PIT5240B: HVAC System And Heated And/Or Cooled Seats Operation During Remote Vehicle Start Event - (Feb 11, 2014)
Subject: HVAC System And Heated And/Or Cooled Seats Operation During Remote Vehicle Start Event 999999995.gif Models: 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2015 Chevrolet Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 2015 GMC Sierra, Yukon Models

This PI was superseded to update model list and HVAC RVS operation. Please discard PIT5240A.

Some owners may question how the following systems operate during a remote vehicle start (RVS) event:

  • Dual Zone Auto (RPO CJ2) HVAC settings
  • Single Zone Manual (RPO C67) HVAC settings
  • Rear window defogger
  • Heated seats
  • Cooled seats
  • Heated steering wheel
DUAL ZONE AUTO (RPO CJ2) HVAC SETTINGS:

Built before the following break points:

12/17/2013 at Flint (11th Vin Position "F")

1/7/2014 at Ft Wayne (11th Vin Position "Z")

1/13/2014 at Silao (11th Vin Position "G")

1/21/14 at Arlington (11th Vin Position "R")

HVAC settings will remain set to the previous HVAC settings when the ignition was turned off. If the owner is requiring a certain HVAC setting during a remote start, they will need to adjust the mode, blower and temperature as required prior to turning the ignition off.

Important Note: The HVAC control module calibrations in TIS2WEB have been updated. If the HVAC control module is reprogrammed with the latest calibrations in TIS2WEB for any reason, the operation will change. After the HVAC module is reprogrammed, the HVAC settings during a RVS event will operate similar to vehicles built on or after the breakpoints listed above. See description below:

For vehicles built on or after the breakpoints listed above:

Cold ambient temperature that is below 50°F (10°C):

Mode = Defrost

Temperature = 72°F (+/- 5°F) Example: If the owner had the temperature set to 80°F, the HVAC would be set to 77°F during a remote start. (72°+5°=77°)

Blower = Six bars

Recirculation = Fresh Air

A/C compressor = Only commanded on if conditions allow compressor engagement.

Hot ambient temperature that is above 59°F (15°C):

Mode = Last known settings

Temperature = 72°F (+/- 5°F) Example: If the owner had the temperate set to 80°F, the HVAC would be set to 77°F during a remote start. (72°+5°=77°)

Blower = Last known settings, unless the blower was in the "Off" position. In which case, the blower will be turned to the "Auto" setting.

Recirculation = Recirculation

A/C compressor = On

Mid ambient temperature that is anything between the cold and hot ambient temperature values:

Mode = Last known setting

Temperature = Last known setting(s)

Blower = Last known setting

Recirculation = Last known setting

A/C compressor = Last known setting

On transition to ignition on following an RVS event , the HVAC settings will return to last known settings.

SINGLE ZONE MANUAL (RPO C67) HVAC SETTINGS:

Built before below date break points:

12/17/2013 at Flint (11th Vin Position "F")

1/7/2014 at Ft Wayne (11th Vin Position "Z")

1/13/2014 at Silao (11th Vin Position "G")

1/21/14 at Arlington (11th Vin Position "R")

A/C compressor = Only commanded on if conditions allow compressor engagement.

Hot ambient temperature that is above 59°F (15°C):

Mode = Panel Vents

Temperature = Last known setting

Blower = Last known setting

Recirculation = Recirculation

A/C compressor = On

Mid ambient temperature that is anything between the cold and hot ambient temperature values:

Mode = Last known setting

Temperature = Last known setting

Blower = Last known setting

Recirculation = Last known setting

A/C compressor = Last known setting

On transition to ignition on following an RVS event, the HVAC settings will return to last known settings.

REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER:

During a remote start event, the rear window defogger will turn on if the outside temperature is 44 deg F (7 deg C) or below. It will stay on for 10 minutes when the key is turned to run. The indicator will NOT be illuminated until the key is turned to run.

HEATED SEATS:

Important: If a RVS event is performed within 2 hrs. of shutting the engine off, the heated seats may not turn on, depending on how long the engine was running on the previous ignition cycle. This is due to the outside temperature sensor being inaccurate because of the heat generated by the engine radiator. If testing for an inoperative heated seat during an RVS event, allow the vehicle to sit outside in ambient temperatures below 50 deg F (10 degs C) with the ignition off for more than 2 hours. Then sit in the front seat which exhibited the concern, (drivers or passenger) and perform a RVS event.

During a remote start event, the heated seats will turn to the high setting when the ambient temperature is below 50 deg F (10 degs C). They will turn off when the key is turned to run. The indicator will NOT be illuminated when the heated seats are on during a remote start. Note: The heated seats feature needs to be turned on in the "Settings" menu before they will operate during a remote start.

COOLED SEATS:

During a remote start event, the cooled seats will turn to the high setting when the ambient temperature is above 80 deg F (27 degs C). They will turn off when the key is turned to run. The indicator will NOT be illuminated when the cooled seats are on during a remote start. Note: The cooled seats feature needs to be turned on in the "Settings" menu before they will operate during a remote start.

HEATED STEERING WHEEL:

During a remote start event, the heated steering wheel does not turn on.

Current GM info. Maybe TAC has more info but haven't had an opportunity to talk to them about it.

There is no way my seats are on high on my RVS event. I ran the truck the other night before I get off my shift at 12am. it was 10° outside. Got in the truck while it was running under the RVS event, put the key and turn it on. After boot up the rear defroster turned on as dictated but the seats were ice cold.

