The camera is a standalone option, at least it was on mine. It is also an option that even if it gets filthy or damaged would have zero effect on any other aspect of driving or using the truck. And it can be turned off. As for the parking assist, you did something wrong. I've turned mine off and they stay off till the next key cycle. Congratulations on going caveman on the sensors, now you'll have a warning message every time you drive.

I probably posted the rant elsewhere, but have only continued with it here, so can't recall what other forum I made similar comments on. Doesn't matter. This discussion does have it's more interesting side, in that so many folks really need to take a remedial reading class. Especially the moderator. I never said I did take a punch and ball peen to the backup assist sensors, or "caveman" as it was put. I said I had given it some thought. But this is par. So many folks could not for the longest time get a grasp on what I was upset about with this ride. Seems the only thing they think there is about vehicle is the power and size. But then, to most folks, their pickup is not something they use as a part of their normal work day.

Oh well. Doesn't matter. I don't like the ride. Will unload it at the first opportunity and have no regrets doing so.

I have a 2013 as well, and am pretty disappointed in it. I'll also be dumping mine as soon as I can. First and last time I buy a brand new truck. I feel your pain. My issues revolve more around build quality though.

I always find these threads comical to say the least, the only complaint I can find from the OP is that he cannot turn off the rear park assist. :dunno: Sorry it didn't work out for you, and all the best looking for a truck that can do the "real" work you speak of.

My 2011 Z71 has been horrrible. All it has done is handle everything I have thrown at it for 75,000 miles. I regularly tow my 3000 lb boat 120 miles round trip during the summer, in South Louisiana 100 degree heat. I've towed 3 tons of lime a couple of times; total package with the grain buggy was around 8000 pounds. I've pulled a couple of stuck tractors out of some pretty nasty stuff. I've overoaded the bed with fertilizer and seed on multiple occassions. It gets worked pretty hard, and still rides great. If I could only get that park assist thingy to shut off. All this damn technology is ridiculous!

No truck is perfect including mine, but this one is tons better than the 2005 F150 I had prior to it.

There is nothing comical about buying something you think it isn't. I used to have that problem when I bought new junk...... then I learned. I mean really the OP didn't have to buy a loaded truck thus probably getting rid of most of his gripes..... I mean they still make w/t and LT trim levels. The rest of the rant about the sandbox is pretty useless, lol. I can say that stuff too but it really has zero relevance to my trucks..... My 05 gets "worked" pretty hard in comparison to the highway commuter..... but so what. I mean the 05 makes at least the purchase price of a new truck in profit every year... I can't complain, lol.

Yeah, the WT with a few extra features might have been better. I have the LT. It also has a few packages with it. To the "comical" point, if you read all the posts, I said all I really liked about it was the ride and the quiet. As far as doing anything work related, it all goes down hill. And it all has to do with the nonsense they put on these to make it nothing more than a car on steroids. Power not the issue or what it can do. It is all about the hassles associated with getting done what needs to be done. Some modern improvements are worth while and make thing better. Some have the opposite effect. This one is loaded with stuff that fits into the latter category. Unfortunately, every other manufacturer is eating the same crap sandwich. This purchase with actually a balance of what I needed, and what is being made. In other words, the lesser of all evils. Matter of fact, try as I may, there is not much of anything being made that trips my trigger. Seems anymore that it is a just trying to get what you need and keep the problems to a minimum

That is why when I ordered my 2013 semi last year, I ordered a glider. We put in a pre-emission factory rebuilt engine to avoid all the smog crap they are putting on diesels nowadays. Did a host of other things that made the truck extremely functional, easy to work on, and it beats the trucking average mpg by about 30%. I am also able to carry 2000 lb more than the company trucks that the carrier I am pulling for has. Saved over $40K on that purchase and got better durability, easier maintenance, better longevity, lower cost of operation, etc. And got to avoid the Federal Excise Tax. Now true, this is something you cannot do with a production pickup, but some things can be ported over. Give me exactly what I want and need down to the brand of wheel seals in the drive axles. Every little gauge and other helpful thing I want, without forcing me to take a "package" of junk I don't want. If I want custom item, do not force me to buy a complete package. If I want a specific diff gear ratio and engine combination, don't try to think you know more than I do about what I need. Just make it to my specs and sell it to me. I will worry if it the specs I choose are good or bad after putting it to work, and if it is bad, I only have myself to blame.

