I agree. Should be 3.42 standard and 3.73 opt.

Yep, special orders do upset us at GM . And not just GM. Tried to get a Honda coupe for the bride. Yep, we got silver but only black leather. Take it or get out of the way.

Based on todays gmc build site, want leather in SLE trim it will be black.

That sucks you cant get it with the Z71 suspension. You could on the GMT 900's.

NHT was not available on Z71 trucks on the 900s as far as I know. You could get a non-NHT 6.2 but that's it.

I have the 5.3 with 6sp trans 3.42 grs....also live in hilly area and it is always shifting if you can get the damn thing to downshift...I would option for the 3.73 but they do not offer with the 5.3.

Maybe the extra TQ will save the day for the '14 5.3, 3.42s.

The extra torque and better tranny programming is a savior for the 2014's. I have the 3.08 gears and it's perfect, not constantly hunting like the previous gen. In fact, the previous gen 5.3/6 speed combo is the reason I was driving a Ram even though I'm a GM guy. The extra torque in these motors is very noticeable.

You're not finding that the 3.08 makes the truck sluggish or have to change down frequently around town?

Next question does the 3.08 result in the engine staying in V8 more frequently?

No and no. It's better than my Ram was with 3.55's.

I wonder why the picker on the web site requires the 3.42 if you choose the 6.2 engine then??

No idea, all I know is with my driving habits and the little bit I tow, I wouldn't have my truck any other way. The new motor plus the six speed and 3.08's are perfect. If you tow a lot or plan on a lift and bigger tires, the 3.42's or 3.73's would be better.

Just a thought, they might figure gas mileage isn't very important to someone that chooses the 6.2, so the 3.42's are standard.

I'd assume that it's the reverse that they need the 3.42 in order to get the torque for it to stay in V4, but if the 5.3 has sufficient torque then I have no clue, I dont tow anything, but I do occassionally have equipment in the bed of the truck under the tonneau

I don't know, it's surprising how much this thing stays in V4 mode.

Hey Joe,

I'm going to be buying a 2014 gmc sierra 1500 in next month or so (before year end for sure) and was thinking that with 20" wheels the 3.42 rear axle ratio would be more "peppy" than the 3.08. I haven't been able to drive a 3.42 year, but would certainly think you'd notice the difference. Any thoughts?

I didn't know the web build tool had the option to add the 6.2 yet.

I drove both the 3.08 and 3.42 before I purchased my Silverado. Back to back, same road, a road I was familiar with. Under cruise control, neither of the trucks downshifted on the hills I was traveling on. My Avalanche with 3.42s shifted all the time on this same stretch of road. Both ratios would work well, but I noticed the 3.42 was peppier when you were accelerating from a stop and if you were going from 60-80mph. I went with the 3.42 because of that.

I got the 3.08 on my 2010, and it hunted all the time. I did not like the behavior. The mileage was not that much better than what I had seen in previous gens, and I have a light foot.

My wifes 11 Yukon felt much stronger and didn't hunt gears nearly as much.

A couple of times a year I tow hay trailers. I went with the 3.42s, and I know its not a direct comparison, but I like the way the 5.3/3.42 drives much better.
