What does that mean?

GM does not communicate with the dealers and/or mechanics?

They don't have courses or training on the new trucks?

That has to be a joke.

@mzodarg

It looks great!

i was told by my sales rep she went to MI for a week of training over the summer on all of GM's 2014 lines and a majority of it was centered on the Silverados.

As a hobby, I build custom Harley Davidson Bad@ss high performance motors. My local HD dealer is clueless when we talk performance. Sure their trained just like the GM mechanics, trained the company way. Nothing more.

Just saying....

I hate the Z71 Grille as much as you do and think the chrome honeycomb one looks WAY better. I wish I could find out how to get my hands on one. I like my new truck but would LOVE it if I could find a way to swap out the grille as you did. My dealer was not very helpful. Said the Z-71 LTZ's ALL have the black and the replacements or the snap in one's do not fit. If there is any way you could find out the Part # I'd REALLY appreciate it! Looks awesome!

I for 1 also don't like the Z71 grilles, they look cheap. The LT1/LZ1 grilles are much nicer than the LT2/LZ2 grilles are.

I've been through the GM training personally on the 2014's before they came out. I got to see them before there was so much as a spy photo on the internet of them about 2&1/2 years ago (that was a long process, had to sign off that I wouldn't share info, they confiscated my cell phone and any cameras) After training, there was still lots they didn't get into fine detail... they just can't go through everything.

Whether an emblem from 1 model will go onto another model has never been anything that GM or any dealer for that matter stays awake at night worrying about... so it's not a poor training thing.

Like mentioned before "to each his own" I like the z71 grill and didn't like the chrome one. I like the subdued look. Though I think certain colors of the truck look better with the chrome. For me a red truck with black accents looks badass.

I can totally understand someone liking the back X grille over the Chrome (particularly with a red truck). My new truck is Black LTZ/Z-71 and I personally just think the chrome grill would look way better - I should have prob held out and made it part of the deal as Mike did. If I had known that swapping it out after the fact would be so difficult, I would have. If anyone has a contact or part #, and est cost to replace I'd appreciate it.

When I asked my dealer about it, they told me the oem chrome grills run about $650, plus installation.

The aftermarket manager told me they were hoping for an aftermarket grill option soon.....

I too would love to swap out my black grill for a Chrome one, but $650 plus install is pretty steep. The chrome snap-in inserts are only $100 on ebay, but not sure of the quality/looks.

Lefty - I called about the clip-on one and emailed him a pic of the front of my truck. They guy I talked to said they do not make one that fits that grill. He said they are coming out with one though and to check back in 6 weeks or so. I agree for 650 plus install I think I'll survive with what I have. Not sure of the quality/look of the snap on one either, but for $100 I guess you just order and install and if it looks like crap, just send it back... I think that's the plan for me. Thanks for the info.

Ive seen the z71 emblem missing on new ones sitting on the lot. Between you saying it was easy to remove me seeing that I foreshadowing seeing a lot of them falling off in the future

Have you guys not heard of Ebay? I like the Z71 grille better and got one off Ebay for $225. My '13 had the mostly chrome front end and I liked it. I think it is the larger or coarser honeycomb I don't care for.

x2 Ace Ventura. Victory red with Z71 grille.

As far as dealer knowledge, it varies widely. Front end people mostly know SQUAT! A few parts guys are clued in and a few techs also. I have a '14 Silverado so I'm more "into" them than most techs. To most, it's just another vehicle to work on. No better or worse than any other. All in a days job. But to know everything, like how every piece of trim or molding is attached or if it is serviceable on every or any specific vehicle is absurd. There are no "Hands On" GM new vehicle training classes that I can find other than sales and marketing crap. There are specific classes for engines transmissions etc.but not overall vehicle. Haven't been to a new product ( ie: new vehicle ) class in many years. Sorry for the rant, just a little levity needed here sometimes.

I wish one of you were closer, I'd trade my chrome grille for the Z71 grille in a heart beat, as long as I didn't have to do the change.

Hey Cap did you ever end of up ordering that snap on?? I don't love my z71 black grill.... I did find a clip on version you spoke of on Ebay but suspicious of quality.

Any progress on aftermarket grills for the 15 z71 grills??

Here is a snap on... anyone ever use this product?????..

    • Monthly payment is only part of the equation. With today's prices and interest rates, I'd look at the total monthly cost: payment, insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and expected repairs. A vehicle that fits comfortably into your budget is usually the better choice than stretching for a higher trim. I've also kept my vehicles longer over the past few years. New cars have gotten expensive enough that driving one for 10+ years, while staying on top of maintenance, often ends up being the most cost-effective approach.
    • 10 Ford and Chevy engines proven to reach 300,000 miles   You may note a common 3K OCI on this list of gas motors. I skipped over the diesels. Dh'O.
    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.
    • apparently CA smog is (or at least was)  checking that the vehicle is using the oem and/or a ca smog approved tune, so I expect you'll fail inspection doing it.
    • yes, leaking exhaust will mess up o2 sensor readings, which in turn messes up fuel trims.
