What programmer should I use?

Recommended Posts

I have a lifted 2008 Silverado with a 6in suspension lift and a 3in body lift with currently 35x1250x20 tires but I am about to upgrade to either a 37in or 38in tire. Truck has the 4.8L V8. I was wondering which programmer is the best for my truck ect. Diablo, Hypertech, Bully Dog or Edge? Or any other recommendations?

Canned tunes are not your best choice. Blackbear or another custom tune is far superior. But with 37s and a 4.8 I hope you plan to regear too.

yeah the truck is still a work in progress, I am doing things little at a time. I have heard about Blackbear but not really familiar with custom tunes. When it comes to motor work and custom tuning i'm a dummy, not my line of work.

I have used edge Canned tunes in the past they were alright I liked the monitor the best so on my current truck is only got the edge with monitoring capabilities so I can shop for a custom tune... Not sure what I want yet though

Just say no to canned tunes unless your primary goal is shift parameters and speedo recal. I have seen Hypertech actually lose Peak HP on the dyno. Canned tunes are generic and designed to fit a wide range of vehicles.

If you go the HP-tuners/EFI-live route, be ready to spend a LOT of time learning how to tune, if that interests you then by all means go for it, but if you don't have time or don't care to lean how to calibrate a MAF table, how to adjust PE, how to Dial in VE, how to hook up a wideband and monitor AFR error, etc. etc.. then its not for you.

Next option is custom tune from a reputable tuner. I would estimate that 5% of the people that claim to be tuners, actually can tune... so do your homework.
