My wife had a blast yesterday saying I told you so. When she got the Intagra Type R in 2001 my brother and I laughed at her. We of course always messed with muscle cars. It was a special order that took a year to get. She daily hers for two years until a police officer informed her that these were high on the theft list. A pristine hardly driven example went on BAT for over 150K. Hers has 30K miles on it.

I raced against those in IMSA and they kicked our asses.

Went to fire her up on Monday. Nothing happened. I had an idea what it was. It happens with all vehicles that are 15-20 years old. Plastic and rubber deteriorate no matter what. The button on the clutch that hits the neutral safety switch. The clue was it was on the floor. The whole clutch assembly needs to come out to get to it. It was hard enough for me just to unscrew the switch. As Derick would say I did the right thing. I glued the switch on. Temporary fix. Wife wants everything documented from the dealer when fix or service. If it was my daily. It would stay the way it is.

Well, went out for our Saturday night dinner. Yeah we go early to beat the crowds. My hearing deficit is higher decibels. I heard a sound high pitch. I asked my brother in law. Yup heard it. Then gone. Great a week away from a trip to my favorite casino. A seven hour drive. Nothing on the trip home. Need to take two vehicles to church. A meeting after. NASCAR I’m going home. Start the Ridgeline it’s back. Open the hood it the alternator and it’s warm. Odyssey to church. That’s all it takes for me to lose confidence in a ride. Juvenile I know. So I get home squirt a little oil behind the pulley noise gone. Well that will work for in town duty for now. Odyssey will resume trip duty. The truck owes me months before I put more money in it. The Odyssey is money in the bank, owes me nothing. That’s how my mind works with this used junk. And why I have a couple of vehicles. After the first of the year the Ridgeline hauls me around town with no issues. New alternator. It’s going to time out on a water pump and timing belt before it miles out. It has to give me some time or next!

Visit my mother today. My brother usually joins us living close to my mother. Knowing his daughter has a 2012 Honda Pilot similar to my Ridgeline. I asked if he ever changed the alternator. He said he did and he’ll never worked anywhere near the engine compartment again. This guy loves to work on anything. He has all my old lawnmowers. He bought a spare car just so if the Honda breaks he can take the Honda to his mechanic. And she has something to drive. She has since bought another car. He’s selling the pilot. Keeping the spare. So far the oil behind the pulley trick is working. Far now the Ridgeline in town. Odyssey for trips. A starter change will be in the cards for the odyssey shortly. I’m going to get through December to remember first. Something may peek my interest.

So the Ridgeline. This morning the alternator light came on with the bearing noise. 15 years 168K miles. After reading countless articles including the Honda enthusiasts sites. (Yes there’re some) Going with original equipment is the way to go. Unless I run across a killer deal the Ridgeline is a keeper. Install with a belt at Honda just under 1500$. I haven’t had an alternator fail since the seventies. Merry Christmas to me!

The repair was actually a little less than the quote. This dealer has plate windows with a counter where you can watch. They did an inspection like when you get an oil change. The last time the mechanic said my water pump was seeping and recommended a timing belt kit as well. I never saw this mechanic before and said I’ll keep an eye on it. It’s the first time in 22 years of using them I felt skeptical. Turns out he was wrong and I advised them to keep an eye on him. He’s gone now. With the Ridgeline in the air tires suspended some cracks appear in the bushings. My brakes show a 4, replacement is advised at 2. A small wetness around the oil pan but no actual leak. At 168K it’s wearing out. No kidding. The way I drive and what I use it for I will reach 200K in about 21/2 years. I have about 9K in it. I’m 2 months from my first year. I’m still under water compared to a reasonable mid sized CPO SUV or mid sized P/u. IF I was making payments. If I had sold the Avalanche I would be ahead of the game. Up until 2017 I bought new every two years. I got time to burn this is a game to me. My comfort level hasn’t changed driving old stuff. My kids are happy they get some of my castoffs. My cost are about the same and I have more vehicles to play with. If I wanted I could drive a Camry, Mazda 3, CRV, Elantra GT and my Avalanche. Along with our Genesis, Odyssey, and Acura. I’ve made my kids pay me a token. They all want to Ridgeline. That one will probably be used up by 200K. With all the maintenance it will need. It will far exceed its worth. Full beater status. Except for a shade tree mechanic. With the vehicles mentioned when I decide to get a new or CPO I’m currently favoring the Odyssey. I can’t believe it ether. It took a few months of driving one to get over the stigma. SOCCER MOM, that’s ok it’s actually fun.

Sold the Cruze diesel and got a 2022 JLU diesel. Here is a few pictures from Myrtle Beach Jeep Jam. All stock for now. Got a Clayton 2.5" lift over Black Friday, just waiting for warmer weather to install it.  Already changed over all the fluids to AMSOIL.  Put a PPE aluminum transmission pan on it.  Got it used with 41k on it. Getting 22.5mpg around town and 27.9 on my trip back from the Western NC mountains this summer, went to Maggy Valley Jeep Jam in June.  Looking at going to 37" tires after these BFG All Terrain KO3's wear out. Dealer installed them when I bought it since the tires that were on it were shot.

Damn. I’m always looking. I would have bought this truck. 5.3, 6 speed automatic, bed cover and right at 100K miles. Just under 10k. Nice truck. Cylinder Deactivation. Pass. It’s not that I like the Ridgeline better. Hardly. The odds are 100k or more trouble free miles. The GM truck. Not so much. Damn shame.

120k on a 16 year old pickup that's been used for work. What could possibly go wrong? Cylinder deactivation would be the least of my worries.

My work involved driving on pipelines and utility transmission lines. That would be a little worse than dirt roads, sometimes much worse. Not just mine but our fleet. They would be loaded with tools, fuel tanks whatever was needed. Some had goose neck hook ups for pulling trailers and campers. Some had utility bodies for over the road repairs. The trucks sometimes get passed around depending on the job. When I was done with my truck it went to a crew. Because of travel to get to the worksite high mileage was normal. The work abuses of travel off roading and all day running didn’t affect longevity. The quest for fuel mileage like cylinder deactivation and emissions on diesel engines. Does way more in reducing the life of modern vehicles than anything job related.

120k on that 6-speed auto would be my biggest worry. And the usual fate of most GM trucks falling apart around an engine/transmission. Has it been used for towing, and has it been maintained.

But sure, cylinder deactivation is the downfall of all GM trucks, every last one of them, and none of them will ever last 200k </sarcasm>. If the lifters haven't failed in 120k I think it's winning the bet. 80k to go.

Light duty pickups aren't 400k vehicles. They can be, but that's not the nature of a light duty.
