If I could ask?.....what did they give you on your trade?

Dealerships dont use Kelly Blue Book. KBB gives a much higher value than Black Book which alot of Dealerships refer to.

I got ripped on the new truck....my fault, wasn't paying attention to the numbers. We started at $750 below MSRP on the '13.....I thought I had supplier discount, and found out I didn't get it till the papers were signed, and I looked at the numbers at home. I believe there was $4,500 in incentives, and they gave me $10,500 for my truck with a bad wheel bearing, and 93,000 miles on the clock.....it was nicely equiped, and only minor dings here and there.........if I was awake while cutting the deal, I would have asked for another couple of grand at the very least from one end or the other, or walked

I don't know. I still don't get it or see it. I must have an amazing lucky streak with buying GM trucks. Granted I did not keep the last two very long, but hey I was offered a heckuva trade-in deal on them too. The first two I owned I had a looong time. Total of 5 owned now.

I've gotten snow, ice, mud, cow sh*, etc on the parking assist sensors. The over ride or what ever it is called worked OK on my 11' and 13'. Works just like the OM says it does.

The camera does get blocked but I have only ever had it get blocked by snow, ice, and rain. I use the mirrors more anyway. I only use the camera to check for kids and calves. I do not know why I have not the trouble with dust on two different GM trucks? Drive regularly on gravel to semi-packed clay. Gets packed and falls off?

I've hauled wood and steel fence posts, firewood, etc. Level to bottom of cab at least, usually mounded much higher (depending on weight of course) and strapped down. No problems.

So grocery getter or kid hauler here? No. Full time farm vehicle? No. Done a fair amount of hard 'dirty' work. Yes.

Complaints: 0. Expect to put 140,000+ on this one like the first three GM trucks I owned long term.

I've been lucky as well with my last three half tons, heck I even had an F250 for two years before my current truck that never gave me any trouble. I'd definitely be upset though if I had one that shakes, rattles, vibrates, etc... Fortunately this hasn't happened to me YET, and hope it doesn't anytime soon.

I can understand old Cow's frustration. It's not just GM of course, I think they are all high tech, hard to work on now days. I like it both ways - leather seats, but basic stuff! Heheheheheheeee, spoiled in a heap of ways. But, main thing to me is just me trucks keep going with good reliability. Some are able to do that, some can't, in all makes. Cain't do without me truck!

I also think this is a silly rant. :nonod:

Heck, if the OP has so much cash (seems to brag), keep the new "loaded out" 2013 1/2 ton for the wifey, buy a 2013-14 3/4 ton, AND a 2013-2014 1 ton for the REAL work. When the added towing & hauling payload comes into the SAFETY equation!!

ALL the manufactures keeping designing these vehicles so people can't work on them easily- They want their dealers service dept to make the extra cash!! Whether it be adding more and more plastic shields to access parts of the motor, or adding more moduels/sensors to control things. Heck, all the added interior & exterior plastic trim & aluminum chassis parts are a result of OUR governmemnt demanding MORE MPG out of these vehicles. The best way to do this is less weight!! :nopity:

I do miss the days when rough idle meant filter replacement or maybe a carb tweak.

Somewhere I read this: "A real truck is one you can hose down. INSIDE & OUTSIDE." Lotta truth to that....IMO.

All I can say is this: Listen to a Car Talk archive from 1992 or so and people are calling in with major troubles with 5 year old cars. I mean, like major stalling/leaving stranded issues. Today's vehicles are barely broken in at 5 years old. I'll take today's thanks.

Boy, you guys are something. I did mention that the pickup was for the "wifey". Seems remedial reading class is in order. I also stated about how I did not like the AFM on the engine. I didn't order it. I didn't have a choice in the matter. And I had to spend money to make sure it doesn't do the AFM thing. So it wasn't just about that stupid camera or parking assist sensors. Now it is true the "wifey's" truck will be called upon occasionally to do work, but it is not the primary work vehicle. Something that you missed in my postings.

And yes, I did use my money to buy what I needed to do "real" work. And I could avoid a lot of stuff that was not wanted and get a lot of what I did want. But, of course, it is a class 8 truck. Kind of a cool thing. I ordered and bought a 2013 Freightliner, complete with a pre-egr factory rebuilt engine. New truck with NO emissions crap on the engine. No foul with the EPA either and I got to avoid the Federal Excise Tax on new equipment by getting the truck and putting in a rebuilt engine and rebuilt transmission. 550 Hp, 1850 lb torque, 12.7L Detroit turning an 18 speed, twin screws with full lockers, and getting 30% better fuel mileage than the trucking industry average. Custom interior with woodgrain everywhere, more gauges than the space shuttle (well, almost), and more sleeper storage cabinets than in my kitchen at home (again, almost), and a built in refrigerator/freezer. Ported/polished/coated exhaust manifold with a Borg Warner 171702 turbo with a blanket complete with twin stacks with Walker Megaflows on them. If I chose to do so, it would be running 100 mph in the top gear at only 1600 RPM, and I saved $40,000 over the cost of a comparable new production truck with all the emission junk on it. So you can have your 1 ton pickup for "real" work. I'll take my truck that can haul 48,000 lb in the box, legally. Then we can talk about "real" work. I don't use 1 ton toys for real work. The government doesn't have the first clue how to make a vehicle get good mpg. Even in commercial trucking they are mandating 20% better fuel mileage by 2020. I am already beating those standards with plenty of room to spare. I got the technology I wanted and kept off that which I didn't. And I didn't have an OEM dictating to me what they thought best for me. I had a choice on every single component right down to the brand of wheel seals in the axles. 20 pages of spec sheets.

