How did applying my emergencies burst my brake line?

Can someone explain how this happened? I was pulled over for warning oncoming traffic of a speed trap and the officer asked me to verify my emergency brake was working. It was quite the uphill so I had to push the emergency petal all the way down to hold the truck against reverse. After I pulled away I found that my regular breaks were soft so I pulled into a mall and found my rear brake line had burst and bled out.

How can applying emergencies put stress on the brake lines? I'm sure on my truck they are fully independent (2002 GMC Sierra 4x4).

Is there something I've done wrong when I changed my drum emergencies and disc regular pads on the back a year ago? (I haven't used my emergencies since then).

Many thx

The emergency brake is cable operated and does not utilize the hydraulic service brakes. Just luck of the draw that your service brakes failed after applying the emergency brake.

Too much of a coincidence for the brake line to rupture (not just begin leaking) at that exact moment but I agree with you guys I can't fathom how the two could be related.

I didn't get a ticket but I would have if my parking brake wouldn't have held. Just out of curiosity - how do you disable ABS without pulling the fuse? My ABS is misbehaving so I pulled the fuse. Now the brake dashboard light is on which what caught the officer's attention. I've put the fuse back in just so the repair shop doesn't start trying to fix other things that aren't needed.

Simple, really: the cop was pissed off when you passed the PB test, so he sliced your brake line while walking back to his cruiser. :jester:

Hey so I think I figured out my mystery. When you really apply your parking brake hard the sleeve moves a bit - especially where it is curved - like right where is passes by the pneumatic brake line! With brake lines as rusty as mine 2002 in Toronto that pull is enough to brake the line that's hanging on my a thread.

Thanks for the theories folks - smiled especially at wolfmanjohn's

Cheers
