So around $7.5k with taxes?

 

Not gonna lie, thats pretty steep. Guess if someone can justify this it makes sense. As cool as I think it would be to supercharge my 5.3 just the kit with the install would be a bit shy of $10k. With what I paid for my truck I would much rather buy a 2014 FX4 EB and get a tune on it. Would yeild better numbers overall.

 

To each their own I guess.

If we went by justification we all be driving work trucks with roll up windows and no ac. We be living in 800 sq ft homes with one bathroom. The justification is we want to do, and have the money to do.

Only thing not better about turbos over a supercharger are the facts that it is more complicated and if not setup right can perform worse, but if right will way out perform. They are also easier on the motor. The other down fall is the oil return if you can't keep it above the pan. Otherwise it's more power with less wear, plus can't beat a muffler that makes mad power. LOL

Only thing not better about turbos over a supercharger are the facts that it is more complicated and if not setup right can perform worse, but if right will way out perform. I totally disagree..

first off people who think turbos give HP using the wasted exhaust are nuts. anything that restricts the exhaust causes back pressure against the pistons on the exhaust stroke. it's one of the reasons why diesels use engine brakes or jake brakes, it is very efficient way to use the exhaust compression on ford trucks they literally block off the exhaust. on semis they close the exhaust valves part way through the exhaust stroke.

 

also turbos by design carry heat from the exhaust side internally to the intake side which requires more intercooling.

 

while a positive displacement or roots style does use crank hp to spin the blower what it makes in power is significant verses the energy to drive it.

 

but if your looking at the best of both worlds a centrifugal SC IMO is the best of both worlds. it has less parasitic drag than a roots, and generates a lot less heat. the downside is like a turbo you got to wait for the rpm's to get full boost.

 

keep in mind that with a turbo the more PSI it makes the more airflow. by the time it gets to the turbo all that air has to get past the turbo and becomes less efficient.

 

as a case in point. as a pilot flying airplanes as a hobby there are many single engine piston aircraft that use turbo's. they all have adjustable waste gates to regulate boost pressure because the only point to a forced induction aircraft engine is to make up for the losses at altitude. so this means at 7,000 feet the engine manifold pressure is the same as it is at seal level.

recently Forced Aeromotive technologies (FAT) located in Denver Colorado started fitting Vortex superchargers (exactly like the ones used in cars) to aircraft in favor to the turbo.

the results were pretty amazing as the SC equipped aircraft can out climb a similarly equipped turbo equipped aircraft of the same type and same displacement by a pretty significant margin. up to a minute faster to 10,000 feet!

the reason is because the SC stays a LOT cooler and more dense air charge verses a turbo without the use of an intercooler.

they also use a lot less fuel verses a turbo.

well folks the day has arrived! i have to get up at 3;30 am tomorrow morning and catch a 6:15 am flight to LAX, ill be at edelbrock at 8:00 hopefully and sometime within the next 12 hours ill have some videos to post.

Well I managed to get one more run and I did a 0 to 60 in 5.51 seconds and the density altitude was 5300 feet. Temperature 107 degrees elev approx 1000 fee. I was just north of Las Vegas

Not too bad for less than ideal conditions.

All I can say is if your in 2wd 1st or 2nd without traction control turned on all I get is tire smoke!

I can tell you that you're only going to love it more as you drive it. I will have a hard time ever driving a NA truck again.

    • Monthly payment is only part of the equation. With today's prices and interest rates, I'd look at the total monthly cost: payment, insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and expected repairs. A vehicle that fits comfortably into your budget is usually the better choice than stretching for a higher trim. I've also kept my vehicles longer over the past few years. New cars have gotten expensive enough that driving one for 10+ years, while staying on top of maintenance, often ends up being the most cost-effective approach.

    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.    
    • apparently CA smog is (or at least was)  checking that the vehicle is using the oem and/or a ca smog approved tune, so I expect you'll fail inspection doing it.
    • yes, leaking exhaust will mess up o2 sensor readings, which in turn messes up fuel trims.
