GMC compared to Toyota

Since I bought two vehicles this year I thought it would be interesting to post my experience with each.

 

2013 4 Runner purchased August put on 4300 miles. No recalls, no detects, no concerns vehicle has not had any problems

 

2014 Sierra purchase September put on 3600 miles. On delivery small dent in right front fender, repaired by dealer with paintless dent repair( 1 trip to dealer) LED bed light not installed at factory, installed by dealer( 2 trips) Poor FM reception, unresolved( 1 trip to dealer) Broken dip stick, replaced by dealer( 2 trips) Back sliding window not able to open, recall part on order. Dealer over 20 miles away round trip.

 

The local dealer has been very helpful and I believe is doing everything he can to correct the problems. I purchased the Sierra over a Tundra because I thought I was getting a more updated truck. I am wondering it I made the right decision.

Just for reference our 2012 Toyota sienna rattles worse than any gm vehicle I have ever owned. Also the road noise in the cabin is awful too. I am glad it's not my DD. To hear the radio you have to have it pretty high. Luckily neither issue bothers my wife.

 

Where I am going with this is Issues happen with any manufacturer. I could easily take it in to have fixed but I can imagine what they will so so once it warms up I am going to fix the drivers side rear door rattle.

what ^^^ this guy said. i have never bought a 1st year model truck except for this one due to the fact that the interior is so much nicer than the gmt 900 and these trucks finally got a bigger rearend (12 bolt). im almost certain that there will be recalls on some parts and some parts may wear that shouldnt and gm will most likely fix it will just be an inconvienence. no biggie to me, i've had my truck for about a month and have 2500 miles on it and have enjoyed every mile!

correct. i was just saying there still might be some recalls. and also there might be parts that fail (i.e. the gmt 900 had that premature cam wear) gm will fix.

I own a '05 Toyota Sienna, and my truck (and an old Honda). All bought new. My experience has been that both the Toyota and GM are good vehicles, but the GMC has been less trouble so far... by a good margin. I do my own work, for the most part, and have yet to turn a bolt on the GMC (excluding dealer warranty work at the very first). As for driving, it's not even close. The GMC is *way* better. As for trucks, I'd look at a Tundra w/ all the rest, and give it a fair shake. I love my truck, but no so much that I'm blind to cost/value. My biggest gripe w/ GM right now is that their pricing seems high, but I haven't "shopped" in a good while to know for sure.

I traded in my 2013 Tacoma for my GMC. So far the interior quality on the GMC is 100 times better, the GMC has better mpg than the V6 Tacoma, I had a vibration in the Tacoma, my GMC is butter smooth, V8 power with the GMC!, sound system In the GMC is 100 times better than the tacoma, paint is better on the GMC, etc...

 

I have bought numerous first year vehicles and have never had problems with any of them. I get tired of hearing of the "first year" problems. When I had my 2011 5.0 Mustang, which was a first year run on a new motor and new transmission; people complained. Guess what, people are still complaining with the exact same problems with the 2014 5.0's.

 

There will be problems during the first year; and guess what? There will be problems occurring during the last year of production on this model of pickup.

A couple of thoughts considering I just sold a 2007 Toyota Tacoma and still own a 2011 Toyota Sienna. It goes without saying that my family likes Toyota and GM. Toyota has top notch build quality....normally. Our Toyota Sienna has been a great vehicle, but a departure from the typical Toyota reputation. While we haven't had any real mechanical issues with the Sienna, it has a few squeaks and rattles, and it's going in here soon to have the brakes checked since about last month, they've been extremelyysensitive and have locked up a couple times which they shouldn't being the are an ABS system. I looked at the Tundra when I made the move, but found the new look of the 2014 to be ugly, also the drivetrain wasn't updated, so the mpgs for the Crewcab with the 5.7 gets a whopping 13 mpg city and 17 city. They too aren't without their problems. A friend of mine has a 2013 Tundra with a leaking front windshied to where his headliner under his sun visor had water damage after a pouring rain. It took the dealer 2 times to seal the window, now he has mold under the headliner. I still think Toyota has better overall build quality in regards to fit and finish on the assembly line, but looking at the new offerings from GM compared to the Toyota's, the gap had narrowed significantly. While my Silverado has the wave in the dashboard, I still feel this is a well built truck....hopefully, it will be reliable mechanically. Our Sienna is a first year production vehicle and hasn't had any mechanical issues either. I don't think there is an issue buying a first year production car as manufactuers test, test and test some more these vehicles before mass producing them. If anything what you will find is issues in the manufacturing process in the factory that have to be ironed out rather than a true design flaw. As others have said anything that is mechanically built will inherently have problems here and there.

an addition to my post, I have had other vehicles in the first year of production and had no defects or problems(most of them GM vehicles) my concern and the reason for the post is the quality control issues that I have seen on my truck. I think that someone at the assembly plant should have seen and corrected the problems before it left the factory. Maybe the truck was built on Monday morning or Friday afternoon.

Keep in mind not every vehicle rolling of the assembly line gets a full QA check, maybe every 10 built.

Yes they test them a bunch, but they are not being mass produced at that point
