H D Truck Pull..

I was wathching some truck pulling on you tube, and man the ammount of trucks that broke front end parts when they first started taking off was

amazing, So im wondering if anyone makes heavy duty 'tie rods' ball joints' ETC... Im not making a sport out of it..but after all the work i did especially the raylar cam and justins tuning, Id like to see what it can do.. But im driving it to wherever the pull is and want to drive it home also.. I know things break no matter what. But if im going to replace some parts id like to get the best available..

Also what cause shit to snap or break.. Is it just the strain on the front wheel/wheels trying to grab?

Ive never done a truck pull so i dont know what the best tricks are or what to expect, I would imagine be in 1st gear in 4lo..

If you guys have any stories or pics please let me know.

I'd say 4 low would be too low. You need to be in the highest gear that you can sit on the rev limiter of basically. There are tons of places that make heavy duty front end components. Most diesel pullers will get upgraded tie-rods or braces for the factory ones at a bare minimum and lots of them have idler and pitman arm braces. Thanks.. So you think 4hi and in D will work? Im sure the allison will do what it needs to. I just didnt want to waist time with it searching for a gear to be in,

Sorry, meant to say 4 Lo 1st gear. I am used to hearing the diesel guys pulling in third. I'd guess that means you would spend at least some of the track in 2nd. I'd say one or two pulls and you would have that figured out though.

Use 4 LO for sure. Get tie rod sleeves. Lower the torsion bars down in the front, so that the nose won't get too high when you're pulling. Block the rear suspension. Take off easy to avoid wheel hop. When you get past the 25' mark, let the big dog eat and don't let off until you stop moving...unless it starts bucking like crazy...that's hard on stuff. And post a video! :thumbs:

Ha you guys are funny,, So it seems the front end gets the most abuse,

@-the rod.. you seem like you have expierience in this..I figured id be into 100% the whole time to get the farthest possible..

whats the average trucks pulling length.. And do the diesels always do the best because of there tq or are there other variables to it?

like weight,wheelbase,etc...

I remember a freind of mine went to the pull at a local fair here and said a 6.0 truck beat an 8.1 and an lb7 dmax truck...

 

Also im not trying to make a hobby of this!! I just watched some videos and always wanted to try it to see what the truck could do..

What do you mean by 'block the rear' and were would i find tie rod straps?

I have seen gas trucks do well, alot of it seems to be who can get a good bite the soonest. The faster you get the sled moving the longer ya have till it stops

Yea thats what i figured, so on one hand you,d think you would want to be into it 100% from the start to really get it going, but then if you hammer it at the start things might break and/or loss of traction..

I' ve seen many gas trucks do well at pulls- I think it's more about weight and traction. Any truck can break the tires loose on dirt, heck even pavement- just make sure you are in the right gear and don't try to shift gears while pulling!

its all about loading the truck slow, before giving it 100% or ya break stuff

I also noticed guys with weight/s on the front end... I would imagine this helps the front end front being so loose and flopping around, causing stuff to break??

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