I did buy one already made, but it was model year close out, and I did have the dealer search around and find one that got me as close to what I really wanted and he brought it to the dealership. Problem was, not realizing all the major changes that have gone on the last few years, I realize the choices and the vehicle in general were not optimum. But then, as I stated, there really is not much being made now that really winds me up. I did mention the '98 I had. It seemed like a more solid functional truck. I actually like it. I knew this was going to be a bumpy ride in purchasing something new. Man, i wasn't ready for this letdown.

The only thing that I would miss if I had kept my 2005 over buying my current truck would be the 6.2 and 6spd transmission

Wow ... I was concerned that I had bought into a pile of headaches that has yet to rear their ugly heads.

Honestly, if a dirty back-up camera lense and beeping sensers causes you this much angst, you live a great and simple life sir.

I'm jealous. Happy trails!

I loved the fairly new 1991 Chevy I drove through high school and college. It was way better than my '05 '07 and the current '12. (only because of all the 'tang I picked up with it)

haha :lol::D:lol:

Keeping my 2006 as long as it runs. Then swapping a 6.0 and keeping it longer.

Lol never thought of that......my father inlaw retired from GM so im pretty much stuck w/that brand cuz of the discounts......

but now he wishes he would have kept his 06 gmc slt z-71......by far a better TRUCK then his '13

I did misread your post, no denying that but in my defense I'm working off like 2.5 hours of sleep.

I'd still like to know just what you find so awful about these trucks because surely it can't be a camera that has zero effect on how the rest of the truck operates or the easily disabled parking sensors. Cause so far all I see are a bunch of rants about technology and how it makes it hard to work with and not any actual complaints.

    • I can relate. 3 years ago I did that on my Avalanche. I was sore for a week. The only maintenance I do myself now is drop and fill on the transmission on my Honda’s. It’s just too easy. My yard work with my walks in the morning will be enough now I passed 70. The contributing factor is the heat in Texas. You just have to pace yourself.
    • I am sorry if this was misleading. That was a document attached to our most recent work order number (Doc# 7105804) that summarized all the current updates. These programs were ‘redone’ in the past but these versions dated 4/1/2016 were the ones that actually made all of the problems disappear. These programs were relayed to the dealer from the technical services group at GM. Here is the exact wording on the last work order:   “Front view camera reprogramming with SPS. A new version of FCM software was released to the service dept. In addition to providing general robustness and stability enhancements, this update includes all enhancements from previous software version releases. SPS camera and calibrate camera. OLH to perform extended camera relearn procedure after camera calibration. Would not take with first GDS learn. Front camera SPS – BDYZ333157450 GDS2 – camera road calibration performed 2810835 Front view camera reprogramming with SPS LT 0.6 OLH – extended camera relearn procedure OLH LT 1.5”   I got the truck back on 4/8 – since that time it has been great no problems whatsoever. The lane keep assist, active cruise control and AEB all work very well around town and at highway speeds up to 80mph. During this time I had been away for a week and purposely let the battery sit without a batter tender. Even with the battery a bit lower there were no problems exhibited. I really think this one has it fixed after dealing with these issues over a couple of years. These new programs and relearn process when completed seem to make all the parts (and newer replacement parts) ‘talk’ to each other without any glitches. Hope this helps
    • I turned 72 today. My day began with a trip to the pharmacy to pickup meds for me and the dog and then a stop at my chiropractor before heading home. Once home I started the job of replacing the rear brake pads and one rotor on our 2018 Silverado which will probably end up taking me 3 days to finish, gotta pace myself you know. Sometimes I question myself on why I still do most of my own repairs but if I wasn't then it's more than likely I would be sitting in front of the TV all day. It seems like the list of things I need to do gets longer no matter what I accomplish. I'm not complaining but being retired was so much easier when I was 62.   Peace
    • google "bathub failure curve". Basically, any part of the vehicle can fail at any time.  It starts off as being more likely (early failure), then the failure rate goes down (but does not go to zero), then it goes up over time because it wears/ages out.
    • I went from every other day to about once in five since the rain abated. I'm not unhappy about that. Took most of the month for the ditches to dry enough to mow.
