Finally Bought my 2014 Silverado LTZ Z71...my experience

Congrats! I traded in my 2013 Tacoma SR5 4x4 on my new Sierra. I didn't have the Tacoma very long but I don't miss it. It was a good truck but when the wife and I took our first trip in the Tacoma during Thanksgiving; I quickly found the lack of space was a pain, and V8 gas mileage from a V6 sucked. First week of December, I traded it in on the GMC. I only have 450 miles on the GMC but i'm already getting better MPG on my GMC than I did on the Tacoma.

Yeah the mileage wasn't very good for a V6 but the engine is a 10 year ole design. It was quick and had a better if not equal 0-60mph time as a 5.7 Ram Hemi. I know i wont miss the lack of cabin space one bit. I was either in the dashboard, or my seat was almost all the way back and my poor 2 year old couldn't move her legs. Every indication from Toyota is the new Tacoma will only get an updated 4.0L found in the FJ and 4 runner which sill still give it bad mileage for a 6 cyl. I just hope the Silverado will be as good if not close to reliable as my Tacoma was.

So far this trip is off to a bad start, the plane broke down before we took off and i wont make it to Arkansas now until after the dealer is closed. I will say my salesman is taking care of me though.

That sucks about the plane. Chalk it off to one of life experiences and not bad karma. Good luck in your travels, I'll be looking for the pics and your first review.

To anyone interested...I seen a couple posts above refer to Laura Buick GMC. Well, I thought I would throw in my 2 cents since I have first hand experience with them. I just bought my 2014 GMC Crew Cab 4x4 from them about 3 1/2 weeks ago. I'm from Wichita Kansas and spent a couple of months searching and researching nationwide...trying to find the best deal. I came across Laura Buick GMC and their prices DID seem too good to be true. I showed the truck I was interested in to all the local and surrounding dealerships...they pulled up the link online and ran the VIN to see if it was legit...which it was...but they could not touch the price. Every salesman I spoke with told me I better go get it. So, to make a long story short...and after a lot of going back and forth with Laura Buick GMC on the phone...I made a deal, flew there and picked it up. The truck MSRP'd for $49495.00 with an automatic manufacturers rebate of $1000.00 for the SLT Plus Package...which brought it down of course to $48495.00. I had a 2008 GMC Crew Cab 4x4 that I was going to trade...but they wanted to rape me on the trade in (which all dealerships do)...so I didn't get the additional $1750.00 for trade in allowance. However, I still ended up getting the truck for $40245.00 out the door price (plus $174.00 doc fee). So, it was a good price on the truck. Now then, to explain a little bit about their customer service...the salesman I dealt with was mostly friendly...but didn't do everything he could have to see that the transaction went smoothly. However, most everyone there lacks in customer service and is not very friendly...especially the Finance person. In my opinion I would fire him along with the receptionist that answers the phone. The truck was not ready for delivery when I arrived...it was still being washed...even though they knew 2 days ahead of time that I was flying in to pick it up (I even gave them a deposit..so they knew I was coming for sure). And, even when they finished washing it...it was not very clean at all. However, I had about 400 mile trip back...so I didn't make a big deal about it. Other than that...if a person wants a truck at a decent price...then it's an "OK" place. Just don't count on them being overly friendly or going above and beyond to see that you are satisfied! As for the truck itself...I'm not completely satisfied with the 2014 GMC. I've always owned GM...mostly Chevy's. This truck has rattle issues...which I posted on that in another topic area, looking for feedback. I never had any trouble with my Chevy's...and GMC is supposed to be a step above Chevy. Either way, a brand new truck should be quiet and tight. If I take a road with any kind of bumps or is not completely smooth...it has rattles that seem to come from the passenger area. I've talked to the local GMC dealership and was told that rattles are sometimes hard to find and could create more when they start tearing into things trying to find them. However, I have an appointment to take it in next week for some other issues...such as a clunking noise when I accelerate (the sound reminds me of what a bad U-joint sounds like)...and the issue of a bad smell that sometimes comes out when I turn the heater on. So again, I'm not completely happy with this truck...and will probably be trading it in about a year.

Great write up! The smell you are smelling, does it smell like anti-freeze? if so there has been reports of bad heater cores, thought you should know.

It's suck you have the rattle issue, I've read that others are experiencing similar. Try searching the forum, there my be some resolution for you.

The acceleration issue, could possibly be a rear shock issue. Had my rear replaced due to leaking, I had no clunk but other have report that they did.

Best of luck,

Thanks Mike for the response! The smell isn't that of anti-freeze...but like a old gym locker or smelly gym socks! It about made my girlfriend sick when she smelled it last night...lol! Anyway, thanks again and I'll take everything under advisement.

Curious what the issue was in the finance dept? I bought there in April & it was hands down the best buying experience I have had due in part to the finance person NOT trying to do any bs. With past vehicles it was the finance guy that would always boil my blood before leaving with a vehicle I was buying. I live within 100 miles of the place & also brought my own money, so was not financing through them. Regardless, you still have to deal with that department.

