I work graveyard. In Hilllsborough county thats where all the kids come to race between 10:00 and 1:00 and the interstate is pretty open. I agree that never would have happened during a workweek.

Using the logic of speeding to stay safe is one of those that comes from someone attempting to use humour as an excuse. I seriously doubt you have ever even seen an accident caused by someone doing the speed limit and being over-run by a pack of speeding cars. Even if you were, the impact would be exactly the same as being hit while sitting still by a car racing by at 15mph.

I wasn't being that serious. Now a days, it starts to drizzle and traffic is at a stand still. One better is how someone will miss the entire turn signal at the light because they were too busy on their phones. But, drive up Route 53/355 and see what happens if you want to stay near the Speed Limit... Or take 290 towards Chicago. Speed Limits here are looked at as a suggestion.

We were cruising at that speed. I got up to 135mph and thats as fast as he was going. I believe our chargers govern at 155-165 depending on the year. Our crown vics will govern at 120mph.

 

 

Well, I guess I can sleep soundly knowing my '05 Duramax would destroy the Crown Vics. Too bad they don't use them around here anymore!

 

As for the speed limits in the Chicagoland area, they're a joke. Set your cruise at 75 (in a 55) and you'll be the **** causing a traffic jam. No matter what time of day, or what particular highway, you will never be the fastest moving vehicle. SOMEONE will see you and have to pass you.

Other than HP and SO what agencyreally needs or wants something built for speed? Pursuits are fast becoming like police powers and officer credibility in the eyes of the govt. a thing of the past.

It is not just Chicago area drivers that do that. Happens anywhere there are more than two cars. It is near impossible to be the fastest car on the road for more than the distance between 2 interchanges. The most entertaining part is driving past them stopped on the side of the road by any make of cruiser. Around here, even better seeing the flatbed picking the car up. Usually means 7 day suspension, 7 day storage bill, and then the lawyer and fine that comes months later. I never get tired of seeing that one.

Police cars generally don't have to out run the vehicle being chased, they need only out drive him. I think that most that run are not in full control of their mind. Rarely having any real experience dealing with the weight and g-forces that Grand Theft Auto just cannot simulate while they were doing their training. Much like the people that go online bragging how well they can play a guitar now that they have Guitar Hero. Now that I think of it, when I was a kid, it was paint by numbers that made us quality artists in our own mind.

I know my buddy's dad liked his before he transferred out of k-9 a while back. Granted everyone knows the crown vics are slow as hell but honestly I'd take a crown vic over quite a few of these tiny sardine cans they call full size now a days.

I would think it is like anything else in life, in a one month period you may have 0.2 hours out of about 175 hours of not having the correctly configured or equipped patrol car.

GM sets a max speed (governor) in the ECM. The max speed allowed will be directly related to the tires that the vehicle came with from factory. Some vehicles are set just under 100, some at 106, some at 112, and my 1998 and 2000 GTPs were both limited to 126mph according to heads-up display.

 

It can usually be removed by most tunes. Not really any real need to do that though, a tank of gas at that speed will not likely last much longer than 20 to 25 miles.

What is the RPM at that speed? What gear is it in? Anytime I have hit the speed limiter it is obvious it is a limiter. Both my GTPs would pull strongly to 127, then would feel like it was turning off for less than a second, and the speed dropped to 126. I had my foot to the floor as well. My 2000 had a smaller pulley, Thrasher CAI and SLP LoudMouth cat back and it pulled harder than the 98 stock one did. The way it pulled to 126 and kept going up that one more mile per hour had me hoping for a second or so that maybe it would not be limited. One thing I did notice was that if I had the DIC set to metric, speed limiter hit at 199kmph. This was back when reprogramming the ECM meant mailing your ECM to someone so they could modify it, then mail it back. It meant you could be without the car for 2 or 3 weeks, especially if you were Canadian.
