Sandblasting axle shafts?

Recommended Posts

So finished up media blasting my rear end housing and primered it. Then I moved on to the axles to the inside of the hubs, but thenstarted spraying the inside splines (near where the C clip sits). My dad told me I could have damaged the splines doing that. They look fine, but I didn't get a really good look.

Could I possibly have damaged the splines? Do I have anything to worry about? Should I get new axle shafts when I order my gears and locker?

Also, I used Aluminum Oxide media, 70 grit, since I guess that could make a difference

Thanks

I would think it wouldn't mess up the spline. Just do t hit anything that bearing or seal sits on. We sand blast stuff at work all the time to clean it with out damage

I tried avoiding right where the bearing and seal ride, but media bouncing off the back of the hub may have hit it. Im hoping all will be good

I'll check em out when I get home from work. I just stuck the axles on the jack stands and went to town. Think I could have damaged where the bearing and seal rides?

I have to ask, why would you sand blast axle shafts? Little brake clean or carb cleaner and a rag would have been more than enough

The differential is completely stripped down and had the axles sitting in my garage. Figured I would blast and paint the rear of the hubs, guess not on these...

Should I just buy brand new axles, or should I get some from a junk yard? Its like 215 a piece (new) from Yukon, or about 75 used from a junkyard. Just dont want to purchase the used ones and they are no good...

If you didn't pit the surface where the bearing and seal ride you should be ok. Maybe take some very fine i.e. 1000 grit emery cloth and make sure they are smooth

I think I will just save these axles and purchase new ones from Dorman. Can get em for a little over 320 but comes with axle bearing, seal, and studs. Besides, I used these to hold the housing on jack stands so I could paint it. It was the only thing I could find strong enough to do the job haha

Yeah Im just gonna play it safe and get new ones. I do have pics but they are too big to upload. And Im not the most tech savvy guy out there so I don't know how to reduce the file size without distorting the picture