That said, the receptionist is generally out to lunch even when she is there. David Powell was my sales rep & have sent friends that bought as well.

Well I made it back in one piece...Since my flight was delayed by 8 hours, I wasn't able to pick the truck up until Saturday morning. My salesman Shawn, took me to a hotel and picked me up the next morning. Everything went smooth. I was expecting a bait and switch, since the dealership knew I travelled all the way out from Colorado and was expecting to be driving back in my new Silverado. It was one of the best car buying experiences, and I would recommend anyone who would consider buying out of state to check them out, Fayetteville Autopark in Fayetteville Arkansas. No hassle, no pressure to buy warranties, rust prevention, high priced paint treatments...etc. It took about 2 hours to complete the paperwork since I had part cash, and the rest on credit card. After hanging meeting up with one of my Air Force buddy who I haven't seen in 15 years. I hit the open road to Wichita where I planned on spending the night. First, no squeaks or rattles. The mpgs is a little low, but I'm sure once it gets some miles on it, it will improve. So as I started my journey, I kept my eyes peeled for the 3 big issues I've read here, no radio LED, warped dash, and driving vibration. Well I'm 2 for 3. My truck surprisingly has the blue LED's around the radio controls. It does have the dashboard warp going on which I pointed out my salesguy....and for my issues, they threw on a set of the black molded spashguards. Last no vibration driving over 70....I had close to 700 miles to monitor. My truck has the Goodyear Wrangler SRA's; Also my truck has a build date of 16 Sept.

I got some really crap mileage driving from Wichita, Kansas back to Colorado. It was 15 degrees and there was a 60 mph headwind, so I was only getting 11-12 mpg average for the tank. I used some automotive masking tape to tape of the hood, A Pillar, Leading edge of the fender, roof-line and the painted strip between the grill and the chrome bumper to keep the rock chips at bay since the plan is to get a clear bra. It left some adhesive o nthe paint which I removed with WD-40 and hotwater and car soap. Unfortunately it is 20 degrees outside here and I can't get it cleaned good....pics to come tomorrow since it's supposed to be 52 degrees.

Finally, I paroozed the "Get to know your Silverado" manual, and is specifically addressses the heated seats with the remote start "expect dimished operation of the heated seats when using the remote start option" The truck drives well for a big truck, I just need to adjust to the size coming from a Tacoma, it's not as bad as I thought and what those on TacomaWorld say about the new fullsize trucks.

One thing I didn't get was one of those fancy portfolios that the owners manual comes in....just a ziplock bag :( They did tint the front window for me for free which was a nice surprise.

Sounds great...I love mine now that it dont vibrate...I dont have led around my radio knobs..no biggie..anyways enjoy your new silverado)

Yeah, them Broncos are doing well. I'm not holding my breath as Peyton seems to like to choke in the playoffs. As for the warping issue, it's not the end of the world. I'll wait until I'm due for an oil change and have my local dealer look at it. It doesn't affect the way the truck drives, so I'm not as concerned as others that have had this problem. It definitely seems to be connected to the outside temp.

