2012 3500HD Shaking at Highway Speeds

Hi. My 2012 Silverado 3500HD (see signature for truck info) has a really annoying shake at highway speeds. Very similar to other posts I have read on various forums. It started right off the dealer lot with 6 miles on the odometer back in October 2011. I factory ordered the truck so it didn't sit on a lot so this rules out flat spots in tires. At 500 miles, I brought it back to dealer where they verified the shaking and said the tires were out of round and replaced all 4 with new. This helped but did not solve the problem. The dealer resigned to the fact that they could not figure it out. I then took to dealer #2, where they kept it for 1 week, replaced 3 out of 4 tires, road force balanced the tires, then drove it with an ultrasonic device in the truck (per GM spec) and determined that the left rear tire was louder than should be. They then told me that GM needed to manufacture a special adapter for the Hunter tire balance machine to fit the 18" Silverado aluminum rims. They said it would be several months before this adapter would be made and they would call me when it came in. Sceptical of what they were saying and with the shaking still present, I took it to dealer #3. Dealer #3 told me that dealer #2 was blowing smoke up my #%# and that they would fix my problem. They tried rebalancing the tires 3 times and still no change. I forgot to mention, dealer #2 supposedly rebalanced the drive shaft.

The shaking is experienced at 65 to 75 mph and varies depending on road surface. It is felt mostly on smooth asphalt surfaces. I feel it in the seat, not in the steering wheel. I can watch the passengers seat basically wobble. I am hoping someone can chime in with ideas. If GM customer service reads this, please contact me

Did they check the rims for being true? Might have a rim or rims out of wack (bent) or you might try and take the star washers off the studs that hold the rotor against the hub and remount the wheels as they might not be sitting flush against the rotor, the star washers are not needed. See if the dealer will take a set of rims and tires off another truck and mount to yours and see if its still there. Worth a shot.

Dealer #3 told me that their balance machine would have caught an out of round rim. We switched from front to back a few times, so if the problem was a rim, I would have felt it in the steering wheel at some time or point. I have a hunch it could be the torque converter, or an axle hub issue. What is frustrating is that the 3 dealers I went to have very little expertise with HD trucks. For They can talk all day long about 1500's, but HD is another animal. I thought it would be good to drive another 3500HD crew gasser, but no dealer I've visited has one. Only diesels.

hubs wouldve blown up by now ,,,dont guess and tell what to do,,

A Rochesterian? Small world! If you don't mind my asking, which dealers have you been to?

 

There is a GM bulletin on balacing the new wheels due to the new center bore and the bulletin states that the balancer should already have the correct truck adapter. Heck, the dealer I work at doesn't have a road force and we had a tech balance a set of the polished 18's no problem (changed the outside weights for stick ons due to customer preference of looks).

 

Do you feel the vibration in the steering wheel at all? Another thought could be frame beaming, which GM calls a characteristic of the vehicle but can be helped by re-designed body mounts. The bulletin on it at the moment covers 99-2011, not 2012 however.

 

Also, what tire pressures do you run in it?

Newdude: Bought at Doyle, Ideal was dealer #2, O'Conner was dealer #3. I may have been the one that didn't want weights on the outside. It is a a small world. So should I look into this bulletin?

O'Conner says that my tires are now balanced within GM spec. Still shakes though.

The weights on the outside fella had a 2500hd lol. Don't blame anyone for not wanting them on the outside on a nice wheel like that though.

 

I would say if you can get a dealer to look into that for them at all, give it a shot. See if any dealer has changed them ever for an issue like that.

So far I have gotten that same look from the dealerships I have been to when they couldn't find the cause and resolve my problem.

I have a '12 3500 HD 4X4 RCLB. No vibration problems at all. My truck is a WT, and it has 18" steel wheels.

I also have a 2012 gmc 2500hd with a shake at highway speed. Been through the tire thing. Its not tires. When i checked over the truck i found my rear hubs had more play then normal. Possible hub issue. Has anyone else tried replacing rear hubs

ya dont replace the hubs ....just the bearings and cups inside IF they are done ,,
