2014: what will I lose once free OnStar & XM trial expires?

Other than the obvious (no more XM radio and no OnStar access), what functionality is lost once the free trial subscriptions expire if I don't renew? What I'm specifically wondering about is:

 

- OnStar RemoteLink iPhone app: I've heard the remote features (lock/unlock, remote start/cancel start, horn & lights) will still work without a subscription to OnStar. Can anyone confirm this, and comment on other features?

- OnStar RemoteLink: ability to send addresses from iPhone RemoteLink app to nav radio?

- Weather feature of nav radio: does this get weather info via OnStar or the XM signal? I'm assuming this will require a subscription to keep this working?

 

I'm fundamentally against both XM and OnStar, but I'd like to know what all I will be giving up. XM has a great product, but their business practice of continuing to hold you liable to pay for service you receive AFTER your subscription expires is abhorrent to me. If I pay for 12 mos., give me 12 mos. then shut the service off. Don't let the service continue to run then bill me for 2 more months. For that reason alone I will never give XM another dime. OnStar left me stranded with my keys locked in once in a wide-open parking lot, but that was years ago and I'm sure their service has improved. I just think it's overpriced, and I have a cell phone to make calls, so no thanks.

 

Anyway, enough about my gripes, just curious about the loss of functionality once the free XM and OnStar expires. Any insight will be appreciated.

I usually go with Sirius and negotiate yearly. Just go to customer retention complain about something threaten to cancel and its usually 1/2 price.Can do same with xm

Make sure you don't leave a credit card on file with XM, and be very firm that you do not want an auto renew. I've been there done that! Oh and don't expect to speak to anyone that can speak English.

I too am curious about what features will still work after my trial is up. Onstar is definitely overpriced so I will not be purchasing that, but I will get XM if I can get it for half price like others have.

You should have no problem negotiating. When you call, ask to speak to the supervisor, the initial customer service rep normally has no authority to discount. On my 2013 Malibu, I'm paying $85 for the year, I'm sure others are doing better, but I don't want to have to speak to them more than once a year.

That's just what I did for my wife on her '12 equinox......93.00 year all in.

I just renovated my XM for 24.95 six months of service. Anything over $5 a month is too much for me.

I was offered the same but chose to go for the one year deal I got instead. Everytime I speak to them my blood pressure goes way up.

When I called to transfer my service from my old car to the new truck the girl I spoke with said that the traffic and weather feature of these trucks is provided thru SiriusXM. So you will lose that if you do not renew that service.

 

In my last car, I never paid more than $5 a month for SiriusXM service. At first I had 6 months free. Then I called and used a deal for 6 more months at $4.67 a month. Which comes out to about $28 dollars. I did that for another year, same exact plan. I just tell them not to auto-renew. And that I will keep coming back if they let renew like this every time.

 

Sometimes the first person I talk to will make it easy. Other times I had to talk to 3-4 different people over the course of a week (they would be hounding me!) and finally that last person would give in and do the $4.67 a month deal for 6 months. What I dont understand is I flat out told them, I would subscribe for 2 years if they gave me the same rate. But instead they want to waste time calling me every 6 months to renew for the same thing anyways. Oh well, their loss.

On my 2013 Cruze, I let the onstar subscription expire. After a month of no service, they sent me an offer for 6 months free. The was a 6month bonus if I went to State Farm agent to get an insurance quote.

 

As for XM, the 6 months for $25 is a common offer. I was able to renew for a year for $69 if I added my credit card for a renew. If you Google XM deals, there are many options and discount codes floating around.

So when my XM radio expires in 3 months I will lose my traffic and weather BUT if I renew for say $25 every 6 months I will get to keep those two features (and some stations of course)? Darnit, I always thought the traffic and weather were tethering off my Bluetooth
