Towing with my 2014 Sierra

I need some help. Just purchased a 2014 GMC Sierra Crew Cab 2WD SLT 3.42 rear axle ratio. It wasn't my intent to pull a trailer when I made my purchase but now I am wanting to. The manual shows the Max Trailer Weight at 9.800lbs and the GCWR is 15,000lbs. The trailer I plan to pull has a dry weight of 5,100lbs and a gross of 7,200lbs. Do I have enough truck to pull this? I'm new to all this..Sorry.

You will be fine with a weight distributing hitch. Without one you won't be over GCWR but you could possibly be over GVWR depending on how many passengers you have and what else you carry.

A trip to a scale will take a lot of the guess work out of what you can do. That way you can get your truck's weight, axle weights, trailer weight, tongue weight, combined weight and if your going to use it, get your load distribution set correctly. There's simply no way someone on the internet can determine what you can tow within the manufacturer's specs based off of the estimated weight of the trailer, I get that it works most of the time, but there are better ways to do things than guessing.

If some idiot cuts you off on the freeway and slams on his brakes, and you rear end him, having a some documentation from a scale can save you a lot of headache when he tries to sue you for being overloaded or improperly loaded.

If you plan on towing, STAY AWAY from the higher 3.08 gears. People that tow with those gears will claim it works just fine BUT they are NOT the gears you want for towing. It gives you less towing/hauling capacity, and the truck will be a slug.

You be fine. Drive a safe speed and make sure your brakes are good watch your gauges. I pull this with my '14 1500 3.08. Does fine. . 4b65fac381e702251ca22c273613b98c.jpg

How do you like that Jayco TT? The better half and I have decided to jump into RVing and are trying to decide what TT to get. So many manufaturers/models/sizes to choose from!

I like it. I got the JayFlight G2 32Bdhs.

I had a 28' Jayflight G2 for about 4 years and loved it. They are well built and we had no issues with it.
