Any of you guys doing your own oil changes?

There is a lot magic around here, one guy in some of the engine sections claims, 0-60 in 5.3, that would make the 1/4 mile in high 12s or low 13s, its a 4wd and all stock. Its good if you can do it.

Just because oil comes from a barrel doesn't mean it's not good enough for you. I would almost bet that barrel oil has less impurities than oil from a plastic bottle, since it's more oil per surface area.

 

I don't know where to get barrel synthetic, but I'm pretty sure a few people on here run it in their equipment and big engines. I have been pumping GALLONS of JD and 66 barrel oil into farm machines since I was in grade school and have yet to have a problem.

 

That said, there are other reasons to NOT have the dealer change your oil. For example, I like to know when something goes wrong. If I'm the one changing the oil, I'll be the first to know.

I'm using it till the last service, which with my driving, will be in about 4 months. I have a 55 gallon drum of Torco SR1 0w20 in my garage. I will also probably use Nippon Denso filters or K&N PS series filters once I start doing my own maintenance on this truck. At that time, I'll also probably change out the coolant with Honda Type II coolant and Torco fluids for the trans, transfer case, and rear end. I'll probably use some Stoptech brake fluid as well

Who knows what the heck it is? It "may" meet the Dexos specification, but I'm not very confident with my local dealer's bulk oil. When I change my oil, I know exactly what and how much is ending up in my crankcase.

I have a problem the dealer pumping oil out of a 55 gallon drum with very little labeling and pouring it into my crank case, let alone shorting me a quart. You'd think you could trust an authorized GM dealer to do it right but, evidently not. I think I'll continue to change my own oil and just "donate" the free ones. I'll sleep easier too.

I have no idea. However, I DIDN'T say that I don't trust dealerships in general, I said I didn't trust them to change my oil. I'm guessing that they have factory-trained technicians to do the warranty work but they damn sure don't in the oil change department! Maybe you could get a job there.

Do you think it's different at the factory where the most important oil fill up takes place, the first one?

I have had mine changed at two different dealers so far and both had cases of oil to put in my truck. I always stand where I can watch them work and will talk to the guy changing the oil. The first time he came back with 6qts and I sail you know it holds 8 now. He didn't believe me till he put it in and wasn't full. But there are quarts they should use instead of the bulk material. They do not have enough of the newer engines as of now to change oil in to justify adding a drum of the lower viscosity demos labeled oil. At least that is the case in my area.

I always do my own oil changes. I don't trust someone else to do it (except I trust my dad to do it). Plus it's fun too! I document it in a notebook, the same notebook I document repairs in. I mostly use Valvoline Maxlife Nextgen 5w30.

I'm thinking of changing my oil for the first time at 2000 miles just to get any "break-in wear" out and then letting the dealer do it when the truck says it needs it. I've always changed my oil in all my vehicles at 3000 and don't like the 6000 to 7000 that everything is going to now. Anyway, is there any problem in me changing oil with Mobil 1 which is fully synthetic, and then the dealer putting the "blend" in. Is switching back and forth from full to blend going to hurt anything?

 

Switching back and forth will not hurt a thing.

 

To the original poster, keep a log of your oil changes and reciepts. I also log into my Onstar account and log in my maintenance there as well. Then I even go a little farther and log in to my AMSOIL Garage and keep track there.

I changed my oil at 1000 miles and bought my filter from the dealer because at the time the truck just came out and no one else has it and used a dexos synthetic which if I'm not mistaken you can only get the 0w-20 in synthetic. But I went 2 days ago and had the dealer change the oil and rotate the tires which was free so no complaints. I am not saying every dealer is the same but I know at least mine is thorough because I check everything after anyhow. But after the 2 years I will do it myself because I am real meticulous about the product used and I enjoy it and I like to see how the oil looks coming out to see if there are any problems.