It is probably because of the ability to spec out a custom class 8 truck the way a truck should be spec'd that I am somewhat dissatisfied with the Silverado. And that probably is no one's fault but my own. Either way, it does not excuse GM for making some rather glaring goofs in how they did things. We all have to eat some of the stuff that comes out of the factory, but there is no excuse for a poor design.

I could say the same thing about the '07 Sierra I just traded in on my '13 Silverado. The list of issues I had with that truck was 2 miles long, and all related to piss poor quality foreign-sourced parts. And you'll find that with ANY manufacturer. I think we can all agree that we could walk up to a Ford/Dodge/Toyota/Whatever, and point out all the issues and flaws for that particular brand.

Yep. Just because I have chewed on GM, does in no way mean that the other OEM's are off the hook. There are just some things, though different from brand to brand, that OEM's will do to vehicles that make no sense, are standard features, and have a tendency to hinder more than help. All one can hope for is that the they don't get broadsided by too many negative features.

Just got the Park Assist sensors disabled permanently. Did not want to play shut off games every time I started the vehicle. And with a hitch ball in the receiver or the tailgate down for work reasons, this was a constant headache. So, just pulled the fuse, disconnected the battery for a few minutes, and voila! No park assist anymore! Yet another work around for the stuff that GM thru on my vehicle that sounds better in a brochure than it works in the real world. Just don't stand behind me when I am backing!

Let's see.... that makes over riding the AFM, replacing the oil pan drain plug with a Fumoto drain valve, putting an oil catch can in the PCV line, putting on an air filter gauge, and now disabling the park assist in the short month and a half I have owned the pickup. One thing about getting a new vehicle, it sure keeps you busy for a while changing or fixing stuff that the OEM seemed to drop the ball on.

    • Late reply, but yes—it works on the SLT trim. Compatibility comes down to the plastic shroud shape behind your mirror, not the trim badge itself. On the SLT with auto-dimming, it uses a plug-and-play Y-harness off the mirror/rain sensor power, so no need to run wires down to the OBD port. If anyone's ever unsure about fitment, just drop a photo of your mirror housing and we can double-check it.   Appreciate the detailed feedback on the install! On the windshield glare—we actually took feedback like yours and developed a dedicated CPL (polarizer) filter to cut down dash reflections on sunny days. If you're still running the cam, shoot me a DM. I'd be happy to send a CPL filter over for you to test out—no charge.
    • There are no stickers in your glovebox?
    • Look at the numbers on the stickers in the door jam...
    • Yes, every time the developer updates his code, you must recompile. I will private message you with the latest because it changes pretty much with every version.
    • After I wrote that reply I went for a ride. 85 F out. So trans started at 85 F and it shifted the same as it did an hour latter at 168 F. I've never actually recorded the to cold to shift point but it is under 32 F before they start hanging on to a lower gear or leaving the converter unlocked. Both intended to heat fluid.    Yes, brake or bake. Absolutely.      Your welcome. True research ended decades ago. Field trials are still in play.    There is a thing called oxidation onset temperature. This is the heat related oxidation not the O2 exposure kind. For mineral oil that starts at 140 F. So what happens after 140 F? Each 20 F cuts fluid life in half! Does using a Full Synthetic improve that? Yes! By how much? Depends on the base oil type and a few other factors. But enough to notice. Some esters are even higher. There are even synergies between types the will raise it higher than any one component is alone.    Then there is "Hindered" oils. Antioxidant additives. Hindered Polyol Esters can sit at 500 F for years in a turbine.   When a blender brags his oil will 'take 500 F" in service he doesn't specify for how long. Water will dance on a 500 F hot plate for several seconds. @newdude put up a chart showing the relationship between fluid temperature and it's life in an automatic transmission. Here's a version of that chart for Group III based oils. These temperatures are those in the pan as observed as 'normal'. that is you drive as you do for as long as you do under what load you ask of it and whatever that temperature is this graph applies to. Flash temperatures of a few minutes isn't what his means.    Note that fluids held at a constant 240 F have a service life of only 20K miles. 220 F explains the factory exchange limit, eh? My equipment I keep under 180 F and I'm good if the cooler will hold it as low as 140 F. But that's me.
