Hi, I'm Jess.

I work in commercial truck repair shop and have a 99 GM Sierra (K2500)

I've been reading stuff on this forum, and it has helped me diagnose many issues.

I've hit a point now where I need to replace my engine. It's a 350 Vortec, and it's seized.

I've been getting quotes to re & re a crate, and they have so far varied from 18-21 hours.

I'm not sure what is reasonable for labour, I have no access to SRTS on that

I know many people think I'm crazy for wanting to put a new engine in such an old truck, but I've done a fair bit of upgrading on it, and I don't want to start over again. For example, I just put a brand new Gibson exhaust on it in July. I don't want to part it out and though I am mechanically inclined, I don't have the skill or finances to start over customizing a new one

I guess what I am looking for is an idea of the time it would take to put a crate in. Does 18-21 sound reasonable? Thank you in advance for taking the time to read my post :)

18 to 22 hours sounds a bit high. If a shop is doing it they are going to overcharge but if you have it done in a friends garage who has experience it can be much lower. For example my friend did his 78 Scottsdale in less than half a day. And this truck is lifted. 350 crate motor.

If I get it done by a licensed mechanic I get 3yr/160,000km warrenty on the engine.

If I get a friend to do it, I may not get that. I work with 5 mechanics, but the only one I would trust to do it isn't licenced.

I know the shop will mark it up, but the local guy in town here has already offered me a better quote than GM itself.

So I've decided to order in a new water pump and new intake manifold for the job to make it a little easier on the guy working on it, and I figure we might as well replace that while we are in the engine. I'm also planning on new distributer, spark plugs and wires... anything else I should get?

Thanks again!

Welcome.

You have done your homework. The hours sound about right. I say install it with some help and that way you know it was done right, no short cuts.

My 6.0 swap took about 2.5 days of labor at a shop. They were only open from 8-5