I turned the seats on and they didn't get warm for about 4 miles after leaving my office. I drive maybe 1/4 mile with no stop signs and hop right on the interstate.

I passed my thoughts onto the Chief Engineer over the truck line about the RVS system and settings. Never got anything out of him in regards to operation, I assume it is because it would require complete module reprogramming for all vehicles which would cost GM some serious $$$ for sure.

I run mine the full 10 minutes and it's been in the single digits lately. I'm 6.4 miles from work which takes me around 14 minutes on a good to get to work. It starts getting warm around 3/4 of the way there,so around 17 minutes. That's horrible. There s no excuse for that.

So your seat was never working? I have a 2015 SLT and my heaters work great however during remote start they dont come on at all even with the option selected. I could have sworn the lights on the button were on when they were on even in remote start- I know my wifes acadia it shows her seat warmers are on even during remote start.

Several times my remote link and keyless start refused to work. Truck has been at dealer longer then I've owned it with other issues (1000k mile, 50k dollar 15' All Terrain).

Light does not come on these trucks during remote start.

GM servicing dealer fixed my seat heater failure. Read post #36 in the attached link

My truck goes in next week for heated seat bottoms not working at all. How long does it take your seats to heat up now without remote start. Also do they ever get warm enough that you have to turn them down?

Thank you

Thank you

Yes,

The fault was only affected the driver's side and once repaired it heats properly and just as it did before it failed and yes, on high they get very hot. Refer to thread #36 in the link below and you can read the diagnostic report that the dealer recorded when evaluating the seat heat problem and before they changed both the lower and seat back heating elements.

Do you have heated and cooled? I'm assuming yes if you have a Denali. I ordered my truck and the day it came in they barely got warm. They checked it, said it was working but since last August nothing. Just wondering if the elements etc. may be different since my build. When they worked I could have them on for 2 hours and just barely warm.

I am in the same camp as most people on this thread. My Denali built last December doesn't appear to have heated seats turning on during RVS. If I turn them on manually, the back gets plenty warm, but the bottom I really can't tell if its getting warm or if its just me making the seat warm sitting on it for a while. Maybe I am just spoiled by my wife's Charger which has heated seats you could grill a steak on.

Mine (they are the heated a cooled) gets the seat bottom hot enough that it is necessary to turn it down.

I have a 2014 GMC Denali Truck.
I agree that the heated seats with remote start is weak (and yes the enable option is checked in the infotainment setup menu).
I travel extensively for work and rent many vehicles and compared to them and all the other GM vehicles I have owned over the years, the heat is hardly noticeable when the remote start is activated and less than stellar under normal driving conditions.
I hate the cold seats in the winter mornings and it usually takes me about 30 minutes of driving after a 10 minute remote start before the seat get hot enough to turn down to medium or low...
The steering wheel heat is almost instant! I agree with another member that it should also activate with the remote start, but that is a different issue...
Regarding the heated seats: whether it is working as designed or not, GM needs to recognize this issue and step up to help their customers who paid for an option that many people have identified as not working as expected.
I have to be honest, this to me is a serious flaw, probably the most disappointing part of this awesome truck.
Having the dealer say it works is frustrating, I feel a recall is in order and appropriate.

    • Still looks like a rivet to me in the pics, I don't see a nut and none of the pics show the head of the screw. But if you says so.....
    • Thanks for all the help so far!   I did try right from 2026 right down to 2021, and only from 2023 down lets me select the option for tire psi change, but I get the vehicle not supported error!   I'll definitely try it under Chevrolet after work today, and I'll get the sensor number from gm for my truck tire sensors. And I'll let you know if it works for me under Chevrolet!   And if that doesn't work, I'm going to guess that what @Atlas said about maybe I have a different body control module could be true!
    • From where I'm sitting this sounds like a compatibility problem. I'm assuming the 2007 was a 900-series truck, and not an 800-series (they were sold side-by-side in dealerships that model year), since it starts and runs.   This is why I HATE post-2006 vehicles. Everything becomes a huge problem when you try to keep the thing running for longer than the manufacturer has designed it to.    I can't remember when Global-A architecture started - either '10 or '11. For your sake, you had better hope it's '11, or you're going to be spending some BIG money to correct this cluster-eff. That's something you need to find out before doing anything else. You may have several computers bricked ... but the fact that it runs tells me you MIGHT be ok here.     EDIT: Just did a quick refresher. You're screwed. This is Global-A. The 2 systems are NOT compatible in the slightest. Once you get the correct engine in there that IS compatible, you're going to need to see how many computers are locked. Absolute NIGHTMARE to straighten out, too. Your buddy might be better off cutting his losses and finding something else.   Welcome to post-2006 vehicle electronics. This is why I quit the industry, and drive nothing built after 1994. This stuff takes all the fun out of wrenching!

    • True, hard to say what differences there may or may not be between Chev and GM as well as a production year or mid year part change either.    I just found it odd that under the Sierra choice on the Autel that many of the last few years of production year did not include the choice of changing the tire pressure but if that is an Autel thing or a GM thing as to why the choices were not there. Knowing what tpms sensors are on the truck should give some guidance into which choices on the tool even make sense to try as I wouldn't give up just yet with the tool but I guess he will see what if anything he comes up with if he finds out a bit more info and tries a few more things on the Autel.
