I park my truck at one of my clients and know that there are squirrels running around the parking lot and in the bushes.

Today I saw one climbing around a customers vehicle and told someone, "Look how cute."

Well, the person ran out and scared them all away and said his mechanic told him they have been putting nuts in his engine compartment and chewing on wires.

So I go and open the hood on my Silverado.

Sure enough there are little feet prints all over the top of the engine and they have been eating the foam that goes between the air cleaner and the inside fender.

They are not so cute anymore. :M16:

Hope there isn't too much damage to my truck.

I would bring some poison, but they have a security dog that roams the property at night, and I don't want to hurt the dog.....that would be bad.

Any ideas?

Try using the wax setting at a car wash under the hood, we tried it on a couple trucks and it seemed to work for rats. They don't like the taste apparently. On my old truck I sprayed Raid bug killer under the hood a little and that seemed to deter them as well.

Wow I wonder what kinda fumes that put off in your cab when the engine got hot.

I never noticed any. People using the car wash wax is pretty common. The Raid is something I tried because it was an old truck and I didn't want to break something under the hood with high pressure.

best thing i have found is dog hair. if you know someone with a long haired dog, brush the dog good and collect the hair, then stuff it around in places that it will not blow out..squirrels hate the smell of a dog. we have also used it around our house where they were getting into the attac..

good luck

Ide say put out a live trap. Smear some peanut butter on a near of corn, and throw it in there. Then when you catch a few, put em in a pot of dumlin's, or BBQ em. MMMMMMMMMMMM, Good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you know that the old green coolent is also very bad for them and dogs too(so be careful). So a possible way to get "rid' of the little guys to to soak a little sponge in the green coolent, place it in the engine bay, and once they eat/chew the sponge they wont return. That or Hot sauce. I have seen guys "spray" a bottle of Hot sauce around their engine bay, making sure to stay away from the A/C air inlet area and that seemed to keep them away. good luck.

Looking at my truck for damage, I find there is some foam that is glued between the air cleaner and the fender. They have eaten a hole in the foam.

Will that cause a problem?

I think that will just allow hot engine bay air into you air intake vs cooler "outside" air.

A few days ago Ibsaw a squirrel climb under the hood of a durango. Turns out another was already there. Ended up being a squirrel fight in the engine compartment. Kinda funny to watch. ONe dropped out and took off.

I am told that fabric softener sheets (dryer sheets) will most times help to deter mice and rabbits.. it might work on squirrls.
