Does anyone else's engine seem to bog down at lower RPMs? Many times when accelerating it's as if the engine is choking on itself then catches up once a higher RPM is reached.

 

Another funny thing is when driving slowly up a steep incline. The truck seems to stay in 2nd or 3rd gear until it almost stalls. I'll press the pedal in a good one to two inches before it downshifts to first gear at 4k RPM. Seems like a 5.3l should have enough power to drive up a hill without downshifting to first to avoid stalling.

 

Possible fuel pressure problem?

what gears does your truck have? if its the 3.08's its gonna take a bit of push on that skinny pedal to get her moving.

Ha that's what it seems like! My 08 Sierra had an easier time accelerating and going up steep hills.

I have the same issue and was wanting to know as well with the bogging down/hesitation at lower rpm's. I also have the 3.42 gears. Can't comment on going up a hill, it is all flat land here. I think I remember having this on my 2005 GTO, wonder if it has to do with the throttle being electric instead of a cable?? Would a tune take care of this problem?

my 5.3 and the 3.42 gears gets up hills no problem. You just gotta get into the skinny pedal a bit more compared to your 08 with a 4 speed trans. The 6 speed trans needs more throttle to downshift. Don't be afraid to rev the engine up...that's what they are made for.

I HAVE to push the pedal down to get it up the hill. Just seems a little ridiculous to downshift to first gear at 4k RPM to make it up when an older vehicle cruised up no problem.

Under light acceleration, the truck will remain in V4 mode and almost feel like its bogging. Mine does it as well and i just push the gas a little more and you can watch it go into V8 and feel it light up right away. Just put a little lead in your foot lol.

Disclaimer: my 08 was blackbear tuned. Might have spoiled me a little. Too paranoid to tune the new truck because of warranty though.

Combo of Variable Valve Timing, V4, 6 speed. Mine does the same thing. Sometimes at low speed , stomp the gas pedal and NOTHING. Like a deer in the headlights for a second or two.

This is why I like manual transmissions. I currently have one in the 2013 Chevy Sonic. Although I have no complaints about the 4 speed auto transmission behavior either in my Silverado or Impala LTZ. Impala especially is very quick to downshift when you push on the gas pedal even slightly. Silverado requires slightly heavier throttle to downshift but then the non-AFM 5.3 has a lot more torque than the 3.9 liter V6 in my Impala so it can run at lower RPMs in the fourth gear without feeling too strained.

 

I believe that GM in their effort to maximize the fuel economy has pushed things too far on these new trucks and maybe some aftermarket tuning can fix it? We have a 2012 Silverado crew cab 4X4 with the 5.3 AFM engine/6 speed auto at work and I do not find any issues with the transmission shifting. I cannot tell when it is switching between 4 and 8 cylinders either.

Do you still have this problem?

Did you take it in?

Did you figure out a way to encourage to downshift but not all the way to first (or whatever gear is resulting in 4000).

Yeah, still have the problem. Took it in to dealership twice, but they aren't any help. They just say there's no codes, and won't look into it further. Seems almost like a fuel pressure problem or spark problem, but I don't have the means or know how to check it out myself.

 

I did get a diablosport tuner, and the canned tune seems to help. Just started the process for a custom tune from Lew.

 

I did do a log file and noticed the fuel pressure drops when first accelerating. Does anyone know if this is normal?

    • Well one of our most reliable vehicles was sold yesterday. The first and only I gave for free to a grandkid. If they got skin in the game they take care of it. My wife bought new. Five years later my daughter got it to use. We got it back and gave it to our grandson after graduation. He did zero maintenance just oil changes. When the AC quit he drove his mother’s car rather than get it fixed. Instead he just bought a beater and sold the Elantra.

    • What’s missing in all this is patience and investment in the future. Buy a 170K starter home. Ten years later sell it invest in a more expensive home. Eventually you’ll have a 600K home and pay starter home payments. Buy a starter car. Maintain it well. Save the payments after it’s payed for then buy an expensive car if you desire.     • People mislead themselves. Statistics are highly useful indicators.   Here's the tie-in to this thread. If an oil sample tests shows a wear indicator of 7 using cheaper ACDelco oil, and a wear indicator of 2 (lower = less wear) using a particular brand of Mobil oil, and wear has a linear relationship with engine lifespan, anyone could assume that Mobil is reducing wear by more than 50% (let's just say a 200% reduction for you red state people trying hard to do math) which leads to increasing engine life by 2x. Perhaps, in a vacuum, by itself, when dreamed by AI.   Yeah?! That's what the statistic is saying, isn't it?   No, it isn't. It didn't come out and say engine life is doubled. That's a very bad assumption, and a case of severe myopia by assuming something potentially untrue about the only data point in focus.   Average cost of a new car is 50k. You bet it is.   The median cost of a new car is more like 35k. Expensive cars are skewing the perception that "average" now means a $50k price of entry for a very average automobile. And that's not true. People who don't understand statistics twist the living heck out of them to mean all sorts of things they don't actually mean.   "Average" new car payment is $1000/month. Yep, it is. And in that number are all the $35k new car buyers who bring significant equity, and the $25k new car buyers who finance the car for a month just to get a rebate, and then pay it off. Know what isn't in that number? All the payments made by people who don't finance a car.   Picking one's own data point (don't have a car payment, never paid $50k for a new vehicle, my house cost $170k, I afforded a middle class lifestyle on $4.50/hr) is just a data point. Just like earning $25/hr in an area where the median home price is almost $1 Million is a data point. In fact, it's a lot of data points given that 80% of the US population lives in/around major cities. They're not idiots; the vast majority of them do it to make a living because that's where the big money is.   The highs have become higher, lows have become lower, and how your personal mileage varies is not truth for an entire country. At the same time you can't NOT acknowledge the data. While it doesn't paint YOUR personal picture, it certainly tints the reality that you also live in, as does your single data point.
