Towing with the 6.2 V8

Recommended Posts

yeah from what I have read on here, the towing power between the5.3 with 3.73 gears and the 6.2 with 3.42 is pretty much a wash, pretty evenly matched .

Ya I have crew cab short box and in owners manual both with 5.3 and 6.2 with 3.73 gears shows 11,800 max tow

I think the manual might be messed up. The new 2015 order guide shows your configuration @ 10900/5.3 and 11700/6.2. The 2014 guide is 11200 and 11800 for NHT in your config.

They did get lowered for 2015 and u can't get a 6.2 with 3.73 gears also in 15

Does the max tow rating really matter if it is 11200, 11500, or 11800?

If you are towing 11000 lbs what difference is it going to make?

It doesn't matter to me. I don't even tow 10k

It would interesting to see how the 5.3L with he 3.73 rartio does compared to the others and the 6.2l.

I have a 14 1500 double cab max trailer pkg, 5.3l 4x4, 3.73s. From my understanding, this set up is the highest rated 1/2 ton for towing for 2014, with max tow capacity being 11,800lbs. I towed a 6800lbs 29' TT, tandem axle and weight distribution hitch, from Minneapolis, MN to Corpus Christi, TX. The trip was 1300 miles one way. Truck drives in 5th gear while in tow haul. I averaged anywhere from 6.2mpg a tank to 8mpg a tank at 65mph. Lots of hills, and wind played a large factor in the lower Mpgs. My previous 3700lbs trailer was towed from MN to Pascagoula MS, in similar conditions, and I averaged 8-10mpg.

I travel for work, pulling my trailer. After upgrading from a 3700lbs trailer to the 5800lbs dry trailer, I will be moving to a 3/4 ton. I'd like to stick with a 1/2 ton, but from the sounds of things the 6.2l does not perform much better.

A diesel will get a little better MPG towing but not that much based on what I see from posts here and my experience with a 2004 Duramax crew cab towing a 4500lb boat and trailer set up. I could get 12 to 13 with it towing the boat at 65 to 70 mph typically. I'll check what I get with this towing the same, sounds like I should expect around 10mpg. The mpg really drops off fast with a diesel with speed because it takes the engine out of it's sweet spot for RPM which is where they really shine. Towing at 55-60mph I got about 15 with the Duramax and that boat.