Even though I had my own financing already lined up...the Finance department still handles all the paper work. So, the real issue with the Finance Department was the fact that the guy who handles the paperwork was not very friendly at all. I will try to explain the situation. So to start...I of course, had been in conversation back and forth several times with salesman before I even made the trip and I explained to him about how I had my own financing and I had asked him how that would process...in other words, I had asked the salesman what needed to happen...and how the dealership prefers to be paid!! His response was that it was no big deal...that people have their own financing all the time...that I could either pay them directly and my bank just deposits the money in my account or the bank will send them (the dealership) a cashiers check. Anyway, my bank's preferred way to process the loan was to send a cashiers check directly to the dealership. So, it was left at that. Anyway, after I arrived, I was taken to the finance guy to get the ball rolling. As soon as I sat down in his office I started to explain to him that my bank is sending a cashiers check for a certain amount and that I would pay remaining balance (my down payment) with a personal check. He immediately responded with a very disgusted attitude and said "WHAT? I WILL NOT RELEASE THAT VEHICLE TO YOU WITHOUT US HAVING THE MONEY HERE." I went on to explain that they were sending a cashiers check...and that my bank had been talking to someone at the dealership and had explained their process. Again, he responded in a very hateful attitude "WELL, THEY DIDN’T TALK TO ME.” So, I said well I will just have to get the Loan Officer on the phone to find out who it was. He said “IT DOESN’T MATTER…I’M NOT GOING TO RELEASE THAT VEHICLE TO YOU WITHOUT A CASHIERS CHECK BEING IN MY HAND.” I responded that either something has to be worked out or they were going to have to take me back to the airport…which it did not matter to him…he just said “WELL WE MAY JUST HAVE TO DO THAT.” He then suggested that I “GO AHEAD AND FINANCE THROUGH HIM”…so that I could "GO AHEAD AND TAKE THE VEHICLE.” I told him “no way am I financing through him…that I already had financing.” I said “look I can get my Loan Officer on the phone and perhaps your manager in the room and we get it worked out.” He responded with “FINE, GET YOUR LOAN OFFICER ON THE PHONE.” So, I finally was able to get her on the phone. I asked her who she had originally spoke with at the dealership…my Loan Officer replied that it was the person who handles the Title work. Turns out, that wasn’t good enough! Anyway, as the Finance guy proceeded to talk with my Loan Officer…he strongly suggested (almost demanded) that they wire the money to him! My Loan Officer responded with “look, we sent the check certified mail and they should have within a day.” That still wasn’t good enough. I spoke up and said “look, I can write a personal check for the amount and have my bank cancel that cashiers check or you can tear it up when you get it and my bank can just pay me.” He said “NO WAY, I KNOW RIGHT NOW YOU DON’T HAVE THAT MONEY IN YOUR ACCOUNT…SINCE THEY ARE SENDING US A CASHIERS CHECK.” I said “how do you know?” He didn’t respond!! I couldn’t believe he had the audacity to even say that. So, I offered one more solution…I said “what if they send you a photo copy of the cashiers check and I go ahead and write a personal check for the full amount…then you can tear up my personal check when you receive the cashiers check.” I went on to tell him to “get his manager in the office while we were all there and while the Loan Officer was on the phone…to see if he would except that.” He again responded disgustingly with…”FINE, LET ME GO TALK TO HIM.” So, he went to speak with the manager (the manager never did come into the room). Well, he finally came back and said that was acceptable. So, needless to say…the incident was very stressful…stressful to the point that I could have easily popped the guy in his jaw!!…not only because he brought on undue stress…but for the fact he was very hateful and totally lacked customer service!! Again, I believe the salesman should have been a little more pro-active in making sure this went more smoothly…but he stayed completely out it. In fact, he disappeared. Perhaps he was embarrassed about how the Finance guy was acting…who knows!! Either way, the only good experience was that it was a decent price on the truck. However, they sure didn’t offer to throw in any extras. Anyway, I know this response is long winded…but I don’t know how else to explain accurately.

    • I have a basic 2026 1500 WT  (2.7L/4WD reg cab shorttbed). Comfy, generally happy with electronics/radio - but is there a way I can add switches to steering wheel right-side position (curr. empty) so I can adjust volume, push phone button to voice dial, etc? Bill W San Jose
    • The curb weight on a 1 ton crew cab long bed is around 7k lbs.  Now, I don't know where you went to school but 9k is not more than 2x 7k lbs. More than 2x 7k lbs would be 14k+.   With that said, obviously yes you're going to feel a 9k lb trailer when slowing down.  I already said, when accelerating.  When changing lanes?  No.  But if you look at the context of what was quoted, the original person said, "after a mile or two..." which means that would be after the accelerating portion and you're driving a generally steady pace.  Please do learn to read and comprehend.

    • Like I've said before. Di and Carbon buildup is not that big of a concern. Engine had minimal buildup, and that engine was obviously not super well maintained. Do regular oil changes, and you're gtg as long as the rest of the truck lasts. Also, the High Pressure FP that people ****** about, but can't tell you why.  Now, I wish they'd trash the variable oil pump. No real world issues with them, but I'll gladly eat whatever miniscule MPG it's saving me in favor of more oil at all RPMs.    Curious to see his assessment of the 7.3 compared to the 6.6. I expect he'll praise the port inj, but from a structural standpoint, the 6.6 is as robust as any engine out there.    Not to take away from the 7.3. I feel it's equally as good as the 6.6.     As to heat on the rear cyls, I'd have to see numerous examples before I'd say it's an issue. Especially not knowing the history of that engine. For all is known, they could have blown a rad hose, and ran it hot, and the 2 rear cyls may be the first to get hot in a low coolant situation, but not be an issue aside from that.
    • "Life is getting back to normal."    I'm driving again and all new joints are operating as expected for this stage of recovery.   My most recent joint replacement still requires a lot of attention but experience has taught me that time will quiet the remaining pain.  I joked with my surgeon that another joint replacement would take my mind off my most recent surgery and he responded by saying the next will be a hip!  There are no plans for another surgery but, unlike me, I don't think he was joking!  I certainly wouldn't refuse further replacement  if required but hope to spend time out of the "post-op"  period.  I can't stress enough that if you have been recommended for total hip, knee or shoulder replacement that you welcome the offer.  Post-op "recovery" may sound daunting and painful, however, this is far better than the insidious erosion of mobility you are currently experiencing.  Imagine what it would feel like to wake up most mornings feeling better and more mobile than you did the previous day!  Prior to my first surgery in June 2025, even getting out of bed was becoming a formidable task.  Since the day after my first surgery, I get out of bed everyday easily and unassisted.  Making the switch to feeling a little better each day rather than a little worse, is hugely motivating!
