every day.  The dash looks just like yours, almost the same aftermarket stereo (but I painted the Metra dash adapter gray and replaced the stock radio controls with the pocket they make).

 

It only has 160,000 on it but like I said he still drives it every day.  I just hope my 2015 holds up as long!

I have 2 vehicle regrets (ones that I sold). My first vehicle was a 1969 C10 Stepside. Started life with an inline 6 and three on the tree. Eventually went to a 5.7L crate motor with a 4 in the floor. That quadrajet with a 10" K&N on top use to Scream! Sold it....Then I got a 1996 extended cab S-10 Zr2. Lifted with Centerline Hellcats and 33s. Won 1st Place in class at the Hunter's Auto Expo. Sold it...Bought a HD F150 (03 Anniversary). It was fun, but hardly a replacement for the Chevys. After an 03 Avalanche (minus body cladding), I'm back in a Chevy and loving it. Wish I would've found a V8, but this one was a deal that I couldn't pass and it had every other option that I wanted.

    • I know; crap pictures.   Anyway, as a finale of sorts to this thread, I had replaced both differential covers and since they had the capability of adding temperature probes, I did that. These are MaxTow analog/digital gauges with stepper motors. They'll flutter around like crazy for a moment and start at a nominal 100 degrees Fahrenheit.   I drove a 30-mile loop to the grocery store, averaging 70 MPH (as much as 80 to see if there was a quick spike in temperature. The air temperature is 102 (ambient ?). but the first pic is 7 miles into the trip. The second is getting back into the truck after leaving the store; differential temperatures dropped about three to four degrees in 15 minutes. The third pic in on the road to my house, about a mile away.   In that run, I saw a high of 150F on the rear differential, and 121F on the front. I'm sure a longer drive or towing will see higher than that, and when that happens, I can update the observations. 
    • You don't want to become predictable now, do you? 😏
    • Fully warm, coolant temp >194, closed loop.   Run time can be anywhere from just reached operating temperature to having driven 30+ miles.   The O2 chart (which is a feature I just discovered after reading) for the bad idle seems to be "most" of the time. For the little time I've been watching it (scanning and driving! watchout!) I can't seem to isolate any cause or condition yet.   It definitely idles rougher sometimes than others and so far what I've seen is the rougher idles are always rich. But not enough to set a CEL.   In other news I replaced the starter solenoid. Everything on this truck is such a PITA. Starter "snout" is mangled up with the torque converter inspection cover which is tangled up with hard cooling lines and the driveshaft. But I got 'er done without too much swearing...I just go into everything now knowing it's going to be a frustrating mess.   The starter solenoid replacement kicks off the next round of work: AC, injector rebuild, cat, exhaust. I'm just going to do it all. But first:   I don't know what my fuel pressures are. I can't definitively say the issue is the injector without first verifying fuel pressures and any leakdown. I "rented" a test kit ($199.99 at O'Really's ...intentional misspelling). They don't "rent" tools anymore, they charge you for the tool and then you return it when you're done. No joke. It is listed as a rental on the receipt but the guy told me there's no difference between renting and buying  now, you just return it when you're done and they refund the credit card. Mmmkay, whatever.   I will rule out fuel pressure issues (too much), and any leaking (that's how I'll know the problem is inside the intake). I think someone said the return line could be plugged or not flowing and that could cause high fuel pressure (and too much fuel being pushed through injectors). I'll cross that bridge if I get high readings.   As of now I'm ready to tear off the intake cover, extract the injector, and have it sent off to be rebuilt just so I can rule that out.
    • What are the conditions of this rich idle? Warm or cold engine? Run time? Does every idle look like this or only sometimes?
