oil change????

Recommended Posts

the dealer said to bring the new truck in for an oil change when the DIC says 20%. can i go longer?? i'd like to run it right down and maybe keep going. i don't think the truck will explode after 5000 miles without an oil change. my last truck ran great and i extended the oil changes all the time.

Your going to get 2 answers to this. Some people will say go by old standard 5000km (3000miles) or go until the monitor is close to done. Either way the only real way to know how long your oil lasts is to take an oil sample after a change and then you can be the judge of how accurate the OLM is. Lots of info there.

Personally I go 10,000kms on synthetic oil and rotate my tires at the same time, I do it myself though.

i just got it, it has around 500 miles on it. the guy said theres no break in period. he wanted me to come back every time at 20%. if the new oils last 5000 miles and i could get 5000 miles out of the old oils, how far can i go with the new oils?? i used to do my old truck at 5000 miles with a cheap oil and it ran great 163K miles on it. i should be able to do more than 5000 miles on a good oil. i don't want to be in getting a $60 oil change every 2 months.i'd do it myself but theres no where to bring the oil.

Good info!

Most places like Walmart auto centers, Advance Auto, Auto Zone, O'Riley's will take used oil and filters. That is where I take mine. Also your quick lubes like Jiffy Lube will take your use oil and filters. The newer places use the oil to heat their building so the more they get the better now that winter is coming up.

When my DIC gets down below 10% is when I gather my oil-changing gear and change it the next weekend...to me 20% still has lots of life left in it.

Only driving about 15000 km per year I change it when I do my winter/summer tire swap as it is on the hoist already. I use Mobile ! extended life so its every six months for me. No need to change it more frequently and usually my OLM is still in the 25-30% life left range.

I change the oil in my truck whenever the DIC indicates it is at 10% oil life remaining. I am usually anywhere from 7000-7500 miles on the oil at that point. I use Mobil 1 oil and Wix filters.

maybe i'll do it myself. if i can find a place to take the oil, i'm gonna do it myself. if i go right down to zero%, will that void the warranty?? who knows the truck may shut off the way these things are built. theres a light and buzzer for everything.

I change mine every 5000km regardless, but then again I use my truck for work and at 5k it needs it,I use mobil 1 full synthetic,I change it myself and it only costs about $40,then I take the used oil to a shop down the road that burns the oil for heat.

Why don't you just simply reset the Olm and go longer with a quality oil.

what do you put the oil in? I haven't changed my own oil in years. Do i have to have jugs for the oil just sitting around?? do you fill the oil containers you just used?? just wondering the easiest way to bring the oil to the store. i'm sure if i use mobil 1 i can go more than 5000 miles. i was going 5000 miles on kmart oil and it ran great. i'll just resetting the meter.
