Crawled around under a 2014 today

Local dealer had a 2014 Sierra out front on a rack so I hopped under and checked it out.

- Underneath the truck didn't look radically different than the 900s

- Frame is still waxed dipped like the 900s

- Oil pan on new engine looks very different almost small - cross member looks like it could conflict slightly with replacing oil filter

- Speaking of oil, this truck had leaking oil on the bottom of the engine (filter?)

- Heavy duty plastic guard up front seems stronger than the 900 guard

- Still using large aluminum rear driveshaft

- Underside of the truck was not painted, but covered in gray primer (it was a white truck)

- Chip resistant paint on the bottom of the rocker panels is very thick, almost seemed pliable when pushed with the fingernail

- Rear carpeted wheel well liners appear to be easily removed if needed

- Leaf springs are still being made in Mexico (stamped 'Made in Mexico')

- Truck had real polished 20" aluminum rims (not plastic covered rims)

- Paint on exterior of the truck seemed pretty good - not much orange peel

Interesting observations. I wonder if trucks made in Fort Wayne or Flint will still have Mexican made springs. I likely won't be looking at crew cabs so if I get a new one it'll come from there.

Ford does but not for the trucks. The half tons are made outside Detroit in Dearborn and the Super Dutys in Virginia I think.

Ford is probably the most "American" auto maker atm.

They use global parts sourcing like anyone else. Hell they put a China transmission in manual Mustangs.

Of course they are still using that nasty wax shit on the frames. Man i hate that stuff.
